Rock candy is a childhood favor!!! Haha I love how you added the disclaimer at the end, as a kid I always wanted to make them 😆 Great video!
@@inthekitchenwithmatt if it sticks to the bottom you can set the container in hot water until you can get it unstuck
Amazing!! I was originally looking for geode macaron recipes, but everyone seems to order their sugar crystals online and I really want to make my own. Thank you for this!!
Growing up I had an Aunt and Cousin that use to make these a good bit. Was sort of "Their Project" to do together especially around the holidays. I was so envious of them but fortunately they usually made enough to share when I would visit. Haven't thought about making these in years. Might be a good project for the grandkids one day.
That is awesome J. Yes might just be a good project to do with the grandkids! :)
Great job! Love the information!
I am trying to do a side job of making candy! Not sure of what kind of candy yet!? I will try different kinds! Thanks for the advice!!!!🍭🍬🍫🍡
Thank you so much Sharon!! Go for it! A side job making candy would be awesome! :) :)
im so glad i found this! i had a recipe but i had now idea what things should look like this will help tons! i never realized how much work went into these lil suckers
Glad you found it too! :) Yeah, they take a bit of work and time, haha.
I've never had rock candy in my entire life so far, so I'm super exited to try this
Hey mat I wanted to make this for so long and they turned out great your videos are so well explain so I just described to you, nice video!
Instructions unclear: accidentally cooked crystal meth and I'm now on the run from the DEA
I subbed so fast when I heard “oh yeee look at that yeee yah! “
Thank you! I’m going to be doing this for myself probably at midnight or whenever I’m home alone lol
yes this definitely reminds me of being a kid. esp on school field trips, we end up at that gift shop and rock candy was always the most affordable.
Omg yeah!! My first time was at the zoo in kindergarten and we got rock candy from the little store.
Thanks for sharing this recipe! I’m trying to learn some new candies to make for Easter this year. I may have to try this. Thank you for teaching me something new! I make cooking videos too! It’s a pleasure to learn from other talented creators like you! I hope we can learn more from each other!
Matt - Matt - Matt You are hitting my sweet tooth right and left - waiting for the next candy to explode in the mouth. Thanks for the recipe !
Hey how do you make a large qty? Can we reuse the mixture for another rock candy?
@@inthekitchenwithmatt hello matt I was using your way but is their any way it can work faster
@@laithmoustafa6938 Hello, no, not really, every way is pretty much like this. You can't rush it.
The longer you cook the liquid the faster they work I boil mine for 15 mins , takes 1-2 days! The more water evaporates, faster working time! I hope I explained that right! Enjoy!!
hi matt thank you so much for this video! i was wondering, can you put more than one skewer in the sugar solution? or will affect the growth of the candy?
hi there! You are very welcome. It depends on how large of a container you use. If you use like a large pot you can space them out, but in the jars or glasses like I showed in the video, then no, that is too close together. :) Good luck, let me know how it turns out.
A restaurant that we would go to growing up would use rock candy as stirrers in their cocktails including their old fashioned cocktails. I am one of 3 kids to our ‘rents. Dad drinks old fashioned cocktails. He would drink 3 of them and give us the kids the rock candy stirrers. Mom would drive us home.
Thank you so much! I've tried watching many videos for good instructions on how to make this candy, but none had the measurements or were helpful. Great for my science project I'm cramming that's due in a week... Also amazing how you reply back to everyone in the comments. I was trying to do that in all the other videos I watched to try and help lol.
You are very welcome!! Have fun making it! If you are doing it for a Science experiment, I recommend doing a few variations. You could also put some in complete dark, like in a pantry, and then others put on the window sil in the direct light. And maybe another jar with candy in it in at normal house light. So you can see how light plays a role if any. Maybe try one with a stick and another with a string and see how the crystals grow. Lots of fun things you can do in the name of science with this.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Oh wow you've got all the ideas! I wouldn't have though of all that. I need to buy some more sugar and go ahead and do that. Thank you so much for the help!
@@ardengrey7 You are welcome! Have fun, and let me know how it goes.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt hey sorry I forgot to tell you how it went, but it went really well! I got a 91 just because I didn't have variables listed
Thanks, now I will get an A+ on science, it was an assignment

Thanks for this i was craving rock candy for Weeks and I couldn’t find it anywhere
I didn’t get the way others make it until i saw your vid thanks ill try this
Hey,Matt,I was just wondering can you put it in the fridge to fast the proces?
