Hendrix is close- but this band ( probably due to the strong jazz background of Jack and Ginger) - made this trio magical. Dominos, (tho a Quartet)- came very very close in the greatness. Maybe as great but in a different way.

A blip of two years as a band, and they're still one of the best bands that's ever been. So, yea. They've stood the test of time...

Bands in that era were often as short-lived as they were groundbreaking: Jimi Hendrix Experience/Band of Gypsies, Traffic I, Blind Faith, Doors, Blind Faith, Them, Faces, Big Brother & Holding Company, Creedence...

Ginger made the drums talk. Jack made the bass talk. Eric made the guitar talk. It was 2 thirds improvisational jazz, 1 third electric blues, and another third (impossible, I know) shear balls.

For the Original, and decades later still the greatest power trio and 'Supergroup' of all time, with all three members being brilliant virtuoso musicians.

Truly great band whose phenomenal live performances have become the stuff of legend! I think Stigwood may have toured them rather too intensively in the U.S., which must have exhausted them. Eric has always been a restless soul musically, so I guess he would have left at some point anyway! ❤

Laughingly funny how some claim Bonham or Moon were equal to Baker. No comparison - former were great rock drummers - loud and aggressive but technically and creatively limited - lack Baker's subtlety and rhythmic sophistication. Baker could lightly swing like Jones or Roach then suddenly stun you with those heavy, explosive bursts of Afro-influenced brilliance. No one like him before or since.

    • @gilldanier4129

Baker was a steam train, you could almost see the steam coming out his ears. Most other drummers are roller skaters

Of course they stood the "test of time". But nowadays, the reality of current music is the factor which is making every band of the 60,s (not onlt the best ones), stand it. There is nothing good today😔

That's not true, it's just very difficult to find. Main stream? No, nothing worthwhile there, I would agree, but there are some good bands that don't have a lot of recognition.

Rather than quitting for good the best thing any one of them ever did, couldn't they have just taken a few months' break to let off the stress from the relentless Stigwood-imposed touring, use the time to pen fresh songs, and return as the greatest band next to the Beatles?

Awesome cream were probably the best group musically until led zeppelin, including JHE + Who in their sixties' prime. Of course the latter got better after woodschlock. However, they should've tried adding Steve Winwood once bass + drums agreed to not be such pricks. Clapton was another problem, believing that rolling stone garbage while loving the band? They defined "overrated." In his defense maybe stopping was right because we got bf + the dominos! Trio lost magic 1993 hof and 2000s. Funny how only ec achieved mainstream success after 1970. Hmmm.

Bonham and Moon were recorded better and in more powerful songs. You can't compare studio recording of 'won't get fooled again' or 'good times bad times' with 'wrapping paper' for example :) Sadly, Ginger's best recordings were live Cream. As most jazz drummers he didn't care much about his foot technique but his toms and polirhytmics were amazing. While Keith Moon is completely technically undefined and uneducated, he was wild and he influenced so many. Bonham is the most influential drummer of all times, he defined the way drums are thought of ever since, he was also lucky to play with LZ where his talent came to show. I agree Ginger could be more respectful but as I heard they were all good friends and I'm pretty sure Ginger was telling the same into their faces while they were alive. I heard some poor live performances by Bonham and Moon where they are speeding or slowing down, but I never heard that with Ginger. Anyway I love them all but Ginger educated me the most.
