I agree but water breathing is the most basic so slayers can learn that then adapt to what's best for them although I'd imagine having thunderbreathers on the battlefield would be demoralizing imagine having a thunder breather do a thunderclap and flash and they get their head snatched off in the middle of it

Almost every hashira had a special breathing style they developed themselves, thats why like no one else uses them
The original styles were made by Yoriichi and past hashira.

So the original 5 were derived from sun breathing

The reason most use water bearing is because (as urokodaki says) it's the easiest to learn and the easiest to change to a different breathing style once you find one better fit for you

Something we tend to forget is that it isn’t whater breathing that’s bad, it’s the demon slayers themselves. Also, different breathing styles aren’t necessarily better or worse than each other, instead, they’re all just different styles of sword fighting, with different specialties. Water, fire, stone, wind, and thunder, aren’t necessarily stronger or weaker than each other, but instead, it’s how skilled at the breathing style that determines your power. Sure, we see how much weaker, Tanjiro with water breathing is than he is with sun breathing, and also how weak Murata is, but it’s not the water breathing that’s the problem. Sun breathing is like being the chosen one. It’s considered the perfect breathing style. And for Murata, he’s weak because he’s unskilled. Even though we don’t see them, there are other weak people who are like Murata who use fire breathing, stone breathing, wind breathing, and thunder breathing, we just don’t see them. This is a problem with the slayers, one that was actively brought up in the show, saying that the slayers skills are the problem, not the styles they use. (Also, something like sound breathing isn’t just something you can learn, it’s specifically made for Tengen, by Tengen, to make use of his super enhanced hearing, and speed. Mist, insect, flower, love, and snake breathing are all technically the weakest breathing styles, since they’re the furthest from sun breathing, and are only effective because they’re made with the single user’s special talents in mind, and can’t be used by just anyone.)

Tengen sound breathing is specific to him due to his ninja background and his explosive weapons and bombs, stone breathing can only be done by the stone hashira cause nobody has his body which is physically stronger than any other human, even insect breathing is specific to the insect hashira due to her sword and inability to cut a demons head off. Like eveyone is saying, compatibility is key.

Compatibility is the main, also since its primary specialty is defense, making slayers able to survive longer
The color of the Nichirin Sword also reflects the style that is best suited for them. Most of the entrants merely perform whatever style they had learned before entering the corps properly, as taught to them by whoever they learned from. When they receive their Nichirin they see it's color, and that color helps them from that point to learn where to go from there. Particularly skilled entrants may be selected for further tutelage by Hashira or passed straight into undertaking missions.
The members of the last batch we had seen, with Tanjiro were particularly skilled. Their predecessors having undergone less strict training, less shenanigans, are dying left and right. Also to note: they're all rather exceptional talents to begin with with great masters (aside from the two oddballs, Inosuke and the edgy mohawk).
Anyway yeah, not everyone can hack it in those particular styles. Even then it's not like they're all going to reach the heights that the Hashira did.

You forgot just how hard flame breathing is. Not only does it require an IMMENSE amount of strength, but the training required aswell was so intense mitsuri couldn’t handle it. Water breathing however is simply about flow and precise strikes that anyone with some practice can do. It’s less abt raw firepower and more about movement which is easier to teach
Fun Fact: Mitsuri having basically a fricking heavenly restricted body couldnt even learn flame breathing BECAUSE IT WAS TO HARD AND TIRING.

The thing about flame is that there were people who tried to learn it but left because the training was to hard i believe mitsuri was the only one is even got close and even then had to make her own breathing style thats why rengoku never had a successor because they all gave up i believe some ever got close to dieing but i think if it was anyone from the kamaboko squad they would have done it (except genya and maybe zenitsu) because they never give up
Water breathing is just the easiest form of breathing, so it can be quickly taught to less experienced demonslayers
The reason for the breath styles is cause it suits their bodies and personality cause if you remember trying different breath style can have defects on your body.
I'm pretty sure the "flowing" nature of what allows for water breathing to be picked up by just about every joe shomoe with a nichirin blade so that's why it's so common

What you should be really asking is why the trainers don't teach about Total Concentration: Constant. Even if not all of them were hashira, some were (Urokodaki and Jigoro for starters).
We also know that all of the hashira use Total Concentration: Constant. Therefore, there's no way that they wouldn't have known about that beforehand.
And think about it. Wouldn't it be better if all the corps members were suddenly becoming way stronger because they had better and longer training? Sure, they might run low on members for a period of time, but then they would kick ass much better in the long run and be strong enough to hold their own against the lower moons.

1.) most of the users of unique breath styles personally created them because of a specific trait, they have that maximizes their power. Meaning that no one else can use them without that trait.
2.) it depends on the slayers personal skill not everyone can master the other main for breathing styles. Also, water is the easiest to learn.
Every breathing style was created to accommodate to the strengths and weaknesses of the user, because at the time they where created no one was talented enough to learn sun breathing. water breathing is supposed to be the most common, but more for the case that other users derive their own styles from there, and by no means is it weak, in the end its always going to depend on the user.
Rengoku is just built different, left by his father so he trained his tecniques with what he rembered and was left from the books, became a teacher before becoming and hashira and his student became an hashira after him, and that is mitsuri, and the mf was able to almost defeat an upper moon, he didnt knew nothing about him, he was tired from 2 previous fight, had no special training, no power ups but he did it(only thing was the fact the writer obviously made him die just for being way too strong so he said "screw youre morality" just like oda did with ace, fire guys have too much potential)
in my eyes the water breathing is the closest breathing style to the sun breathing, as the sun breathing needs the complete flow of all the movements and turning them into one movement to complete the entire technique. the water breathing has replicated this flow from the sun breathing which is more important (atleast to me) when it comes to performing breathing techniques and its attacks

