I used to think prong collars were cruel. I refused to use one on my GSP. That is, until he became so unruly at about 6 months old. He would bite his leash, lay down and pull ahead when I tried to walk him. After watching a lot of prong collar videos, I decided to buy one. First time I put it on him, he was like butter. I don’t think he liked it as much as I did. Lol. I am 70 years old and was able to control him like a pro. Love, love, love it. I use it just for training, not all the time. Thank you for your video.
I’m 68 and that’s my feeling too! Adopted an adult rescue coonhound this summer and omg, was losing m mind trying to train her, she wouldn’t eat any treats and didn’t do toys. She was very timid and had had so much neglect and didn’t know anything and she would rather have died than sit or heel..lol..I was pulling my hair out! I thought it was nuts putting a prong on a hound but did it anyway and in less than 15 minutes I had the nicest heeling hound ever. 😂😂 she gets so excited when she hears me get it out! I wouldn’t use anything else on my GSD either.

What size prong did you go with?
My Parents babysit my Dutch shepherd/pit mix every now and then. Mom used to say the same thing about my prong collar, "he walks just fine, I don't know why you use that cruel thing". That was until she tried walking him without it one day and he about drug her into the pond lol. He knows when he's got his "good boy collar" on and when he doesn't lol.
@@VenomRoadRacingdepending on the collar you can adjust the chain by removing a link or adding a link to fit nicely! Just got mine today and total different dog in only 5 minutes
Due to social media pressure I have been raising my 4th Lab witj just flat collar and harneseses
I have delicate hands and she is killing me. Just went back to a prong like my last three labs and power steering is back. She looks happy, and can finally feel what I am trying to communicate. No need for large corrections or jerks. I don't have to wear a hand protective glove anymore. I tried the "new" way, but have gone back to what works for me. Thanks for your fine video.

Prong collar is a game changer for us..large GSD has been reactive and unruly, I haven't been able to walk him in public for a yr. He's great at a dog field but is so over stimulated outside he won't even take food..
Prong collar arrived last week and we have walked 2 miles every day in public since.. I've got so much more control he's so much more relaxed. He will now take treats off me, walk to heal, and the lunging and barking at other dogs and people is less and less..

I love to hear it. I'll have delivery today and I really hope prong collar help me with my dog. He's not a big dog(a little smaller than border collie) but he's strong and it's a nightmare to walk him. He's pulling like horse and is charging at every dog. I tried everything and prong collar is my last resort.

A prong collar has been a total game changer with my chihuahua mix. Yes, he’s a small dog, but this dog slips regular collars and choke chains just make him choke himself until he gags and coughs. Consistent training has improved his behavior, but only a little. He has selective hearing, so when he’s done, he’s done, and not even treats will get him to listen anymore. With the prong collar, he self-corrects as we walk and I just need the lightest tug on the leash to direct him or redirect him. No more heavy coughing and his training is progressing rapidly.
Put a harness on it and don't be a b*tch
I just bought my martingale and Hermes sprenger collar’s I can’t wait to get them in the mail and use them. A lot of these commenters are in the same boat I’m in. I have a pittie who absolutely loves being outside and meeting people. By the time I’m back from my walk with him my arm is so sore from him pulling. I can’t wait to use these collars together. I just know that they will be a game changer. Thank you for easy to learn videos. This channel is greatly appreciated by this dog owner.
The best advise I've seen so far. I own 2 german shepherds and you made my life so much better. I bought 2 prong collars and Martin gales, put them on my gorgeousl girls and one proper pull was enough to change their behaviour. Walks are pure pleasure now. Thank you for doing what yoir doing ❤❤

@@AmericanStandardK9 I have a dog who lunges at cats and dogs badly. I bought a slip training lead and it helped some but she got used to that after awhile and went back to lunging as hard as ever. To be honest I have been dealing with this for about 5 months and have considered having her put down. What if I use a prong collar and she still lunges? Will she correct herself and stop lunging after she experiences the "bite" (for a lack of a better word) of the prong collar?
The prong collars work perfect. My 2 German Shepherds stopped pulling.

