I think the older you get the more these traits show because you are tired of trying to mask them. That is how I feel about myself.

At 55yrs old I don't push myself anymore into uncomfortable, unpleasant situations I thought 'I should' participate in to 'fit in'. Such a relief to just relax. Just because a peer group appear to enjoy certain things doesn't mean what they enjoy participating in will appeal to everyone. There is nothing wrong with enjoying what you enjoy. It's your life, enjoy it the way you like x

Hey you do you, babe. Life is short. I'm into hobbies and interests that nobody I know of in my town or even in the neighboring towns are into. So in order for me to take classes and actually participate and practice in these hobbies means I would have to move bc it's not offered here. I'm from the deep south and everybody here is the same. Clone after clone, and I feel sorry for them that they don't have the guts and the power to free themselves from the vortex of sameness. Cowards all of them!

Well, I think you just explained what no doctor has been able to figure out. I just randomly fall down a lot. I walk into walls that I am walking parallel with, and have come close to hurting myself a number of times. It is so bad that I used to have a dog to help me stay upright on my feet. I am planning on getting a new one and training it to do the same thing along with alert to several other things for me, especially migraines. Which seems to be my sensory overload reaction. Instead of crying and other things outwardly, I internalize and get horrific migraines. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I am 57 and just got diagnosed. Learning a lot about myself!

i think another thing is substance abuse i feel like most people wouldn't ever connect the two or consider someone with an addiction may have autism. if you think about it, drinking for some is the only way to comfortably stop masking around people and before getting diagnosed for me it was the only way my brain would stop masking even alone. luckily i got help before too long but that along with my somewhat addictive personality i quickly became a nightly drinker i think autism and addiction can happen together especially when people go years without a diagnosis

    • @zoehancock
      @zoehancock Před 2 lety +1

I'm certain I have ADHD, I realised the years ago. My daughter who got an asd diagnosis a year ago thinks I might be autistic too. I drank nightly from my late teens until the age of thirty when I quit. It's only recently that it dawned on me it was a way of my not having to mask- drunk people are rather like ADHD people. Once I stopped drinking I still went to the pub nightly as when hanging out with drunk people you still don't need to mask as they won't notice. I still really like having our with drunk people- for years I though it was a contact high, but it's just allowing myself to express my office train of thought.

Hey this is the story of an aspergers from India..
Today after watching this video I am 101 percent sure that I have aspergers. I have some self realisation
    1. 90 percent of time my brain becomes stuck/overwhelmed due to n number of thought processing at one point of time.. So that I forgot who I am? I fee lost.. Struggle to keep track of my thinking/feelings
    2. I can remember a lot of situation specially in the office where I feel so overwhelmed that I go to washroom to catch some breath/hold my head in a situation I know I can't handle myself.
3.I believe I am not able to understand the feeling of people if they are joking around/serious/ .. I always go very deep into the meaning of conversation with someone so I fail to crack the essence of the topic.
    4. I feel most of the time I am very egoistic and can't take jokes etc.. Because I feel nobody is understanding me and my feelings.
    5. I don't understand that nobody has the power to hurt me and most of the time they don't want to because they also have feelings.
    6. I discovered that it is the fluctuations of emotions which are controling me like sudden joy/anger/jealousy/insecurity etc.
    7. If someone's praise can't make me happy why should I worry if they scold me??
    8. I believe mixing with kindhearted non aspie people making me understand jokes/more emotions/helping me to take quick decision etc.
    9. Most vital thing in this condition is self hurting feelings which overflows all the time and being unnecessary critical of yourself thinking about how others will dislike me
    10. I again believe that I have realized these things very late on my thirties which I should have realised probably in my teen age. I blame my condition/bad upbringing /lacknofself awareness for this late realisation..
    11. MY GOAL IS TO UNDERSTAND THE WORLD BETTER AND BE MORE EMPHATIC TOWARDS OTHERS...
    Love ❤❤❤ to all

Good video Dan. I have an amazing sense of rhythm, but can't learn dance steps, have perfect pitch but can't read music. I've learned to keep quiet on subjects that interest me because I absolutely hate seeing the glazed expression in other people's faces. Yes I can read people enough to know I bore them ha. People aren't interested in what I have to say so I don't say much. I masked alot when younger, and made friends but they lost interest because I wasn't entertaining enough and eventually dropped me or I dropped them first for using me. I have good ideas but rarely get listened to. I don't mask as much now and I have more energy as a result which is good. However I dont trust people enough to be myself around them which is bad. Khaki t-shirt suits you. Hat less so, esp as you have good hair 😉