Thinking back to how Yoriichi never found a user for sun breathing and had to make breathing styles to suit the person’s body and abilities. unless it was a cultivated family heirloom dance that overtime adjusted the Kamado bodies to attune easier with it I guess… maybe not even all slayers are fit for a breathing technique? It makes sense how most of the hashira in that timespan had so many breathing styles accustomed to them. Fire breathing is basically a rengoku family art and maybe the reason Kyojuro had been so proficient was well… it’s a family thing. Water breathing is obv the best option. Since there’s no indication it’s passed down through certain families and we even see how Tanjiro although technically incompatible with it, was able to perform dozens of feats just with hard work. Even though he is talented sure. So maybe even out of all the slayers there are. Most of them literally just aren’t fit enough to be a Tsuguko to a breathing style. Which is where the real innovators come out and start to experiment and find one that suits themselves… that’s just my thoughts tho

People who try and master other breathing styles would likely find themselves much weaker besides the coincidence that the breathing matches exactly with their own strengths.
Water breathing is also has the ability to be one of the most powerful breathings if you choose to stick with it like Giyu did.
Well rengoku also had sacred text from his family keeping them to themselves he also was the only modern hashria with a esoteric art (esoteric means not known by many or kept in a small group)

It’s like trying to teach Tondreau water breathing, or any other form sure he can do it, but he can’t bring out the fall strength the style if you wanna be your strongest pick the style for you
Rengoku is actually willing to take in disciples but ain’t no one want to train under him (other than tanjiro and co.) cause his training is pretty tough. I’ve also noticed that most of the npc demon slayers dont really want to train hard

Flame breathing is something passed down the rengoku family because it requires a child blessed by flame which the rengoku family always does this when a new child is being born also the training is so unimaginably harsh that when rengoku did true to teach it to someone that they all quit the corps all together and the only one that stayed was mitsuri and she wasn’t able to master it and made her own style

For example, love breathing can ONLY be used by mitsuri because it requires supernatural levels of strength and flexibility. Most of it depends on affinity, most of them simply have poor affinity with the style they learnt, only to develop a new style they can master, like kanroji and shinobu. Some of them have high affinity with the basic styles and simply managed to go really far with it, like rengoku, sanemi and giyuu. Even for gyomei, it was a very heavily modified version of stone breathing that honestly, only he was able to use, the original stone breathing was used with a sickle and weight, not a metal spiked ball and axe, gyomei was literally built different. Furthermore, it was also stated that literally only kanroji stuck through with the training that rengoku went through, and unsurprisingly, shes a hashira.
And that’s why Gyomei is the goat. Man is built different? No, he’s built *better*

The breatbing styles are such that they fit the body types of the slayers using them , if everyone could learn everything then every slayer in the first generation would have practiced sun breathing , the reason they all couldnt was because their physique could not keep up , so they all learnt derivates of the sun breathing , they all learnt different derivates implying that different breathing fits different physiques and more constraints are added. Water seems to be the most broad breathing style which can fit in a lot of people so most slayers use water.
Insect breathing- You need chemistry
Dude rengoku was one of the most talented guy in his whole lineage. (He trained hard but still becoming a hashira on your own with limited knowledge and all is insane)
Well the reason for water is explained pretty well it’s because it can be used to fight almost any demon despite demon arts although flame is really good it’s also really ridged and structured which means it would likely take more time to one get used to the moves and two think of how to use them in a fight under evolving circumstances wind has a different list of reasons why it’s not a good match mostly it having no defensive moves and being purely offensive hence why the current one has so many scars as for thunder breathing well let’s just say Kaigaku isn’t the only one who can’t use the first form in fact some hashira couldn’t use the first form and who the hell wants to use a breathing form they know they probably won’t be able to use the first damn attack

Flame breathing requires iron and determination that probably only 1/100 maybe 1/50 people would actually be able to use it properly. Water is fluid in nature, all it would require is willingness to learn and a calm mind (of course in addition to the physical training, but generally speaking)

Two reasons why they didn’t teach flame is that
1. Unless rengoku’s father had a change of heart there doesn’t seem to be anyone left to teach it
2. Mitsuri, another hashira found it easier to make her own breathing than learn flame breathing due to the difficulty of learning it.
Mind you making your own form itself is already a hashira level feat, not to mention a whole new breathing.

Some require something that just doesn’t occur naturally or is developed by that specific user. Like snake breathing, sound breathing, insect breathing are all their own made version of other sword breathing styles to suit their specific way of combat. Some like lighting require good genetics like in the legs to be taught the first form. While water breathing is the easiest to teach, and master by far, and usually people can develop from there

Also, not everyone can do what the main character can do because the style someone is most naturally talented and is usually the style they will go with the long as they find someone to teach them however, I believe there’s a line which states that water breathing is the easiest style to learn or at least it’s easiest to understand so most people who can’t find the one style trainer they needor is it a part of some family or didn’t make their own style? Just default to water breathing