Awesome advice! I got that martingale prong collar and it was an instant night and day difference! I only had to correct 4 times in a 2 mile walk! It was great. Before my dog was lunging at babies and strollers to go say hi. He was darting at cars. He once got loose from his normal collar and almost got hit by a car. I tried every single bit of advice for positive reinforcement but as soon as the treats were gone, he went back to his habits. I've been struggling for 6 MONTHS to train him and I finally feel like I've got a handle on it. THANK YOU SO MUCH! It was perfectly explained and I learned a lot!
Just took my dog on a walk with a prong collar for the first time. It was night and day, and she didn’t seem to mind the collar that much. It didnt hurt her, and she gave it lots of kisses when I took it off of her. She used to pull so hard that me, a decently healthy 24 year old, would regularly be pulled off of my balance, and my wife can’t even walk her. She’s a 45 lbs goldendoodle, and she was commanding out walks. The prong collar just gave her the correction she needed to understand. Thanks for your videos !

I always look for your vids, imo they’re the best bits of useable info for dog-puppy training available. I have a 3 month old XL American Bully pup who promises to be a powerful and determined beast. I can’t thank you enough for your videos on prong collars. I thought it was cruel until I reached the breaking point with my 6 month old lab. She literally pulled me down on the ice and injured me. In desperation I checked out your videos and decided to try one. Today was our first try and I swear she was a totally different dog! I love it. Tried out the HS 2.25 prong the first time today. Haven’t given her a big correction yet but she is responding really well with it being backed up with some positive reinforcement. I needed something to get her attention being a typical stubborn Amstaff cross.
That is what I use for my pit x as well. Night and day difference.
I also have an Amstaff and today it will be the first time I will be using a prong collar!

prong collars are always gonna be my go to tool. it is so effective and works instantly. the minute i applied pressure to the leash, my dog went from a pulling machine to walking right beside me. she doesnt even need a leash now
i just got the first prong collar some tryed to get her to do some pressure training before taking out for a walk didnt seem to bug her at all and responded really well quickly and then got hyper and wanted to play so ya great tool thanks for getting me to use one man.
It changed the game with my pulling Doberman pup. Gentle pull.
I want to thank you for your very informative videos. With your help, I have taken a dog no one wanted and transformed him into a great companion. I have prong collar I use for his training and it works great. He is a big baby, and if the collar hurt him he would let you know.
He responds very well to very little pressure, never pulls.Doesn’t chase cats or squirrels, heels well. If more people learned how to use these properly, I think there would be a lot less dogs surrendered to the shelter.
Thanks for rescuing your dog. My dogs come running every time they hear the prong collar. Did you get your Husky? Our dog's mom was a full blooded breeding Siberian Husky. The unintended father was the sneaky next door neighbor's Treeing Walker Coonhound. My shepherd about to learn. Had a rot 20 years ago that was hard to walk. Used that prong collar and it was an instant fix. Been trying to get the Shepard under control and I have failed. I’m 260 with running back legs and I’m getting pulled. No more. Thanks for the video. Just wanted to brush up on how it was used.
My pitty is 9 years old and I still have to use a Herm Sprenger! My GSD responds well to a gentle leader and I recently tried a gentle leader on my pitty (because I get a lot of backlash on CZcams for the herm sprenger) and he literally pulled so hard he made his muzzle bleed 🙄 so we’re back to herm sprenger for him
My GSD just pulled the halti backwards then lunge off towards the trigger.. or leap 6ft in the air and do a crocodile roll.. this Prong collar is a winner for me to.

My 6 mo GSP wears both a Martingale and a prong collar. The Martingale is basically just the fancy strong collar to hold her name tag and back up if the HS prong collar detaches, which has happened a few times. The Martingale, by itself, does nothing. She doesn't care if it chokes her, she'll keep pulling, spinning like a 4 legged propeller. The prong collar has made it so I can actually take my 50 lb whirlwind for a walk.

Very good, informational video. Getting people to use them properly is incredibly important, making the handler and the dog more successful. I think sometimes people forget that training is an on going process, your dog looks to you for guidance so be consistent and firm. There is plenty of time for fun and playing too, but a good solid base will make the relationship so much better.