Hi Li, no, don't put it in the fridge, it needs to be at room temperature. :)
@@SSCShortChannel the top of the jar/container you mean? yes you can put a covering over it, to prevent bugs and such from possibly getting in there.
Very neat thank you!!! I laughed hysterically when you said 5-7 "DAYS". Lol, I just knew you were going to say minutes or hours even. 🤣 I will still make. But so glad I watched in its entirety first.
Thank you! Yeah unfortunately you can't rush the science of this. It just takes a long time for the crystals to grow properly. :) Glad you watched the whole thing!
Thank you so much, this turned out amazing! And I'm normally horrible at making candy/cakes 😂
You are very welcome! So glad your experiment worked! These types of food science projects/recipes don't always turn out correctly the first time, but happy you were successful.
Thankyou Matt it's so beutifull..and I'll show to my grandchild....
is it funny that I'm watching this for school during the pandemic.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Yeah it was supposed to be a experiment, but my mom said no because she didnt want to waste sugar -_- and then get sick for eating too much sugar :{
Thank you! Im making this as a favor and decoration for my daughters 12th birthday...Godzilla themed
For the ones that stick to the jar and cannot come out... take them and put them into a hot water bath (hot tap water) with the water coming up to about an inch from the top and in about 5 minutes they will slide right out. Yes you will have a huge jar shaped candy but you can chip it down to a smaller size.
the intro scared the hell out of me knife drops down then random bald guy come out of no where lol!
Thanks Matt i will make this with my grandkids, i started with gummy bears and different molds this is awesome thanks and im a subscriber for sure
3:22 "And now boys and girls, we cook til it turn rock"
Jesse, we need to cook! haha. Breaking Bad is one of my all time favorite TV shows. I even dressed up as Walter White one year for Halloween.
Matt I let the liquid cool for too long and when I put the sticks in it was like slimy and a bit solid if that makes sense. do u think it could still work
Can you change the jars they are in after 3 days or so and get multiple colors on them, or does the disturbance cause a problem?
mmm good question, I have never tried that, so I can't say. I am guessing the disturbance might cause a problem as you suggested. But a fun experiment to try for sure!
Can I pour all the solution in a low pan with edges let it crystallize then break apart to make a bunch at one time ? Will it work ?
Hi Dave, no, I don't think that will work, they need something like a stick or string to grow on. But you can always try it. You will probably get crystals to grow in the low pan, I just don't think they will break apart that great. But hey, it would be a fun experiment. :) And pretty cheap to try.
You are so awesome. Thanks you for sharing this video. Ready made is so expensive and I make a lot of teats your video has saved me a lot of money.
2 questions..... Can I add white food coloring to make my colors pop more and can white only be used?
Thank you so much, Shalonte! I have never tried white food coloring, only the classic colors. I imagine that color would be fine.
Can you keep reusing the mixtures, or is each mixture only good for 1 stick?
You can, but you need to add about a cup more sugar to it and reheat it. Since sugar is used to created the stick. Luckily sugar is cheap! haha
I Hope you Will answer Bcs Its old video but after ill do the Crystal can i use the liqid one more time?
Hello, you can use the liquid again, but you will need to heat it up again, and add one more cup of sugar, to make up for the sugar that was used to created the rock candy.
THANKYOU I have been meaning to try this perfect recipe
I also have a question when I tried it seems all the crystals are at the bottom of the jar instead of the stick anyway to prevent that is it because the stick was to close to the Bottom of the jar?
@@Emily_urgle hi there Leah, yeah that can happen a lot. Yes, make sure they stick isn't too close to the bottom. Also, make sure you heat the jar up first with hot water before adding the mixture to it. Rock candy while easy to make can be a bit finicky. But you were successful in getting sugar crystals to grow, which means part of the experiment worked! :)
Funny anecdote I feel you may enjoy: found this video because my husband didn't think rock candy grows so I had to prove it. He's mind blown currently XD.
Thank you for making this video. He's said multiple times that we're absolutely making rock candy now and I'll take any excuse for rock candy XD.
hahaha, that is awesome! Have fun and let me know how it turns out.
Thank you so much! I am doing this while sick at home.
@@mockeyfan4244 You can! But you need to add one more cup of sugar to it when you reheat it, to make up for the sugar that was used to make the crystals, otherwise, it won't be diluted enough. You can also use the liquid in other things like as a base for drinks, it is essentially a simple syrup.
