It appears that a lot of graphic novels and comics I read involve sports, for some reason 😅 I read the first volume of Check, Please! and you just reminded me that I need to read the second one. There is also Fence (12 volumes + companion novels) and the Avant-Guards.
I have also enjoyed Tillie Walden's graphic novels. They have beautiful illustrations and a very nostalgic vibe.
Other honorable mentions: Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, Heavy Vinyl, Bingo Love, Bloom, Spell on Wheels, the Prince and the Dressmaker 🙂

Thank you for another video of yours. I now you put a lot of effort in each one. Although I’m very much looking forward to your next Heartstopper song analysis, I can’t lie…
I’ll definitely will check out some of the books though ☺️

Oh snap, I'm the friend who recommended Magical Boy! o: On that note, I don't know if you want to include it since it's multiple stories; in relation to The Kao, there's The Out Side collection.

Faroff is wonderful, I don't know where the story will be going in the future but Miss Sofia Mittens must be protected at all costs!

Another go at *Chef’s Kiss* by Jarret Melendez. A great comics about cooking and crushing on the hunky sous-chef. Good story, well-developed characters (including the side ones), great art and a really fine romance. Homophobia is soundly defeated (yay!). A follow-up story where Ben and Liam open their own restaurant would be fantastic. Warmly recommended.

I ABSOLUTELY love Faroff and It's Kind of a Funny Story, they are my absolute favorites. I'm also reading: Magical Mom, just because I'm a huge fan of the magical-girl genre and I'll definitely read Magical Boy (I think I remember reading the first chapters online); From a Knight to a Lady, The First Night With the Duke and Boyfriends (this one is good, 4 different guys in a relationship together. Very funny!!). Webtoon and Tapas has a LOT of good stories and sometimes I get overwhelmed by the feeling of 'wanting to read all of them, but it's impossible to do it" haha The Witch Boy series is also very good and I think I read it thanks to a post in your blog, highly recommend to those that haven't read it yet. Thanks for another great video Thom, see you next time! o//

Thanks for the rec, Jefferson. I’m taking The Witch Boy with me tomorrow in the countryside (no internet, so physical books only).
I’ve found the world of fanfiction recently, currently reading fanfics fro Check, Please by Durgas Dragon. Superbly written and totally in the character of the original - very much like the Alice Oseman Nick and Charlie short comics, but in words only.

I have 3 graphic novels other than Heartstopper: Check please vol 1 (which I love), The Prince and the Dressmaker (which sadly was only a 3/5) and Spinning by Tillie Walden (which I haven’t read yet).
Always happy for recommendations. Graphic novels appeal to me a lot.

Hi Thom, thanks for recommending webtoons, which actually I hadn’t heard about before, cause I‘m old and don’t follow every new trend. I had to set the language of the publications to english to find the suggested graphic novels finally. Unfortunately there is no cross-language setting. I just began reading Faroff. So far I really like it.

Sweet ! I started Faroff today as well (on tapas). Very likeable, definitely very slow burn 🤣. I wonder if the layout is different on Webtoon ?

*Fence* by C.S. Pacat (writing) and Johanna The Mad (art).
It’s similar to *Check, Please* in that the action takes place in a private american college with a sports specialty. Relationships focus on the competitive aspect of fencing. Very humorous, hugely entertaining. Queerness abounds but romance is limited. *Fence* seems to be an ongoing project. I bought vol V in August and it is ‘to be continued’. Highly recommended.

*Stare Down* on Webtoons: very nice story set in a hong Kong high school. Very diverse representation (sexuality, ethnicity). A very slow burn with plenty of scrolling down and screen changes to do (it’s not in print, so we have to take what’s on offer). recommended.

2 more episodes of Faroff have come out since this thread was started. Things start to gel btw the two sentinels, and Fenn is gobsmacked. Hopefully this will turn up as a printed comic one day. I have a feeling it would be a hit !

I’m old - well, older - so really if you’re talking the graphic novel kind of comics, the only one I really know is Heartstopper. I do have a couple of other gay-themed comics from back in the day, like Howard Cruse’s Wendel and the non-fiction “Pedro and Me” about Pedro Zamora by Judd Winick. I do like them both a lot, but neither of them is YA, either.

    Hey, Thom.
I'm not used to reading lgbt+ comics. But, Heartstopper I read because my son has all of them.
The aforementioned novels are really good because Alice Oseman is an excellent writer. But, I'm gonna see if my son has some comics. If he does, I'll read them.

Perusing Tapas I found a comic series that really left me wanting for more. It’s titled Long Exposure, by Mars Heyward. It’s an high school enemy(bully) to lover story, in their senior year (about 18 yrs old). It deals with parent abuse, falling in love with your enemy, stumbling on secret govt facilities, being endowed with super powers (re: the secret govt lab they stumbled upon), chased by govt agents, fighting school mates/authorities’ dumbness, taking care of each other, etc.
The bully was sent to prison for stabbing his abusing dad. After serving his juvenile term he is sent back to school. The bullied (and his sister) lives with his mom, his rigid queerphobic cop stepdad and their foster home brood. He’s an ordinary looking, fatso nerdy kid, the type that would never be thought to be attractive (physically or socially). I won’t go further, as I still have to read beyond chapter 8. The first 5 chapters have been published in a book, but it seems the rest remains to be printed. Anyhow, it’s on Tapas so the whole thing can be had for free. This looks really good. As attractive as Faroff, but much more eventful.

Another great one on webtoon: Idiot dont catch cold. It's a bit short per episode but you really get the slow-burn feeling. Not to mention, it actually feel like two people building connection instead of, you know, a blatant fetishization. R. U. Screwed is okay imo but I still like it.

Thom, did you read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell ? It’s like a prequel to the Carry On books. I see it’s been adapted as mangas in 3 volumes. I wonder if I should go for the written work or the illustrated one. Any thoughts ??

I haven't read that one, actually! That's interesting it'll be a manga - I'll have to check it out. :)
