@FGaribay7 Thank you - that's a great compliment to the BFI National Archive's restoration team! The reason why the quality is surprisingly good is that the original camera negative still exists. Most early films only survive in badly damaged screening copies - but if the negative survives in reasonably good shape (this one has some chemical decay), the image quality of newly-struck prints will be excellent. After all, 35mm film offers a higher resolution image than high-definition video.
Simply stunning! thanks for posting.
Wow, great piece of history, though I'm not British!
Ooh I remember this one, it was Giggs' first match!
@@sirnasser338 12 years ago that comment of mine. I was 16! Want to go back to those days 😅
This narrators got the perfect soothing voice :)
Fantastic bit of history on film, from a rovers fan.
Absolutely amazing footage
Terrific share! Well worth a Like BFI
fantastic footage.
And for viewers in black & white, Burnley are wearing their famous green shirts!
United web site says: attendance 4000.
Scorers Pegg and OG.
Date: Dec 6 1902.
This is when vincent kompany had just started managing burnley and its now 2022, time flies...
This is awesome this is history!!!
Wow great find
@Boysoldier94119
One thing you can't deny is that football is a much more addicting game to look at compared to that year.
The late great Billy meredith would of played in this game as he switched allegiance from Manchester City for a small fee ( i think it was for a few pints of ale and some tobacco).
No he wouldn't, it was too early, he joined several years later in 1906. He was at Citeh in 1902
impresionante video
No commentary from John Motson? Surprising…
Motson was recovering from his service during the Crimean War. I believe he started commentating in 1904.
Has anybody noticed the people in the background they are really big compared to the other people in the film.
Don't see how this is fake! The kits of the players are from that era and that's how turf moor looked back then and they can't just rebuild the turf and everything around it..... Love this old footage, just something about it makes you love it :)
I'm surprised the players aren't wearing flat caps.
Is this definately 1902?
The fifth player to run out looks very much like Billy Meredith,who didnt sign for United until 1906.
@FGaribay7 not a fake, theres a photo of that old turf moor stadium in the burnley museum. have a look at some of the other films BFI have restored that are of even better quality and try telling me they`re fakes too! its great to watch these old films, how the world we live in has changed in such a short time.
TRULY LAND OF FOOTBALL
I have this on Dvd,and was unable to upload this because of copy right. How did you get past this?
wow,,not much has changed
Not all the fans wearing Caps, wondering it this is indeed a bit further forward in time?
Hayat nekadar kısa herşey yenileniyor sanki tarih hep tekerrür ediyor gibi
@Greg2cool We never played Burnley in 1907
David de gea first Manchester United appearance
mistaken for the famous Brewers Burton United. come on you Brewers
James milner's first season
The narrator said the commentaters often referred to them as ???? United.......could you please tell me what she said....thanks.
Why so sure?
Think I could of made that team!
Is that Giggs sister in law in the crowd?
Burnley !!
Oh that is me who kicked the ball
@FGaribay7 You're right, it's fake. Me and some friends carefully reconstructed a turn-of-the-century football ground, researched design, advertising billboards etc, but the hardest part was the costumes. We had to commission 500 period costumes for the crowd along with the repro cotton football kits and boots. We added the smoke towers etc in the background post-production. The budget was huge, but we feel it was worthwhile for this low key re-enactment.
@decorativeedison After all there is only one.
Burnley would be playing in green in 1902 which was the lighter shade in this clip.

Mark Goldbridge's nightmare.
And to think they wanted Fergie out back then...
@Boysoldier94119
Well maybe there's alot of money going on today. But I prefer the football of today than this one. Today football is more populair, with better players and more speed in the game itself.
Manchester United away okay.....how about the first film at home.
@Kirranium LMAOOOOOO!!!!!!
Up the Clarets. ⚽️
i see Sir Alex Ferguson in the bench
@Kirranium XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
I'm and American and I've learned it seems that Man United is quite hated by Manchester, even though they are a winning team. Can someone tell me why?
Supported by too many glory hunters who have no real love for football and couldn't point out Manchester on a map.
They're not hated in Manchester, biggest and most loved club in the city, that's reality
Because they have sooo many fans who dont I've or come from Manchester or anywhere near it 🚜🚜🚜🚜
Love the referees uniform 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜👍👍
Hhh😂
All the players in this film are dead and they are still better than McTominay, Fred and James.
I was there playing for the club. I score 3 disallowed goals. What a memory. Now I'm 200 years old, still like yesterday.
