      Nothing like an older Cat--big horsepower, lots of muscle and a great turbo. Sounds like it could move mountains in minutes.

    This brings back memories. When I was seven, my grandfather had just sold his farm. Four of these things were lined up and ready to flatten the fields and fill the small pond on the property. No one was around to stop me and already having had experience driving my Grandpa's Massey Ferguson tractor while the guys loaded hay onto the wagon it was pulling, I figured I was well enough acquainted with heavy equipment to give one of these babies a go. I climbed up and poked around and got one to start right away, and off I went, playing with the steering pulls and slowly plodding across the field. Then I couldn't figure out, though, how to turn it off so I jumped off of the big platform and ran for it. Fortunately my uncle was running after it after seeing me climb up and scrambled up the back and stopped it. When I grew up I tried a lot of shit jobs for women before going into civil engineering design, and have for the past 30 years done that and believe it or not, got my OSHA certification! Let me tell you, all the good toys are gone.

    Those big Cats have a sound of confidence. No screaming RPM's, , just a little 'bump' on the governor when it needs a brief "oomph" in power. Love it.

  • @67NewEngland
    @67NewEngland Před 5 lety +1

    I used to work in heavy equipment repair with an old timer who once worked alongside my father repairing Cats. He told me back in the 70's a Arab company came to northeastern US buying up every cable dozer they could find since it was easier to fix than learning how to fix hydraulics in the Middle East . They rolled into a site where they were doing a service call and wanted to find the machine owner to pay cash and hall the dozer off. Reminds me of how the Japanese bought up bunches of muscle cars when the economy crashed in the late 80's and no one wanted to be in the market.

    I've Often wondered the same thing. Just off the top of my with the video's I've seen, it's gotta be around 2 older three-axle scrapers, an elevating scraper, old grader, a D7, 2-3 D8s, 2-3 D9's, a 988A, a first gen 235 excavator, and a backhoe. I'm sure there are more judging my their plot. Lol, an absolute playground for us CAT fans.

    Let the starting engine warm her up a bit--no need for ether. Roll her with compression off till she picks up oil pressure, then kick compression on , no throttle. After 4-5 minutes or less she'll go when you crack the throttle.

    • @ASPCOT
      @ASPCOT Před 5 lety

      Nah......we used the stuff for decades way up north in the cold where the old things wouldn't start without it, ether. Some people have started fires underneath of dozers just to get engines to fire up in the cold or thaw tracks stuck to the ground, froze fast.

      The throttle is lever operated by hand. It is also the fuel cut-off so you can stop the engine. You can feel a detent when you pull it from engine stop to engine idle speed. That is where you start the engine. Once running and ready to go to work, you open the throttle lever to full open. It will stay there usually until you stop the machine to get off or service. At any rate, as long as you are working you don't touch the throttle lever, you simply depress the floor mounted decelerator to lower power output, shift from forward to reverse, or whatever. Makes it easy to do work where you have to be careful, like working close to something.
