I am six years old again! Our Grami just picked my brother and me up and is taking us up to her house 'til my mom gets home from work. Such a great car to ride around in! It'll be an afternoon of snacks, some fresh brewed iced tea and Speed Racer on the black and white TV. Man, I wish I had that car! Our Grami passed away in 2008 at 93 and I just lost my big brother, 59 years old, this past July 4th.
Seeing your VW reminds me just how much I loved mine. It was my first car at 18! I drove it backwards and forwards to university - over 400 miles with steep hills curves and bad surfaces. It never, never went wrong - unlike the newer, more sophisticated mk 1 Ford Escort I had after that (God awful thing - odd, minor things things would go wrong on it all the time). Thinking back and having driving the some roads in much more modern cars since, it didn't need speed to make good average time. Once it got some momentum it just carried on. This is just what Dr Porsche intended in his original design. What was so great about it? It was more fun to drive than a modern car - it was just so involving.
It's a bugs life. As my uncle Stew once said. VW invented the bed bug quote. because once you get bitten by the bug you wont sleep due to wanting to drive the beetle as much as you can.
I learn to drive on a bug when I was 13, my uncle taught me, all of my life there has been a bug in the family, my dad owns a 92 Mexican beetle, now I'm 35 and just bought a 63 that is being painted and bagged with a all round disc brake conversion. My son will be taught to drive in it when he's geta to that age. 🙏
I noticed the driver in this video had his elbow resting on the sill of the open window. This is something I always did with my 1960 beetle it was so comfortable driving this way when the weather was good
Thanks for keeping that little gem on the road and in such good shape! With a camber bar and a bit of finesse it's a drift King on wet roads... Youth wasted on the young, I might just trade my 330 for a Bug, to finish my run with memories of High School...
The 63 beetle was my very first car (1973), and it holds a special place in my heart. It had a stock 40 HP engine with the 6V electrical system. I put 6V Cibie Z-beam headlights in it which made a world of difference. It would go anywhere in the snow and I enjoyed driving it the way you seem to. You cannot make a car like this today, they are legislated out of existence. If I had mine again, I wouldn't sell it.
Missoula, Montana!!!....I'm from Ontario, Canada, bought my vw bus from there, picked it up and drove it all the way home. I really enjoyed it there; beautiful place.
@@tecate9408 i know this is a very late reply but hoping you are still active on CZcams and into VWs. We are actually moving to the Big island in about a year and a half. How is the VW scene there now?

Awesome! I'm originally from TX but about 35 years ago we were on our way to Banff for vacation and my moms bus broke down here in Missoula and it took a week or so to get the parts and fixed. In that short period of time my mom fell in love with Missoula and we moved up here shortly after! :) Cool we both have a Bus story involving Missoula :)
SWEET '63 Beetle, and although I own a 1999 New Beetle GLS 2.0, I also happen to own a 1963 Bus as well, a Kombi (Type 231), in which I dubbed "PimpWagen", I've owned her since 2002, I bought her for only $1,200, and perhaps saved it from a fate worse than death...... possible neglect from the previous owner!!! Anyhow, I have taken great care of her since, she had a lot of un-VW and un-Bus-like gear jerry-rigged in her (Beetle speedometer, Stewart Werner fuel gauge, combo key/push-button "hot" start, 66-67 turn-signal switch) but, except for the 12-volt conversion, the 12-volt wiper motor and 1971-era 1600cc dual-port motor she came with back in 2002, in which I kept in her, the only non-Bus thing I did to her was put in an in-dash Kenwood KDC-X997 Excelon CD/iPod car deck, with a custom-built subwoofer enclosure that fits flush inside of the full-size 15" spare-tire wheel behind the front 2/3 bench seat (I also have one in my New Beetle too for a 10-inch Memphis S-Class subwoofer in the trunk). In 2007, I also had to rebuild both reduction gear boxes and replace the tranny (both for a 1500cc motor) and picked up a 1963 junk Single Cab in nearby Sequim, WA (30 mile drive from here in Port Townsend, WA) for a mere $350.00 and saved a TON of $$$ because all the parts that came with it (that would've cost $$$ more) all worked, the tranny worked (just need lubing and a bit of massaging) and we took the two reduction gear boxes from both it and my Kombi and rebuilt a perfect working set, all at Frank's Automotive here in Port Townsend for only $700.00, and she's been running trouble-free ever since. Any and all oil changes and fluids she needs, she gets.

You need a running start for some hills if you want to get into top gear. And frankly, sometimes a steep enough hill would send you back to third. Hey what have you done to your beetle is it fully stock and what would the top speed be out of it? Im looking at getting one but need to know the top speed etc as it would be a daily driver also are the front drum brakes good in it in the wet? and does the car have a auto choke? Thanks for your help :)
The bug is completely stock right now for the motor, a 1300. I am building a 1600 for it right now. Top speed is maybe 75 MPH going downhill lol When I first bought it in Idaho, I drove it back to Montana and averaged around 65-70 MPH on a flat road. Hills and mountains are where you'll bog down speed wise depending on your motor and trans. When I put the 1600 in I am also putting in a freeway flyer tranny. Yes drums all around on this year. As far as how the brakes are in the wet I honestly couldn't tell you. I don't take it out when it's raining and the couple of times I got stuck in rain while driving it I never had to slam on the breaks. A lot of that will have to do with what tires your running also. Yes on the auto choke, I believe it was 60 or 61 when they added the auto choke to the family. Thanks for posting :) Let me know if you end up getting one! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! ;)
You probably have the 1600 in there by now. The 1300 was from a '66, the stock motor was a 1200 in '63. The '66 is actually my favorite year for bugs, even though it was still 6V. The looks of the '67 were compromised by the front fenders for the sealed beam headlights. I wouldn't kick one out of my garage though!
