How to make a cane or bamboo fishing pole. Making a cane fishing pole is easy, fun to use, and you can DIY! WORM GITTER SOLD HERE: www.dukessportpro.com/
Funny, I just got my bamboo pole this afternoon. I’m making my wife a fish’n pole. I didn’t think about making a slip in the top. As a kid we just tied it off on the tip. Thanks for the tip.
Aloha from Hawaii! We are going to make these with my 5 year old daughter and her friend. This is the perfect simple pole we were hoping to start them with. Thank you!
Duke, thanks for introducing us to the wonderful sport of cane poling! I enjoyed this from start to finish! I don't believe I can find any type of tree or branch up here that grow as straight as yours. But now I'm going to be looking now! This was immensely informative and entertaining! Thanks much my friend!
Just recently subbed to your channel. This video brings back memories of sitting on the bank of a creek or lake when I was a kid over 50 years ago. We used 12' and 14' cane poles to go after bluegill, catfish and crappie. Thanks for that memory.
Hi Jeannie! Welcome to the WG channel! I know what your talking about and that is what we love to catch too! Love to bring up good memories, and thank you for commenting!
I'd like to say thank you for this video, and the rest of them as well, I've been using a cane pole made with your slip joint method for almost 2 years now. And it works pure T awesome.. keep up the great work!!
WORM GITTER I may not be able to make one, but I sure can buy one. I'm right off the Chesapeake Bay, and there is no loss of any kind of fishing equipment here at all. Wait till my brother sees me with a Bamboo fishing line!!! what a sight that will be for him. He has every piece of fishing equipment known to man. !! I will be fishing off my pier though, my son sold his boat, but it is a great place to fish. Bless, Sheila
I bought a cane pole a few months ago and i enjoyed it a lot (it was great when I was having no luck fly fishing), but it just finally broke. But instead of buying one (unless it’s a Japanese tenkara pole) I think I will pretty much just make my own now! There is a ton of Giant Reed plants along the arroyos by where I live and they are probably good for a fishing pole! (Also they an invasive plant species here in New Mexico so it’s pretty good to chop them down) I love Cane Pole fishing, it’s simple and is about actually fishing rather than gear!
Im going swimming with my friend tomorrow in the Rapidan River and I wanted to go fishing but my dad won't let me take my fishing g pole but thank you for this DIY I hope it works well!!!
This is terrific!! I had just seen a cane pole on Bushcraft Stephi's little fishing video, and hers looked a little bulky and stiff. That one looks more manageable. I just started fishing again after a ten year hiatus. I tried a foam bobber, and gotta tell you, they're tops. I fish with kids, so those things are awesome, they don't crack. Tight lines :)
Hey WORM GITTER, at's how I learnt to do it here in East Tennessee to. I never did find a real straight cane pole neither. I'd fine a tree with a limb pretty high and throw a cord over it, tie the end to the big end of the pole, hoist it up clear of the ground, and tie a brick to the little end. I'd leave it hanging till the cane turned tan. Trim the tip behind the knot holdin the brick and it'd be pretty straight, and tough too.
Thats so cool, I wonder how many people thought like me, that, you just take any ol stick n tie a string on the end and there you go. Thanks for the info!
I found that you can use a weed burner torch to straighten the bamboo. Just get a section hot enough for it to get shiny and straighten with paper towels to protect hands. If you go past shiny green all of a sudden the chlorophyll changes color. It is a rather dramatic change to brown leaving it sticky. Just clean with paper towel soaked with rubbing alcohol. This works with arrow and Moso bamboo.
Most likely you have one of those two species I mentioned as they are the most common ones found here in the US.. Moso looks very much like the type in this video. Arrow has long slender leaves with leaf sheathes wrapped around the stalk. Moso has no sheathes and no limbs near the ground. The limb nodes will be 180 degrees from each other as you go up the stalk. I only started playing with bamboo about a year ago. My neighbor has a stand of arrow. The Moso stand is approx 2 acres. As I find new methods will stop by here and share with y'all.
yes Sir, i have a playlist "Free Worm Farm." Basically its a pile of leaves and grass clippings that is in the shade. Keep it moist and after the pile goes through the heat from decomposition the worms will come to it naturally. I do gather worms up and take it to the pile also. They will eat up the composted leaves and leave their castings. You have to keep it damp and in the shade cause if it gets dry and hot they will leave...another good thing they leave their eggs too
They can be a problem for sure...I have two beds and I will use one for the leftovers from butchering rabbits, cleaning fish, etc....it will always attract ants. The other is for leaf and grass compost only and when ants get in there I use a post hole digger and stir em up....keep em stirred up.... catch em early and the only thing ye can do is control em....Thanks!
Momma was from Pensacola - miss being able to walk to the side yard and cut a pole. I,d be fishing the lake in a half hour! Pennsylvania just changed there fish law, I can run three poles now instead of two. I would like my third pole to be cane. Have you ever made one two piece? Scribed and need a good pole.
Hey Jon! Never made a 2 piece. If you know how I would like to know! I am trying to think how you would go about it. Thanks for subbin and hope you like it here!
Hey Duke, how was the fishin' the day the pole was born? I have been think'in about the two piece just to get it to Pa. Everything I have come up with just weakens the pole to much. Be just as tough to con a trucker or boater commin' this away to haul one whole! Anyway, I like the split tip in your pole and tying the line back a spell. Good thinkin'. Did you come up with some other vids? Now I'm hungry maybe a fire - iron skillet fish fry vidieo? MMM hush puppies and mullet! Good fishin' WORM GITTER
I made a video using the pole czcams.com/video/bA9q0vh9f4Q/video.html You got me thinking and I think I can come up with something! Here is a link for the two piecesensiblesurvival.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-primitive-two-piece-cane-fishing.html I will try it and see how well it works!
Travis Brown makes a cool 2 piece, the only video I have seen on YT. Here is the link: czcams.com/video/7pOqtYoD0u4/video.html I am making a video of them fitting together. The two piece is a great idea especially for hikers. Thanks Jon for the great idea and look for the video soon!