I wanna try this. But do the flavors really come through? I have only had regular flavor as long as I know. . could I put in peppermint discs or anything like that?
Hi there, yes the flavors come through, but you have to use the right kind. They have to be extracts, etc. So you could use mint extract, lemon, orange, etc. Not peppermint discs, though.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt thank you. I will. Look for extracts even though the truth I think what we had as kids were just what you showed us. Pretty sugar!!!❤❤💙💙❤❤💙💙❤❤💙💙
@@MsBebegurl0212 You are welcome!! :) I think I have a list of flavored extracts in the description box of this video. So many different flavors to choose from. :)
Looks good. ? What can you do with the solution that is still in the cup once you take the stick out ?
Thanks! You can reuse it to make more, just heat it up and an another cup of sugar to replace the sugar that grew on the stick.
Hi. I remember Rock Candy from my childhood-in about 1955. Since then I did not see it around. Now I am over 70 y.o. and by a chance I was shopping in Chinese grocery and they had Rock Candy. I bought it and found, that the sugar is a lot less sweet then if you just take in the crystal form from grocery. And I am wondering if the change it the sweetness is caused by it's crystaline form or if the Chinese add something to the sugar to make it crystalize better or faster and as a secondary effect the sugar is less sweet.
Hello!! No that is correct, rock candy has a milder sweetness than the table sugar it is made from. Because it is made from water diluted sugar. :)
Hey Matt, thanks for the video! I was just wondering what you are using for flavoring?
Thanks!! Any hard candy flavoring will work. They can be found on Amazon, cake decorating stores will probably have them, Walmart may have them. Here is an example on Amazon amzn.to/3IKpsG6
hi matt! ik u made this 4 years ago but i’m in my rock candy phase and reallllly want to try this! thanks
You are very welcome! Good luck and let me know how it turns out!
Hello Matt, thanks for sharing. I do have a question, can I insert more than one stick in same jar at the same time?
Secondly, can I reuse the colored sugar mix after 7 days of forming the first rock candy?
Hi there, no you can't, they will grow together and stick, unless the jar is really wide and the sticks are at least 2 inches apart. You can reused the sugar liquid, however you will need to heat it in again and add an additional cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew, because what is leftover isn't very concentrated. If that makes sense?
Can you reuse the jar if it has leftover liquid until it runs out? Or only to a certain extent
You would need to reheat the leftover liquid and add about another cup of sugar to make up for the sugar loss, otherwise it won't be concentrated enough.
How did the plastic cups handle the heat from the sugar syrup? Want to do rock candy for a lab for my 6th grade science class.
It works quite well, as long as the syrup isn't too hot, so just let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes before pouring it into the cups. Fun idea for science class! I recommend giving it a try on your own first, it can be a little finicky. I will always remember my high school Chemistry class where we made ice cream with. Food science is so fun!
Can you use any kind of sugar or does it have to be sugar crytal from the start?
Hi Lisa, I have only tried it with white granulated sugar, so I can't say how it will work with others.
Yo mate,I was planning to made this but I have a question tho, after we put them in the cups or jars do we put them into a fridge? Or out of the fridge?
Hey Matt! Thanks, I needed this for my Science Project. (In Which Environment Does Rock Candy Grow Best?)
You are welcome!! I am not sure, but I assume a dryer environment works better than one with lots of humidity, but I don't know for sure. It grows great here in Phoenix, AZ which is hot and dry climate.
Hey Matt, how difficult are the jars to clean after your candy has formed?
Not too bad, just get your tap water really hot and allow it to run into the jars, it will melt the candy. :)
Matt's reply just gave me a brilliant idea on how to melt nerds candy to infuse it into jello! Thanks so much. I'm now thinking that nerds could be used as the sugar in this project too!
How do you suggest making it in large quantities? Can you triple etc the recipe and it turn out the same?
Sure it all depends on how many containers you have and how large you want to make them. You can triple the recipe and then use smaller plastic cups and make several of them. I showed the plastic cup version in the video. The really large ones need a larger container.
hi Matt it would drive me crazy to make one of these cuz im not a patient parson
lol :)
Lol XD!!!
The Twin Manokits haha 😆
This is me I am not patient 😆
It grows kinda fast on the 2nd day mine was looking pretty big
