Update: An animated project is in the works.
In the 2nd part of our two-part review, Stam Fine Reviews various attempts to keep the Babylon train chugging along.
Over five seasons, J. Michael Straczynski's Sci Fi epic told a grand story on a fairly small budget and pioneered the use of computer graphics on a major TV show. Some additional telemovies, shortlived spin-off series and a few attempts to relaunch the series that didn't quite have the same effect. In short, lesser entries in the B5 universe.
Babylon 5 and its spinoffs, stars Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian, Tracy Scoggins, Jerry Doyle, Richard Biggs, Patrica Tallman, Peter Jurasik, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, and Stephen Furst. Crusade added Carrie Dobro, Gary Cole, Daniel Dae Kim, and Peter Woodward to the mix.
Today we'll look at the Babylon 5 TV movies (In the Beginning, Third Space, River of Souls, A Call to Arms), the spin-off series Crusade, and two later attempts to tell B5 stories in new formats (Legend of the Rangers, and The Lost tales).

I am a massive fan of B5, but i am not looking forward to this animated thing. I would like more live action, but then i would want the old cast, and as this program has had such bad luck with cast members still being around, i know thats not going to happen. I would not be apposed to a reboot, if it was done right, but how they will find people to play either G'Kar or Londo as well as the originals, i simply do not know.

Part of the tragedy of B5 is that CG space effects came into their own just after all of the B5 series ended. Lost Tales gives us a hint of what it could have looked like.
The other tragedy is that so much of the main and supporting cast has passed. B5 was contemporary with Star Trek TNG and DS9, which still have most of their crew well enough to appear in projects like Picard. But B5 has lost Michael O'Hare, Andreas Katsulas, Richard Biggs, Mira Furlan, Jerry Doyle, Stephen Furst AND Jeff Conaway. Incredibly sad.

In the most cruel and tragic example of "life mirrors art" that I can imagine, Jerry Doyle - who plays a character always struggling with his alcoholism - himself died due to complications of alcoholism. Going back and watching those B5 seasons where Garibaldi is having to deal with that addiction is heart-wrenching to me now.

CRUSADE never got its chance and I have always been pissed about the way TNT treated JMS.. That show really had potential - and I love that the main virus story would be wrapped up by end of season 2 and then it would've become about earth and leftover shadow technology... I had no issues with the cast - I actually really grew to like the Max Eilerson's character, even with his attitude. I think the doctor was the weakest acting wise - but serviceable at least. Dureena, Galen and especially Gideon were all top notch. And I loved the Apocalypse box idea.

I am glad the Babylon 5 books were mentioned in this video. I have read The Psi Corps Trilogy, The Legions of Fire (Trilogy), and The Passing of the Techno-Mages (Trilogy) and I highly recommend these books to anyone who loves Babylon 5. These books finish some of the story arks very well and they add a lot to the lore. They are amazingly good in my opinion. They really fit seamlessly into the Babylon 5 universe and do explain a lot of things in some very cool and unexpected ways.

I can't be the only one who thinks that JMS wanted Gideon and Galen to become a gay couple eventually. There's about as much homoerotic tension between the two as there was between Kirk and Spock in TOS and JMS did plan to make Talia and Ivanova a gay couple so he wasn't shy about depicting gay couples. Also the way JMS wrote the two just screams "these two are crushing on each other but are too afraid to say it outright".

One positive thing one can say about The Lost Tales is that the space CGI looks amazing. Sadly they use a lot of minimal/virtual sets that look like what they are: A dark room with a spotlight so you can't see the plain walls. And yeah, the writing in TLT isn't that great. The screwy viewing order is a direct result of interference from the TNT board of directors. JMS had originally intended to jump straight into the action with the Excalibur already on mission and during the break in filming had new costumes made, but TNT decided they needed to make a pilot episode of the crew coming together, all with the newer uniforms so the episode order was shuffled to accommodate. At first, JMS tried to work with their "suggestions", but as they got more ridiculous he refused so TNT canceled the show and deliberately tanked the contractually obligated airing to prevent another network from picking it up.

    • @uliwitness
      @uliwitness Před rokem +1

It's more complicated than that: They started filming with the "bellhop" uniforms, then TNT requested cooler black uniforms, and also requested a second, more action-packed first episode (to be done with the new black uniforms). So they wrote the switch from black to grey into one of the new episodes, and there was an episode planned to explain the switch back to black involving a fire in the laundry room (which was a victim of the cancellation). So you can kind of tell which episodes JMS *intended* to be first (the grey ones), and which ones the studio wanted (the early black ones).

