NYC's Best Chicken & Waffles and Soul Food Buffet at Jacob's Restaurant & Amy Ruth's in Harlem

- During my trip to New York, I was feeling a little tired and just needed a comforting meal. What better opportunity to do some exploring for New York's best and finest soul food restaurants! And so, the adventure begins with a trip to Harlem on fine Sunday morning. The sun is out, the birds are singing and my stomach is growling.
The exploration began with a quick trip on the subway which took me to an iconic Jacob's Restaurant. Having never really tried soul food, I was in for a treat as Jacob's serves their diners buffet style! All the variety you can think of in one place and in one plate (or three), from the tender lucious oxtails to the melt in your mouth sticky ribs and all things in between. collard greens? yes Mac & Cheese? make it a double helping. Tasty, clean and friendly, it was quite the pleasant experience.
And what soul food journey would this be without a taste of the essential chicken and waffles! So a little later that day, I took a stroll down Malcom X Blvd and headed down to Amy Ruth;s for their famous Chicken & Waffles. Upon entering, I was greeted by incredibly friendly hosts and vivid empowering murals throughout the restaurant. As much as I love a buffet, I always enjoy a made to order meal especially when it fried chicken that best served immediately and this is exactly how Amy Ruth's does it. Crispy juicy friend chicken on a bed of equally crispy yet fully waffles, this meal certainly filled the soul. Thank you so much for joining me on this tour of Harlem.

Oh, there was so much food on both occasions. Really enjoyed Harlem especially meeting all of the great people there. What's not captured in the videos where the conversations with the people there like Curtis and others. Genuinely great people, very welcoming and inviting. The one thing I did regret was not mentioning or focusing on the rich historic events there.
Tim thank you for showing the world delicious soul food. I am going back to New York soon and Jacobs is on the list. Everything looks delicious.

I have been to Jacob's many times on W. 129th Street in Harlem. Their food is excellent!

Jacobs is my joint.The food is always delicious, fresh and feels more homely and love the live entertainment.The place can get very cramped tho especially on the weekends.
Coming from a Carolina gal, I give 5 stars from the watch! Jacobs had me full just watching! And Amy Ruth's... 🙏Lord that red velvet cake took me out! Looked absolutely delicious 🤤 seriously! The icing and nuts on it were on point. And I don't know what you were drinking but the soda looked very crisp and cold and good! I salute you for having Mac n cheese and grits in one setting! My stomach would have busted! And also I don't know your ethnicity, which I am thinking Asian or Japanese but I want to thank you for stepping out into black owned restaurants. And sharing your experience! Not saying that as being funny but honest. I never hardly see that so I'm shocked and I am very happy to see you supporting black people. I keep wondering how that cream soda taste ❤ here I love the A&W cream soda in SC. It's delicious ❤. I'm from NC my favorite soda is Sundrops. Both flavors. Keep going Tim Lee! ❤

By-the-pound buffets..so popular during the 80s and 90s in Korean markets..the trick was not to fill your container with large bones...😎

@@TimLeeLetsGo I was a pro at the by-the-pound buffet....Id work the bottom of trays with the boned meats, as you'd find lots of stripped meat at the bottom.. And never add salad dressing.. Blue cheese weighs a ton..😅

GREAT video, Tim! I LOVE how much you loved the food. A lot of the food from Jacob's reminds me of the big meals my Grandma used to make.

I notice soulfood buffet style restaurants have some of the best tender turkey. It literally falls apart. Idk how they do it. My family makes very juicy brined turkey but these buffet places hit it spot on. I miss living in NYC for these types of spots. Especially this one on Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn 🤤😋

Another great city for soul food and southern cooking is Memphis, TN. They have great fried chicken.
Soul food is my absolute favorite! Especially oxtails with pigeon peas over rice with delicious oxtail gravy, some stewed cabbage and fried sweet plantains!
Those sauces and gravies are so flavorful... I could certainly use an oxtail stew right about now

That was a great buffet at Jacobs! Of course, I would go heavy on the oxtail, short ribs & pork ribs! The chicken & waffles were just OK!

Jacob's was definitely my favorite too! Man, that oxtail and the short ribs were out of this world. Unfortunately, I don't think I did justice to the visit having failed to mention the rich historic events there.
Food looks delicious but when I think of buffet it’s all you can eat for a set price, not by the pound. Although it’s set up like a buffet, that’s too expensive! I went to Sylvia’s many years ago and it was amazing!!
