This is a great update. The new cab blocks are so good, and I like the Sunn amps.
GREAT overview - thanks! I can't wait to play around with this stuff this weekend.
Cannot wait fr the weekend ! All those sounds you made were great.Thank you
Thanks for the overview of the features. I update my HX Stomp about an hour ago, and everything went well. I just followed the instructions carefully, and had no problems. This really is an impressive update, and the new Cab Engine, and all the Parameters are very useful. I've been enjoying flood of videos on this update.
Have fun on your gig tomorrow. 😎
I will try! I get a little nervous every time I think about it haha
Thank You for the heads up! Had not heard this was coming. Always appreciate your in-depth discussions and knowledge. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
These updates are always a total surprise! I'm not a part of the beta tester community so I don't really know any more than anyone else
A few mins in and already liked & subbed...excellent video man! Can't wait to finish the rest! 👏
Thank you! I just released another 3.50 tip video yesterday 🎸
Very in depth explanation, and much appreciated! Congrats on the guitar, I've seen KoL 6 times mostly at Bonnaroo
It's a beautiful instrument! Matt had something like 10 guitars on consignment when I was at Carter's. There are probably a few more still there
Nice to see a deep dive like this Alex! I just updated my HX Stomp and love the flexibility of the new cabs so far. The Pillar is pretty nice as well.
I love that we have so many tubescreamers to choose from. The new drives are great.
I know right. It’s unbelievable how much the HX Stomp has changed since I started using it back in 2019! I love line 6 and have been a customer of theirs since the DL4 and M9 lol
The only person I will trust to listen to about helix!
Thank you for informations. Greetings from Montreal!
Great value content, man, thx!
Glad it helped!
Have a great time at the gig! :)
The Vital boost is awesome
I built my own 2 button footswitch, originally cloning one that cost $60, then modified it to also be a pass through for adding a button and my expression pedal. Cost me less than $22.50 and was fun to design.
This update is so nice, gonna be messing around with stock cabs again this weekend and comparing them to my IRs, I have high hopes that I can get great sound more easily than using my IRs!
I’ve always been happy with the stock cabs, but having more flexibility over mic placement is so cool
Great overview of the new update! You’ve probably been asked this a lot, but where did you get that plastic cover for your HX stomp? Makes it look super sharp! 👌
www.gearbyceba.com - it’s a plexiglass protector and I think the volcano skin
The new stuff sounds great. It feels like I can get a really great sound with just amp, cab and ambience. Only problem is that I did the update from hx edit on my floor model. I followed the prompts but it crashed my helix saying boot failure. I had to download the firmware and use line6 updater and all is well. I didn't update hx edit first because the procedure from edit didn't tell me to. Maybe that's where I went wrong. Anyway don't cry like I did. Get the updater or read the instructions properly which I still haven't done😅
Hey! I've been watching your videos for a while and really gotten so much out of my Helix with your recs. I was wondering if you have used Helix Native, or other plug in amp and fx modelers, and what your thoughts are? I have Bias Amp 2 and love it, but it just doesn't have effects. Before going for Bias Fx 2 I wanted to learn more about Helix Native and consider it as an option. I know it's not a standalone which is one drawback, but it still seems like a great option, especially to group with my HX Stomp. Interested in your input, and thanks for all you do!
Thank you for this deep dive. There is only one thing which really annoys me, and i am sure i'm not the only one. Mute your mic when you play guitar. Sound of plain strings mixed with helix processed sound heavily changes the sonic impression of how the helix souund itself. You basically can't hear the attack dynamic etc... Every DAW allow this sidechain processing that one of your channel controls the gate of the second so when you play your MIC channel is muted.
Right, I’ve done it plenty in previous videos. It’s not as reliable as you would think and requires a ton of attention to manually adjust areas, even once the threshold is dialed in. If it were a shorter video I might’ve considered but that section of the video alone was 45 minutes before I trimmed it down so if I had wanted that effect, I would’ve had to listen through and automate each moment. Making this video took somewhere around 8 hours from hitting record to finally releasing on CZcams so sometimes you just can’t do everything.
For example I often tend to talk over the end of notes or move back and forth between guitar and talking very quickly. There’d be many moments where the speech wouldn’t come through. Or vice versa if I sidechain the gate in the reverse way. And an ordinary gate on the vocal mic just doesn’t work. Basically, it’s just way more work than it’s worth sometimes.
Was thinking the same.

Nice update and video. What headphones are you using? Is a headphone amp necessary when using helix?
I’m using the Sennheiser HD650’s. They’re a little overkill but they’re worth it. Check out the Beterdynamic DT990. You shouldn’t need an external headphone amp at all unless you get some pair that’s 300ohms+. The DT990 you can get in 32ohm, 80ohm, or 250ohm. All three will work fine with the Helix. If you want to use it with consumer products, you may find some headphones amps (on phones, computers, etc) aren’t powerful enough to driver them to a reasonable volume. If you want a good set of headphones to use anywhere, get the 80ohm DT770’s (closed back) or DT990’s (open back - sound better but some noise escapes = not good for recording).
amzn.to/3T8EgAB
I have my effects with cabs and IR and the ame effects without to play with my amp and cab, we just need the cab sim and IR to record or to play with monitors and headphones.
Does the HX Stomp have less new presets than the bigger Helix? I did the factory restore and I only have some of the new ones...
Awesome as always, thanks Alex. I’d love it if they did a mega bad update!
