Kamakhya Temple, perched atop the Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam, is one of the most venerated Shakti Peethas in India. It is dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya, an incarnation of Sati, and is associated with the legend of Lord Shiva and his wife Sati's self-immolation at her father Daksha's yagna (sacrifice). It is said that Sati's womb and genitals fell at the site where the temple stands today.
The temple is a significant pilgrimage site for devotees of the Tantric sect of Hinduism and is revered for its powerful 'tantric shaktis'. It is also well-known for the annual Ambubachi Mela, a festival that draws thousands of pilgrims and tantric sadhus from different parts of India and the world. During this time, the temple remains closed for three days and then reopens to celebrate the 'earth's menstruation', symbolizing fertility and the power of procreation.
Architecturally, the Kamakhya Temple is distinctive with its beehive-like shikhara and has been renovated multiple times over its long history, which is evidenced by the various styles of sculptures and carvings that adorn the temple complex. Inside, the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) houses not an idol but a revered rock fissure in the shape of a yoni (female genitalia), flowing with a natural spring, further emphasizing the temple's association with fertility and the feminine power of Shakti.
