CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Navin (Steve Martin), ecstatic about his name being in the phone book, randomly gains a madman stalker as well.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Carl Reiner directs Steve Martin (who co-wrote the script with Carl Gottlieb) in this gag-laden comedy about an idiotic white man, raised by a poor family of black sharecroppers, who doesn't realize he's not black. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) is told the horrible truth when he finds himself instinctively tapping his feet to an easy listening tune on the radio, instead of a low-down blues. His mother (Mabel King) tells him he's white and Navin takes to the road (in a World War II bomber helmet and goggles) to start a new life in St. Louis. A filling station owner, Harry Hartounian (Jackie Mason), give Navin his first break, hiring him to pump gas. One day at the station, Navin has a brainstorm, concocting an invention called "The Opti-grab," a combination handle and nose-brace for eyeglasses. But Navin runs into trouble when a crazed killer (M. Emmet Walsh) picks out his name at random from the telephone book and tries to kill him. Navin escapes to a traveling carnival, where he wrangles a job as the "guess-your-weight" man. At the carnival, he discovers his sexual nature, thanks to stunt rider and S&M enthusiast Patty Bernstein (Catlin Adams). But Navin meets the beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters) and he quickly falls in love. In the meantime, the "Opti-grab" has taken off and soon Navin is a millionaire.

I love how intensely he stares into the camera when he says "Things are going to start happening to me now."
This was Steve Martin's first starring role in a movie, I just realized that line is almost meta, things did start happening to him after that movie (in terms of being a movie star.)
Plus "to me" instead of "for me." :) Careful with the wording Navin.
This is my favorite movie ever! I love this scene! "I'm somebody. Things are going to start happening to me now"!
1:10 : "Random son of a bitch typical run of the mill bastard".
Die gas pumper!
saenz. 1379. - sounds like a typical bastard ^^
Indeed, Saenz! That subtle, deep down, instinctive, need to matter is brought forth. Consider LA story- much funnier somehow.
1979:be somebody!!!!!!!
2019:phone book?
the new phone books are here, the new phone books are here!
I can remember getting my 1st apartment at 19 and feeling that exact same way when I saw my name in the phone book. Of course this was way before social media when times were much simpler.
I'm thinking we're seeing Steve Martin's degree in philosophy coming to the fore. He said it left him with a broadly existentialist perspective on life. I can't think of a more existentialist moment in film comedy. With the exception of every scene in every Marx Brothers film.
What's up, Doc! By your statement, may not have savored Martins' L.A. Story. CZcams a clip and don't be drinking anything you don't want coming out your nose! Ha.
253 1/8 Elm St
Also home to “sh-thead”!
I love Navins excitement for everything in life
"Gas Prices - If you have to ask you can't afford it"
I see that coming back, soon....yup, REALLY soon....
Welp.....it came alright.
This movie really was a true underdog story it had the works love romance fortune comedy laughter sadness it was actually a really wholesome movie in its own right loved it!
Must be a pretty small city if "J" is on page 73 of the phone book.
My God I never realize this and I've seen this movie a hundred times 😂
I watched this filming live in my old neighborhood of Pasadena, CA. Having breakfast at Sambo's and noticed all the lights and activity at the old closed corner gas station next door. Walked over with my brothers in time to see Steve Martin doing 3 takes on the Octi-Grab scene! Unreal. Interesting as movies took at least a year to launch and the forecast gas prices of .99 cents had us blown away.
the new phone book is here!
this is what bill hicks was talking about.
When i was a kid, i also got really proud to see my surname in the phonebook.
The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here! I'm somebody now! Millions of people read this every day! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity, your name in print, that makes people! I'm in print! Things are going to start happening to me now! #LOL
The first dumb and dumber movie
Tennessee Beauty My thoughts exactly, before I read this comment.
Yeah, but 1m times better.
Steve Martin actually was offered to play the role of Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber.
...and then some complete crazy dude with a finger on the phone book....howling insane funny...😃😎😃😎😃😎😃
"HE HATES THESE CANS!"
"He hates these cans"!! It's on here. Clip 7/10 for movie.
Alot and I mean alot of people would say "what's a phone book"
Before I saw this I was this.
Jackie Masons character Mr. Hartoonian is the name of his character in Caddshack 2
Now you get excited seeing your name on Google.
Steve Martin
my favorate
why was it cut off at 1:14???? that was the funniest part and I can't find it anywhere else >:(
Being in print is like in the newspaper. From Joe. X
Lol
I forgot Jackie Mason was in this.
253 1/8 address 😅🤣😂
this really foreshadowed internet fame
Good point Enrico.
0:25 My reaction to any new Call of Duty game
I remember this scene..it was funny
He hates those cans he hates those cans
My affirmation recommendation to all my online stalkers…… say it loud say it proud…I SEE YOU
I used to live in BRD...
Why can't they just post the prices?
Because their competitors will either match them or lower them.
It's comedy...a joke...get it? One day (very soon, unfortunately) we will be asking our phones to tell us the definition of a joke...how sad. The bellowing explosion of laughter, tears running down your well rounded checks, nearly as warm and fuzzy as your first kiss, doesn't offend anyone simple little jokie joke! Ground Control to Major Tom...does anyone out there miss a good joke?
Bundesrepublik Deutschland...."come to Europe" and now I see you know little of it...
God
Jesus
Gut wrenchingly funny- if you liked this movie, consider L.A. Story, a bit more refined- A lonely weatherman gets guidance from a Los Angeles freeway traffic sign how to get a girl. Just as funny as "Jerk" but much deeper. Sarah Jessica Parker is a very young, immature, model.
This movie's dated. Nowadays, people don't use phone books anymore. They just Google it. Plus, they're too expensive to produce.
He hates those cans he hates those cans
