    David - sometime your "throw away" comments as you are signing off are the most informative. These are things you know so well at some level I think you think everyone knows it. So uncapped queen cells are so very delicate, that trying to remove one to put in another colony will kill it. Good to know. Thank you sir - great video!

    We just made a quick reverse split with the queen because of seeing capped queen cells. This is great info to know before they start building queen cells

    Thanks David. Being a new beekeeper, I found this out the hard way. My hive made it thru winter and was very strong. First inspection in March revealed lots of bees and many frames of capped brood. Subsequent inspections revealed numerous drone cells in a similar pattern to what you showed. Before I could split the colony it swarmed. I was able to capture the swarm and create a split from it. Now, I'm waiting and hoping that the original colony produces a queen from the queen cells I saw in the hive.

    My allergies are bad every day here in Iowa. So we had vacation last week in savanna and Tybee Island Georgia and I never had any allergies at all. Way to go Georgia. P.S. The food was amazing and everyone I met was friendly!

    I love foundationless. I went with 2 medium boxes stacked with 10 medium frames total and let the bees build down past the wood frame. Beautiful extra long comb. If I need to get more comb built, I simply cut the bottom half off and rubber band to another medium.

    Hi David, i did for the first year double brood boxes. Well i did my splits in 1 hive. 6 splits i got. And plenty of bees still in the original hive. In Ireland this season will be nuts with swarm cells. And this Brexit isn't helping. Sourcing equipment is very difficult. We use British Nationals. And the e.u mainland uses Longstroft which is a pain in the head for bee keepers who are expanding..
    Hopefully the weather holds, Did you see Ian in Canada. He had allot of losses from bad weather...poor guy.

    hey David Im new to bee keeping and dealing with first swarms, wanted to confirm that if bees rapidly bump you it is a threat? a few minutes went by and nothing happened but did get 3 of them to beam me with a headbut as they are moving in. thank you so much for the videos.

    Thank you very much. I have heard before that drones are the first sign of swarming, but didnt know about the exact timeline... So it is like dronebrood-swarm cells-swarming, about a week/two weeks apart each?

    Are there any early honeybee behavior differences between them checking out a potential suitable home verses raiding a site for matierial? I have a few bees flying in and out of an old hive box.

    I have 3 hives and i just let them swarm if they want too. Caught 2 swarms and both queens were marked. Is it bad to let them swarm.

    • @julieenslow5915
      @julieenslow5915 Před 2 lety +4

      If you want to stock some honeybees back in the wild - no it's not bad to let them swarm. Here's the problem with that:
      1. You lose production capability when they swarm (if you want honey).
      2. You lose apiary's growth (if you want more colonies.)
      3. Right now, honeybees are dying in the wild - for many reasons - but Varroa mites are near the top of the list. In your yard you can manage that. At this time - many beekeepers see letting them swarm as just killing the bees for no good reason.

      Cut one of the queen wing and let them swarm, the queen will try to fly but she will fall to the ground and the ball of bees will stay in your yard. When you find the ball of bees put them in a new box feed them for 2 weeks. The original hive will have many swarm cells which is the best type of queen cells you can make more splits from those cells.
