Imagine all of those indie developers heavily inspired by Metroid, having created some really good metroidvanias in the last two decades, and having the chance to go back to the foundation of a genre and finding it as solid as it ever was.
I always thought 2D metroid was a top tier Metroidvania even compared to today's indie resurgence. There's just something about the world and the abilities that you acquire that makes the game more unique and interesting than most. That's why I was always was puzzled Symphony of the night was always brought up alongside super metroid.... like sure it's a good game and it does some interesting things but exploration isn't as satisfying, the abilities not as interesting and the game is poorly balanced due to how much freedom it gives.
@@logiclunacy606 I have to say I disagree. Super Metroid is my favourite game of all time, but Castlevania Symphony of the Night has always been number 2 or 3 for me. I think that exploration and abilities are among the best in both games. I can see why some people prefer SOTN.
@@rodrigocaceres2879 I mean that's fine but I felt rather disappointed by it when I finally got round to playing it.... especially compared to rondo of blood which was to me a much better game. The issue I have with Symphony is that, it's just okay, I appreciate how open it is, it's more open than super Metroid however I feel Super metroid and say hollow Knight got the right balance of being open enough to give the player choice but has enough powers within the game to not trivialise the choice of where you want to go. Symphony has an ability to fly which allows you to get nearly anywhere, then there's the fog ability which works on a few gates, a blue key which isn't an ability,, you just kinda buy it. Then there's one use only abilities like the wolf which you only use for one secret and the light for one small area to get to the spikeproof armour that is also used for one very small area. It's like the bat wings just essentially unlock most of the game and the other abilities feel like after thoughts. The upside down castle is very cool but it's a pain to platform through and it is an interesting to padd out the game. I do appreciate the clock puzzle at the end though.
@@logiclunacy606 the way you describe 2D Metroid is how I feel about Hollow Knight, but even more passionately. I’m very excited for this game and love Metroid as a whole, but I have zero expectations for this to top Hollow Knight.
@@TheCatWithTheMAC Well it's more super metroid I'm describing in particular. The other 2d metroids are a lot more linear from what I remember. Super Metroid doesn't top Hollow Knight for me but it is what I consider top tier, despite it's clunky aspects and a few not so special boss fights it is a phenomenal experience that you can find yourself getting lost in. Metroid is really not like other metroidvanias, a lot of the abilities are unique to metroid and the world itself is pretty cool. Would recommend them if you haven't played them.
Im so glad the reviews have been positive for this game, it seems that Metroid truly has returned to glory!

Yea and 3DS version was done deliberately to look washed out and not done that way coz of 3DS capabilities..
Check these games out to see what 3DS is capable of graphically:
Luigis Mansion 2,
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker,
Donkey Kong 3S,
Smash Bros and most of those games are on the Switch, Wii U and look just the same as 3DS version
Also, don't forget when Nintendo worked on the Metroid game for 3DS they was supporting another device at the same time known as the Wii U and even though 3DS should if died Nintendo supported the 3DS 70%
and the Wii U 30% whereas Sony finished the PSvita to 100% support PS3/PS4 customers and Nintendh did the opposite but now Switch is a thing I still don't think Switch was a better idea than 3DS HD that is Bluetooth enabled so can play the device on any TV without the need of wires
The biggest complaint I've seen is very hard bosses and not liking the counter system, but I liked the counter system from Samus Returns (they didn't) and I love bosses that kick my ass, so this seems really great.

Wasn’t sure of this game initially as a newcomer to the series but this review may have just sold me.
@Sirbabybee: Yeah The developer Mercury steam is great at making Metroid games……..I have it pre-ordered and ima take Friday off to play it.
If you've never played a 2d Metroid game, you have been missing some of the best video games ever made. Start with the SNES all time game Super Metroid, which as kid blew my mind and sunk so many hours into it. I just beat it again last week in anticipation for this and it holds up incredibly well to this day. You will not be disappointed in these games.
I really hope you enjoy it! Metroid seems to have had such a small following compared to Nintendo's other more successful franchises, but that small collection of us have so, SO been hoping it gets the reception it's been long deserving of. Fingers crossed this is the entry that allows many newcomers to jump in and really see what all the fuss is about :)

Nintendo is really smart with its franchises. I've never played a Metroid or Zelda game, but with these switch releases, I want to play them! I've only played Mario and Pokémon before so it's good to see those titles doing well as well.