Although both of these videos are excellent, I feel like I have to disagree with most of what you said here.
After seeing River of Souls on a VHS tape in 1999, I never watched it again, but the rest of the films in my opinion all range from great to absolutely fantastic.
In the Beginning finally lets us see exactly what happened before and during the Earth-Minbari war.
The story was so beautifully realised from start to finish and incredibly emotional near the end when the human President pleaded for help to allow some to escape
Earth's destruction. I bawl my eyes out everytime I hear her voice breaking.
Thirdspace was an absolute masterpiece showcasing one of JMS' greatest themes - the massive and ancient power of a hidden race which had designs on
subjugating the entire universe. It was done the first time with the Shadows in the main show, then again later in Legend of the Rangers, A Call to Arms and
The Lost Tales part 2. And when you even see a Vorlon ship which had been completely taken over by the alien artifact attacking the B5 crew, you know this
race aren't to be trifled with...!
River of Souls I don't remember the story, but I do remember not wanting to watch it a second time, so I never did.
A Call to Arms rivals Thirdspace for my favourite B5 film and the overall quality seemed to have improved too, from the set designs to the CGI. IMHO the best B5 pilot.
When B5 fans want to crap on Crusade, my response is always "Can you imagine if all we had of Babylon 5 was Midnight on the Firing Line to By Any Means Necessary?"
I can't see there being any B5 fans if that was the case. Crusade wasn't given the time to expand and show us what its lore and characters truly had to offer. And even if not
as great as the legendary themes of Christophe Franke, the music was fine with me, not only demonstrating that Crusade was something new, but that the B5 universe in
    general had evolved & expanded.
I have never understood the hatred thrown at Legend of the Rangers. While maybe not up to the pilot heights of A Call to Arms, it's at least as good or better than the Gathering.
And what is the problem with the VR weapons station...? It was something original and we never got to see how it could have evolved. Again, the all-powerful force, in this case the
Hand were both interesting and terrifying at the same time. On a lighter note, maybe I was young & stupid, but even though the main guy's surname was Martell, I honestly thought
he was Delenn & Sheriden's son for some strange reason. 🤦‍♂
The Lost Tales gets a lot of venom thrown at it and again I don't understand why. Watching this in true HD, (not that half-baked HD that HBO has transformed the original series into)
the characters, sets and CGI all look phenomenal. While they're not the biggest or most important stories ever to be told, they are both interesting and have nice twists to them. Not
every story has to alter the universe to be good. It would have been interesting to see where this series could have gone, but alas it was not meant to be.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey Před 5 dny +1

General opinion (a couple of decades ago - I don't know how much it's changed over time) was that In The Beginning and A Call To Arms were the "good" TNT TV movies, while Thirdspace and River Of Souls were okay as glorified episodes, but not as good.
Comparing Crusade to the first half of B5 S1 is entirely reasonable - and not unfavourable to Crusade overall, though that does rely at least a little on giving the benefit of the doubt for the TNT meddling. One of JMS's examples of studio notes he rejected was the one where the studio wanted the resolution to a situation to be that Gideon ordered Dureena to trick the telepathic villain into using his psychic powers to rape her...
Legend Of The Rangers was a promising pilot - and another victim of 9/11 as the matches leading up to the Super Bowl were postponed by a week, putting a big match on at the same time as LotR - except on the West Coast, where it pulled in viewing figures that, at the time were Sci Fi's second best (behind only the Dune miniseries). Of course, the CEO at the time, Bonnie Hammer, was on the record as thinking that the Sci Fi channel shouldn't be wasting money on space shows...
The weapon control system is obviously not the most efficient possible, but it is very consistent with established Ranger attitudes - like their focus on close-range staff fighting rather than use of firearms. It also means that, at least in principle, any Ranger trained in hand-to-hand combat techniques could be dropped into the gunnery station with no additional training. And, of course, the Minbari (particularly the Warrior caste) are used to being the biggest, scariest things around, so they can afford to sacrifice some combat efficiency for philosophical purposes.
And, yeah, The Lost Tales are a demonstration of just how good JMS is (or was at the time) that he could produce something that good on that low a budget, but I have no objection to JMS having decided that he didn't want to try creating more stories in the setting on a shoestring budget - just because someone can do something doesn't mean it's an enjoyable experience...

If novels or comics are plotted by JMS, that makes them canon. Until he reboots the show.
I'm not a big fan of B5. I finally got around to watching the first series a couple of years ago. I have yet to find the subsequent stuff on streaming. But it is definitely worth at least one watch. I didn't watch it in first run because I watched one episode, and realized I could only take so many bad hair, ridged forehead aliens. And two Trek series pushed me to that limit.

The change in uniform in Crusade was actually a plot point, a clothes designer come on board in the Ep 8 (directed by Stephen "Vir Cotto" Furst) and changed the uniform to that god awful design. That Kick Boxing crap in Legend of the De-ranged is the absolute worst concept ever imagined for a TV show. A Rangers TV show had potential but not with 1 adult(G'Kar) and a handful of adolescents.

Funny to mention Keffer here, given JMS never intended for him to be in the show. He was a studio-insert character (the WB wanted a more traditional Top Gun action hero type character), and as soon as JMS realized that the studio had stopped paying attention, he wrote him out again.

I know of three first drafts that were readable online for a bit (unfortunately no longer available).
      1. To the Ends of the Earth - I believe the signature episode of season one (after which the season would be named, like "Signs and Portents" in B5S1). Would introduce the concept of an Earth Force Shadow vessel.
      2. Value Judgements - The return of Alfred Bester/Walter Koenig (reputed to be next to be filmed when the series was cancelled).
      3. End of the Line - The season finale and more details about the larger story (involving Earth Force use of Shadow tech and the Technomages involvement).
A list of the unfilmed episodes is given in the Wikipedia article on Crusade
      - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Crusade_episodes#Unfilmed_episodes.

A huge budget does not make a good show. That is obvious with such awful modern examples being produced today. However a slavish adherence to a low budget destroys a good or great show. THAT is what happened with B5. Several important cast members were sacrificed to budget. It angers me because B5 was a superb concept and often very well done, despite the poor pay and zero thanks for the effort of the staff.

Rangers have a code of conduct where their weapons are supposed to be personal fighting only (I forget exact verbiage, it's been a few years). I thought the fact that they were "fighting ships" by punching like that I thought was 100% spot on for the concept of the Rangers and what they stood for.