I am very much as described with the first 4 traits. Oh, I was always the slowest with every possible excersise at school, I completly could not follow even the easiest dance steps, I hated it. But with alone time, in my case it is slightly different, I am not sure if I can explain it well. I actually always wanted to be around people and be in a group of friend. However, I was always awkward and clumsy, so all throuough school and university I didn't have many colleagues. And in time I got more socially anxious because I was often bullied (even by my chemistry teacher in high school), and I was stressed with human interactions. Right now I have got a bunch of amazing friends from my work, and I really love to hang out with them, and they accept me as I am, and know that I have aspergers + adhd (not diagnosed yet but I am sure I have it). It really makes me happy to have those people. On occasions I also love to go crazy drink and party (in a nice environment, if I don't have to mask myself). We are all scientists so nerdy stuff are alright to talk about. But I do still have issues with knowing when to speak, and I will need to have alone time if I see people for longer while. I also usually really hate to stay overnight even with the closest friends, so I usually walk back home even in the middle of the night (though they sometimes wont let me). And I really hate crowds, like sometimes this is actually annoying, because I love metal music and I would like to see some great bands live once... and I live near to a town with some yearly biggest metal festivals... I missed so many of my favorite bands coming there, but I know I just will go meltdown in such a crowd... I reasonably liked to attend small gigs before corona, because metal people, as far as my experience goes, tend to be really nice. Also if I am alone for too much time, I start to get really depressed and anxious. I have this anxiety, because I think that maybe no one wants to see me (maybe this is ADHD thing). Ao overall, I am not sure if I prefer alone time, I want to have both, to extent that I know is meltdown-safe.

I think as I have gotten older my traits have become more prominent and certain aspects have gotten worse like my social anxiety. I was able to work and deal with people when I was younger, but over the last number of years, the thought of working and dealing with people scares me, especially living in Miami Florida where there is a large Hispanic community and I don't speak much Spanish even though my wife is Hispanic. There are other things that have gotten worse as I have gotten older, but social anxiety is the worst.

Hi I am a parent of a 4 year old recently diagnosed with autism in the fall. Your videos have been very enlightening. I always suspected since I took psych 101 in the 90’s that I had some autistic traits & my husband definitely does as well. We are fully functional successful adults. But it was no surprise to me that our 2nd child was diagnosed. With that said, he did have a speech delay with therapy beginning at age 2. We are continuing to work on it but he is much more conversational now with speech & ABA. I just wanted to point out to any parent who might be worried about the speech delay definitely check out Temple Grandin’s story if you have not yet. And to point out that Einstein had a speech delay as well. So there is hope for our children especially with early aggressive therapy. Also if you suspect your child is autistic please just have them evaluated even if they are as young as 18 months because at least in the USA there is an insane amount of resources opened up to autistic children. And adults. It’s easy to think your child will be stigmatized but they won’t. Since his diagnosis, my son has had so much more help and opportunities opened up to him. ABA is totally covered in most states as you will qualify for Medicaid regardless of income status. Although it can be tricky to navigate the system, just power through the hurdles. Also other interventions such as therapeutic horseback riding is reimbursed at least where I live with his disability status. Anyway I just wanted to throw it out there to any parent with a child suspected of having autism. Even with the diagnosis many parents are not aware of the available resources for their children. Thank you for your videos! They have been so helpful!

For me, my obsessive subject is bodybuilding. I also have an above average IQ. Also fun fact Elon Musk has Asperger’s too.

I was terrible at dancing lessons. In fact the others would come up and tell me I danced so badly in the recital that I embarrassed them. Also I am not a good shot with firearms, I can’t hit the broadside of a barn from a foot away.
Last but not least I have a nasty case of Dysgraphia!!! You should see my handwriting it is terrible!!!

Oh so me. Fell down stairs, didn't know why, broke my ankle. Went to physiotherapy where they found I had no balance, didn't know why. Dyspraxia, who knew? Called shy my whole life. Have never felt lonely. Question tho', I don't daydream, never have. Is that a thing?

Um... that's a bit confusing about the IQ. I read that it's pretty much 45% above average, 55% below average in autism.

So, first an unrelated topic - the focus of this video is not up to your usual standards. Please understand that this is an observation, not a judgement of your quality as a you-tuber (I'm sure that you've had to say things like that many times).
    - Oh, motor skills, especially gross motor skills.... I run into things a lot, get bruised a lot. My fine motor skills are pretty good, except handwriting, which is terrible. In fact, when I started studying Russian in High School, my handwriting at the beginning was far better in Russian than in English... until I started thinking in sentences, and simply became more accustomed to the Cyrillic alphabet..... now my Russian is as bad as my English.
    - I hate parties. They are boring, going out to drink is even more boring, and all wonderful opportunities for me to disappoint the aliens (also not a value judgment) called my peers.