Do it! You do not need to have played the previous ones. Metroid is an amazing, and yet undervalued, series. Every game in this series is amazing (even Other M, the black sheep is decent enough).
The game devs did EXACTLY what they were supposed to do. They perfected the systems put in place in Samus Returns and nailed what people love about this franchise. My only complaint is that I’ll eventually finish the game and will have to wait a few more years until the next one!
Let’s just hope it’s not another couple decades again
Well in the mean time hopefully prime 4 will come out sometime in 2023

I don’t even need this review to be hyped for this game, but the fact that it’s getting glowing reviews is ecstatic enough. As someone who had to endure the severe drought from Other M to Samus Returns, it’s a beautiful blessing to me that we’re not only finally get a brand new, mainline Metroid game, but from the same devs as Samus Returns! Which I already quite enjoyed, and since this seems like an improvement over that, then I already know I’m in for greatness.
I’ve wait from this game since its E3 reveal ‘till now, so I’m definitely gonna try my best to hold out for these two, remaining days until I can finally hold it in my hands.👌🏽

I remember beating the first with my neighbor we were screaming at the end and his mom burst in thinking wevwetr hurt or something
Just finished 100 percenting it, the ending blew me away. And I'm about to start a hard mode playthrough.
While the regular enemies are nothing too insane, the boss fights are pretty big jump in difficulty. I think i have died to every single boss at least once because they hit like a truck. Some of them start doing like 1-2 energy bar worth of damage with a single attack and you just cannot really mess up too much.
This is exactly why this game is rewarding to complete, you just can't brute force your way in it, you actually need to think and develop skills. The difficulty was just perfect
Games like this and hollow knight seems harder than the souls games for me 😂

Is it just me or does the detail and graphics not look as good as everyone is saying? Don't get me wrong, the game looks like an amazing metroid game and I can't wait to play it. But a lot of reviews mention the detail and how beautiful it looks, but it just.... doesn't look that stand-out to me. The background doesn't look like it has a ton of detail. we've seen some other games on switch that look more beautiful. I don't see how it is a "gorgeous adventure" but I'm sure it's a lot of fun.
The devil really is in the details. Looking at it on a phone screen via a youtube video doesn't do it justice. Every area feels like it has so much more depth, you see a bunch of things in the background that really don't need to be there, but it helps make the world feel real. And when the camera pans out for those cinematic counters and such, you almost forget you're even playing a 2D game. What it lacks in impressive graphical fidelity, it makes up for with incredibly smooth and crisp animation and colors that really pop. They made the most out of the budget they had for sure.
I'll admit, I was worried initially because I didn't like Samus Returns that much mainly due to wonky difficulty scaling and issues bought about by it being on the 3DS but uhhhh... Metroid Dread fucking NAILS IT. Well done MercurySteam, I tip my hat to you
I believe that what makes the EMMI encounters work for every type of fan is, as always, options. In Fusion, you had to hide and cower. I can see how some fans would be unhappy about that. In Dread, you can either do that, or stealthily sneak by. Always dependant on the player's skills. Something Metroid, most of the time, tries to keep in mind while developing their games. If you have the skill, you can do what you want how you want.
And! You still have a thrilling chance to escape if you get caught! It always gets my blood pumping no matter how skilled I feel I have become after multiple playthroughs
I am impressed what Mercury Steam did with the Metroid franchise.
Metroid Dread has shown us how the Spanish studio has improved since their Castlevania Lords of Shadow Days.

THE best action game on switch?? Those are big words!! I loved astral chain and think that’s the best action game exclusive to switch so I’m excited to give this a shot as it’s my first Metroid

This game feels like the gameplay of samus returns the graphic style and spectacle cutscenes of other m the tone vibe and difficulty of fusion the world layout and area theming of am2r and the explorative nature of super Metroid
I beat the game yesterday. And it's definitely the best of most elements from the other 2d metroids. And plenty of new stuff which is great too. Probably the most fun I've had with a new game in the past few years
My first ever metroid game, and wow, what a game it is. I am on the final boss battle, but have loved every second of it. They nailed the soundtrack and atmosphere vs the EMMI robots

I bought 2 copies and waiting on the special edition.
One copy for one of my niece. The other one for my daughter. And the special edition for me.
We got Prime 4 coming soon and I think there's rumor they'll be making an sequel to Dread or just another Metroid game that takes place somewhere between thise timeless or an remake to Super. Who knows?

This was the exact game I wanted it to be. Narratively, gameplay, world design, atmosphere, I have no notes. I was worried there might not be enough potential for sequence breaking on replays, but looking up videos after finishing, I can see that isn't the case. I've been waiting for a follow up to Fusion for ages and never thought it could be worth the wait. Damn if I've never been so happy to be wrong.

You think stealth is a new thing in Metroid? Clearly you never played the SA-X sections in Metroid Fusion, or the Zero suit section in Metroid Zero Mission.
Aren't the majority of the SA-X scenes scripted in Fusion tho? Or are restricted to small areas?

