  • SwitchBot Lock Pro is the newest Smart Lock on the block, boasting a number of improvements over the original SwitchBot lock, however it still has one issue. Let's go over all of the new features compared to the original, look at integrations with Home Assistant and HomeKit, then talk about the SwitchBot Lock Pro's issues with Matter.

    I've had one of these locks for about 3 weeks now. One useful hack for multipoint locks is to add a magnet to one of the multipoint latches and then place a window sensor (may need to remove the housing) in such a way, that when you lift the handle, the reed switch is "on". This allows you to create an automation to lock the door whenever the handle is lifted (I use HA). Works really well.

    Have 3 of the original locks integrated via bluetooth proxies. Have been working extremely reliably (and responsive once I installed a proxy with antenna close by) for more than a year. Only feature missing is the the emergency unlock feature, which is only available via the switchbot app. The main benefit og the lock pro in my opinion is the design and AA batteries. Not enough for me to upgrade, at least not until it gets Home Assistant bluetooth support.

    Great review. I have one big issue with this smart lock, and that is the huge button which you said is neat to have when carrying stuff. This is sold as a Pro lock but does not offer Geofencing to disable the button when not at home, as otherwise when someone approaches the door, excited pets jumping up can open the door by jumping against the button. Also on your door it will be easy to open from outside using a hook shaped rod through the letter box. People will only know this is an option if using the keypad as this identifies its a Switchbot lock from the outside.
    As Geofencing is not offered it would be great to be able to at least disable this button on a routine when at work for example to ensure it does not get opened when no one is at home. Looking forward to seeing the Aqara lock which is due to release soon.

    • @EverythingSmartHome
      @EverythingSmartHome  Před měsícem

      A couple of times it would take multiple presses to work but the worst thing was the very slow response time on occasion. Mostly it was like 3-4s but occasionally you'd get a 10-15s one making you think it hadn't worked and pressing it again causing a double trigger

    In Spain we have tripple bolted security doors with no handle. The door can only be opened with a rather large key which needs 6 full rotations to lock or unlock, plus another quarter turn to actually physically open (click out from) the door frame.
    Another thing is that if the key is left in the keyhole on one side, it blocks another key from being used from the other side.
    Thus not only should the Switchbot rotate the knob/key up to 6 times, but it should also have a straight line movement to pull the key half way out of the keyhole when not in use, and wise versa.
    Does a lock device exist that can do all this?

    I was considering this lock for a secondary door of mine (already have an August 4th gen with the Keypad working with the Yale BLE integration in HA on the front door), but hearing that it requires the hub is a deal-breaker. Besides the magnet not working reliably this lock has a ton of issues not mentioned here!
    1. It only registers opened/closed state ar the outmost point of calibration. Thats utter rubbish if you use the knob or key or have night switch which can be also opened via handle. So basically if i ever use it manually it doesn't notice. This knob is so slow i only use it manually, but then usually i just turn it until its open and use handle for the night switch as its fastest that way. Door doesn't notice. Also as the door never knows its correct state the auto lock/relock isn't working.. so you end up turning manually to close the lock and as it doesn't notice it shows open until it cranks up torque to relock from locked.
    2. As soon as there is the slightest distraction like hub offline the auto lock/relock just doesn't happen.
    3. The software integration with home assistant is a joke if used with night switch at least right now. And as long as 1. Isn't fixed nothing good can come out of it.
    Back in the box and getting a Nuki. This piece of shit simply isn't worth it. The hardware except the magnet thing is really good but the software is utter rubbish and why use a smart lock without geofencing?
    Buy cheap buy twice clearly the case if your door has night switch.

    I'd like to have multi-protocol support, especially in a large device like this, ideally with a dip switch to select BT/WiFi/Zigbee. In a $100+ device the additional cost would be minimal. Imagine local MQTT control (using a security key token) and status alerts. I certainly don't want another hub, or even BT. Come on SwitchBot, give the 250,000+ Home Assistant users what they want!

    They've completely stuffed the design, to be generic. Who wants a big shoebox on the swinging edge of their door? It's bot super-premium.
    For latches like yours it could have easily been a much lower profile. Sprocket on your shaft, worm drive to the side, tiny motor to drive it and another to drive cluch engagement. Hall effect sensor to keep state of the sprocket (which can be directly driven by hand or key). 18650 or 1S LiPo. LEDs for status. Small Esp board to drive. Saw something similar on here a while back.

      In my opinion that would be a downgrade as you'd have to run a cable to the lock itself, and you wouldn't be able to keep using it while recharging (as the whole unit would die), where just now you can keep using the lock on one battery while recharging one in a more convenient location

    • @playeronthebeat
      @playeronthebeat Před měsícem

      @EverythingSmartHome let me introduce you to smart plugs.
      Bought Shelly TRVs specifically for that reason. Got a smart plug and a cable running to it, delivering power whenever it needs it.
      For me, it's not a downgrade but an upgrade. I'd run a cable to the door and have it constantly plugged into a wall. With BT, I can monitor the charge and can keep it at a comfortable 40%-80% once and for all. Cable can be fitted nicely on the door itself with little to no obstructions.
      With a tiny design difference, the engineers could've integrated USB-C charging into the battery pack and the unit as well (plugging the batteries into a male USB-C port hidden inside the unit, for example).
      I just don't like the idea of yet another battery-powered device that needs changing during the most inconvenient times. I'd rather just set it up and forget it with the minor inconvenience of running a cable once instead of having to change batteries or charge them all the time. :/