I have a Goldendoodle. Loves people, and pulls like a sled dog when near them. She also loves, jumping on people. The walk is consistent. I trained all my previous dogs, with a metal choke collar. 4 to be exact. So I went to the slip lead, with my Doodle. Garbage with her longer hair. It sometimes wouldn’t release fully. I had a flat collar on her, for Id tags. She walked better but still, pulling, jumping wandering. No control or attention to me at times.
So I bought a 2.25 Herm Springer, $30.
Watched “introducing your dog to the collar”, videos. Adjusted the collar, to a snug fit. Went out for a walk tonight. A long one. Stopped and trained her to sit. Changed directions, many times. Without notifying her. She just turned 6 months old, btw.
I am in “Awe”, what this collar did. My 6 month old dog, in under 5 minutes. Was in a perfect heal, left side slightly behind me. Head up, not in the grass,sniffing poles out changing directions.
She walked beside me, like I was walking an elderly dog. Who has done the walk, a million times.
I’m over 50 now. So I won’t have many more dogs, before I die.
If I could start all over again. All of my dogs, would be trained on this collar. I cannot believe, what I experienced tonight.
Funny thing is, my sister in law almost wept. When she seen, I bought this collar. There was no pain. There was attention to me, that I’ve never had with a 6 month old dog.
I can’t wait to walk her again, on this collar.

I love prong collars. Education of the tool is key- after that, it’s simple and rewarding for both handler and dog.

just got my first prong collar for my husky, even though it was a bit looser than it probably should be the difference between me walking him on a harness and with the prong collar is almost night and day.
Just ordered mine for my Mali mix. I double up with a choke collar and he is doing 85%, I am ready to get to 100%. I have heard about the evils of prong and ecollars but my trainer uses both and with her 20+ yrs of experience I trust her. I need to make sure my 100lv baby is the happiest and healthiest boy.

right now my dog has a flat collar like you said. Can you use the Martingale collar for every day wear with dog license tag, id tags and the like and use the pinch collar when you train or go for a walk?
Just ordered a prong for my staffy who we rescued a year ago and still have reactivity issues and leash walking issues. She’s come a long way but I’m hoping I can watch enough CZcams videos to teach me how to be a good leader for her.
does prong collar need to be under chin like chain choker or slip leash?
Upstate Canine has safety clips now, so you don't have to double hook :3 it clips the prong to even a regular collar, without sacrificing any performance.
Should I use the prong collar on my dog’s regular walks or just when in public when needed?
Are used to think the prong collars were cruel. But then I worked with a professional trainer and learned how to use them and realized that they are not cruel if used correctly. For my dog, it was much better than the. Choke collar. May end up with one correction per walk versus 10 or 20 that she ignored anyway. She didn’t ignore the one.
Too bad we cant use that collar in my country. But i will try anyway when no one is watching. Its a lot of problem dogs in my country and i am asking my self: could it all have been avoided if the collar was not forbidden in use?

what if i use the flat collar but i use a carabiner or something to connect to the lead, therefore the flat collar isn’t getting and pull unless the pinch collar comes off

Why do you need a back up when using a HS prong collar. Are they prone to falling apart. Do they break easy?
You said you always double hook the pinch collar. Do you mean you double hook it with the live and dead ring or do you double hook it with the pinch and flat collar?

Thank you for this. I have a GSD Shar pei mix. Even though she was well socialized with other dogs and still likes other dogs when she is free to run and play, she strangely became leash aggressive once she was 2yrs old. I spent far too long trying to deal with it using treats and praise but she is not treat motivated. Once a dogs comes within 15 feet of us she becomes fixated and cannot be redirected with treats or toys. I recently got a professional trainer and he introduced us to the prong collar (we tried a normal slip lead first but she fought that too much). I was very uncomfortable with it at first because I thought collars like that were inhumane. Now I've learned that it's just a tool aid communication. When I need her attention I can get it without it turning into a chaotic shitshow where I'm yelling "no" over and over again while trying to physically drag her away from whatever she is obsessing over, while she lunges and snaps at her perceived threat. Walks are are so much calmer and I think she is happier and more confident.

Good content pal.. I've been watching your videos for over a month and I finally convinced myself buying a prong collar. I have a gorgeous, 5 months 64 pounds female Cane Corso who started pulling the leash over the threshold I'm comfortable with, but I'm not sure if it's ok to start training this stuff to a 5 months puppy. Do you think I should wait a little longer?

I found you on TikTok weeks ago and just received our prong collar today I ordered. We recently got a 10 month old golden doodle, already about 65 lbs. I bought the 2.25 herm per your recommendation. I’ve seen a lot of people say I needed the 3.2mm bc his weight. Can I ask why you recommend the smaller mm. Love the vids thank you!
The smaller mm has more bite, basically gauge size kinda depends on the dog. I use a 2.25 on a 116lb corso! I’ve seen them on Danes aswell. You’ll be fine with using the 2.25 as long as you back it up properly!