Oh great, I will get stressed out again playing Dread just like I was back in the day playing Fusion with the encounters with SA-X... :P Not at all a fan of stealth mechanics, but since I love Metroid, I will certainly play Dread day-one (well, as soon as I receive my copy).

Fusion was fun probably my favorite in the series despite how stressful some of the bosses was.

Hi! How hard did you think it was? As a medium-skilled gamer I just want to know if I could get through it :) like, what kind of games do you compare the difficulty-level to?
Metroid games have a bit higher difficulty for late bosses than Zelda games. But let me put it this way. I played Metroid Prime 2, notoriously the most difficult of the entire series, and beat it to completion as a brand new gamer (it was my first video game in years aside from some Mario Kart as a kid)
I am a little bit above mediam talent and it was very difficult for me prepare to die a lot especially to bosses but you resplendent right before all the bosses and you can skip the cutscenes by pressing + - to save time
I've never played a Metroid game, but Hollow Knight (my all-time favorite game) completely won me over with Metroidvanias, so I am SO looking forward to this one!!
Metroid is where Hollow Knight(/any Metroidvania) got many of it's ideas from, so yeah...you'll feel right at home. ;)

it’s 1600x900 according to nintendoeverything, so right in the middle between both, portable runs at native resolution

I would love a samus returns port because i never got the 3ds veesion so a port/remaster/remake of samus returns 3ds would be a joy
I've watched a couple other Dread reviews today, and yours was easily the best and least spoilery.
Super excited. Can't wait to pick this up with my OLED Switch and play in the dark with some hot chocolate and a soft blanket. Going to start Halloween early and get lots of candy too 🥳🥳

Dread's pretty good but those EMMI sections are tedious instead of being scary, I _Dread_ stopping the fun exploration to run around avoiding EMMI's to get to that brain room.
I've been waiting for dread since I was a kid with a GBA. Was so excited to get a "shipped" notice today for my order.
I can vouch that Metroid Dread looks good on my Nintendo Switch (red box version).

Super Metroid? That was my all time favorite Metroid game.
I'm so glad you can bomb jump in this game. They stopped allowing that in most of the metroids but I thought I'd test it and I'm glad I did. It's bringing back super metroid vibes. I'll be taking full advantage of that mechanic ;] .
The only one i can think of that doesn't allow it is fusion.
All other (2d) metroids allow infinite bomb jumping except for Fusion and the original Metroid 1 and 2. Even the Primes allow you to do atleast double bomb jumps.
I'm guessing the re-upload was due to *specific* footage being removed? Maybe?

I remember the day I popped in Metroid 2 on my gameboy. It hooked me. Made me draw maps and strategy guides :D
5:05 I hope so because fusion had some annoying boss fights. One thing I must know - can you IBJ?!? Wall jumping also looks dwarfed. Still a day one pickup for me.
no, bomb jumps work just like in fusion, as in it’s delayed enough to not be infinite, at least you can jump with the morph ball as soon as you get it instead of needing to get the spring ball or hi-jump boots, also i found out you can single wall jump with an upgrade about 3 hours in but it’s pretty hard to pull

the only complaint I have is the controls. They should give you the option to move and aim with the D-Pad and leave the L button for aiming and walking instead of just the left stick and no option for walking considering this game has stealth portions to it (EMMI) areas.

It was a fun but quick game. I enjoyed the game so much i didn't realize I was at the end. I played for 3 days about 10 hours total and now I just want to 100% the game because ot ends up too quickly

how does aiming work? all with the right stick? computer-assisted? because i am concerned how much precision aiming could be involved...
It's annoying just like SR
to use free aim you hold L and aim with the control stick, but you still can shoot like in the old metroid by just tilting the stick while moving. i never found it annoying personally

Ya. Pathetic 10+ hours for for hard earned 60 dollars.
Map is very big, lots of secrets to discover, about 12 hours to beat, some more for 100%. Story is very good, fitting to the first 4 games.
Seen a few reviews say 10-12 hours. Was hoping for at least 25-30 hours 🤔
It's twice as long as most 2D Metroids. 25-30 hours would've been 5-6 times as long as previous 2D Metroids.

This game really worth the money, imo.
Does the game have an easy difficulty level?
No. It has a normal one and a Hard Mode that you unlock after beating it. But there are auto saves before EMMI areas and bosses, so you usually never lose lots of progress.
Picking up my copy Friday. Absolutely stoked. I enjoyed Samus Returns, didn’t like the parrying element but it was quality for certain. I honestly wish that Nintendo would have been at the helm, but regardless I’m happy to play a proper 2D Metroid.