Bass? Me too. I've been hoping for an amp model a little more neutral - like a Gallen Krueger or Mark Bass style solid state model.
@@AlexPriceMusician I just want more bass gear. I only play bass outside. Personally was thinking more heavy stuff! But more is more
The EQD Life pedal is actually a collab with the band SunnO)), the architecture of the pedal itself is based on a RAT. Great vid tho!! I'd love to get a Helix someday.
Thank you! That explains the "filter" parameter. I always appreciate corrections
Hey man, being that you own the hx stomp, do you notice any limitations with the unit even with the new firmware?
I have the LT but I'm just finding it too bulky for my living situation, hence needing the tinier footprint. I also have the hx effects to pair with the stomp
I've always been happy with the smaller units. I own the original Stomp and the XL. The XL is fully capable of being my entire rig. The original Stomp I believe is more made to be used alongside other pedals.
There are a few effects that make things limited on the smaller devices - pitch shifting being a major one but generally for standard guitar sounds, these pedals are more than enough.
I put out this video recently on getting the most out of a single preset on the smaller units - czcams.com/video/XNxNXYLZxo4/video.html
Ah yes, i figured. I use octave/pitch shifting effects quite a bit so running low on dsp would be an issue. Wonder how free it gets with the 68-80% decrease from the new IRs. Like i said, i have the hx effects to handle that stuff anyway so maybe it'll be okay.
Awesome, I appreciate your response! 👍
Have you seen the size of some pedalboards? Mine for example is 40x16. The LT fits on the smallest of stages, perfect for all live situations. I really feel that you're making it an issue when I really can't understand how it affect's the space in your "living situation." I'm in a small apartment and as long as I put things away, I could have several large pedalboards stacked in cases and pull out the one I need at the moment. My friend lived in an even smaller apartment with the smallest living room I've ever seen and even he had room for his pedalboard.
I own the HX Stomp because I already had $5000 worth of a pedalboard. After having it for a while though, I realized the HX Stomp XL is the better choice, only it didn't exist when I got mine. This is how I see it. If you have lots of pedals, go with the HX Stomp XL. If you really don't have anything, go with the full Helix. I almost never recommend the LT or regular Stomp, it's always worth it to save for the better one. The HX Stomp XL is only $50 more and the LT doesn't have the screens and a couple of other useful things. You'd be loosing way too much if you downgrade, not worth it IMO. Keep using the LT.
Alex why do you have a DI box between your stomp and your interface?
A few reasons, but primarily it's for the ground lift. It's also nice to be able to rely on the venue to provide XLR cables instead of bringing TRS to male XLR cables or using an unbalanced connection and having someone else bringing a DI box. The thru outputs are also nice to have when I was to run my own personal monitor on stage.
The life pedal has an octave fuzz type octave UP effect, not an octave down.
life pedal was a collab between eqd and Sunn O))) not the amp manufacturer if im not mistaken.
Correction made, thanks!
Do you know how to restore from backup but also get the new Factory Presets, thanks!
Make a backup of your device, then perform a factory reset. Click and drag the presets that you want out of HX Edit and somewhere safe. Then restore from your backup. You’ll have the new presets and your old ones.
@@AlexPriceMusician brilliant! Thank you and your video has been one of the best I’ve seen explaining the new update.
la volaita. no veré este video solo porque no tengo pensado comprarme una helix en un futuro cercano
Cool, and don’t mean to be cork-sniffy, but still not on par with Fractal.
Did you know a Lexus is not as nice as a Lamborghini? What a dumb statement, 3xs the price. A Mexican fender isn't as good as a custom shop, is your mind blown?
@@patrickmcpartland1398 No it isn't. My Fractal FM3 was $999, dummy
“Cork-sniffy” 😂
Just far too much fiddling and options paralysis for me
The Helix is about as user friendly as they come as far as modelers go. I always say just to start out with a simple amp tone and add effects that you’re already familiar with. If you pull up a chorus effect for example, it’s already going to come pre-programmed with a decent and common chorus tone. No need to explore parameter adjustments at first. When you’re ready to go further, the Helix is a fantastic learning tool.
That's like saying there's far to many videos on CZcams so basically cable is better
It's really not. I strongly feel that people see these type of comments on YT and forums and just relay the message like a good "parrot" would. As Alex said "it's very user friendly." I got my HX Stomp for $500. This was before the price increase and with an additional $100 off. I often tell people the HX Stomp should sell for more money for all that you get. Talk about the value I'm getting for what I payed, it was a no brainer decision. There's been 3 updates to the unit since I got mine and each one has made the device even better. This is the one purchase I've made that just keeps on giving. Best $500 spent "ever" probably.
I sold my Helix last year. Biggest mistake I have ever made. I ordered a new Helix floor today and am going crazy waiting to get it.
Alex. I need help. I started the update but I let my computer go to sleep. Now all of my amp models sound the same. It’s like they are permanently turned off. I’ve done the factory reset and that did not help the amps. I need to reflash the update but I don’t know how.
Maybe try searching the Line 6 website and see if you can restore to a previous firmware and then try it again? If that doesn’t work, I would get in contact with Line 6. They have great customer support
The go to sleep option is one of the first things you disable when setting up a computer for music production. Either turn the screen off manually or shut down the computer. I hope you can sort it out and let us know the outcome of your particular situation.
@@tenzura Thanks for the info. I am new to the computer interfacing with instruments scene. I was able to get help from Line 6 and got it back up and running. I now have my screen sleep disabled LOL!