@@luisocelotllopez9806 check out safety clips on Etsy! Or a cheaper version would be clip a locking carabiner through the dead ring on the prong and then through ring on the flat collar and if it does pop off, you’ll still have your dog connected to the leash.

Should I have too really pull on it? It's helps a huge amount, but it seems like I got to pull a good bit more then videos show. But I don't think it would fit any tighter. My dogs red heeler if that matters.
I fully understand why my use of the HS collar failed. I literally slipped it over my pup’s head. No significant pressure even pulling it fully. I have adjusted this and have a new (surprised!) pup. Thank you so much! Saving up to get your e-collar mastery course online. I’ve fostered at least 15 pups of various ages. My current foster, about 18 months, is a border collie mix. High prey drive, which I’m working on stopping because she constantly bugs my 18 year old cat. She is also leash reactive to anything moving. She wants to sniff any person or dog. So she shows poorly to potential adopters. She would be an awesome dog for a family. But it never gets far enough for a family to appreciate her. And she knocks down smaller kids, and some adults (that would be me). I am in my 60’s and can’t have a dog pulling me down. Too many risks.
I have a 6 year old golden retriever that I believe I’m going to get a prong collar for. I tried the slip lead and she’s just not honing in on it like I think she should age like 2 months. Any thoughts? A lot of people say it’s abusing but I think that bullcrap personally.

From what I've heard it's easier to start any big training at 2-3 months.
I think that is because of the hormonal faze makes the dog feel like he's got something to prove lol.
I have also seen many trainers with prong and e collar start as late as 6 months because at that point the dog better understands pressure better from other dogs.
Just focus on more positive only approach until about a month and slowly introduce more corrections.
At that point you can have the prong on but not in use so the dog gets used to just having it on, same with e collar.
Then once the dog is ready you can start the prong first then the e collar.
where can I buy the leather collar with the chain too on it?? Also, my prong collar keeps turning so the pull part doesn't stay in position. If I take out another prong I think it will be too tight...
Can i use this to help with jumping? If so, whats the best way. My 7 month old pyredoodle jumps all over my kids and nips and play bites but it hurts them

Would just love a longer discussion with you, you have lots of short videos which are obviously excellent. However, I do not feel like we get enough of being educated and getting insight from you! you want it high on the neck a bit below the ears, you should be able to move it around the neck (as in being able to move it in a "circular" way) hope this helped!

I use a prong collar on my GS, but I am still having some problems with her not listening to me. She still pulls on me alot.
Definitely need prong collars, I own 2 cane corsos they weigh 130 lbs each I weigh 120 couldn’t of walked them without proper training with the prong collar. Thank you for the great info I love you channel!! Much love from SoCal

I'm so confused about which Collar to use and when etc. I want my Cane Corso to run around the yard free but I was thinking of adding the e collar just in case he decides to go for a stroll in the woods. Bought the 2.25 mm collar for my dog’s 19 inch neck, the collar was too short and would not go around his neck. Should I have purchased more links instead of going to the next available size (3.2 mm) on Amazon? Dog is a 4-year old boxer (had to remove a couple of links since the larger collar was meant for a 23 inch neck), thank you in advance.

Get a leather martingale. I got one that was too loose, and I made a hole to fit my dog perfectly. And to answer your question, they come in different sizes.

Great video! I just have one question, when do we stop using prong collars? Will the dog return to its old ways if it knows that it's no longer wearing a prong collar? How do we transition from using to not using it?
Slowly transition to a normal collar
dogs can become what you call "collar smart", when they know you put the prong or e-collar on. Dont use your training collar only when you are training. Leave it on, until he or she is following command 100% or you are fairly confident they will follow through their commands. Then you can change to normal martingale, for basic feedbacks.
I use a choke chain as a safety against prong collar failure. The choke chain is longer and doesn't engage unless the prong collar fails.
Martingale collars are used on sight hounds. They have heads as thick as their neck and normal flat collars slip off.
Question: Do you keep the prong collar on all the time, or just for walks? Right now I have a martingale collar on my 6 month French Brittany spaniel. He pulled me down a grassy knoll and I twisted my back out. I'm thinking of getting a prong collar on account of how effective they seem.
No definitely do not keep the prong collar on all the time.. only for walks or you're needing them with you for safety reasons etc
