Also worth noting that kick pads absolutely change the sound of the drum's attack. Add in variations of beater head materials (felt, wood, plastic), and size and shape of beater heads, different muffling techniques and materials, and there are too many variations to account for in one video. Might make for some good ideas for more new videos for you guys!
Well I think this comes in fairly handy considering a lot of people are using the kick pads on these heads, and this vid gives you a pretty close approximation of what you're gonna end up with. Since kick heads are so expensive, you almost have to have the protector-pads, to protect your investment! (lol)
@@b.p.879 I agree! Heads are a huge investment. I personally love this video and hope it becomes a whole kick drum series. It's way too expensive to be able to experiment with different sounds using different head/beater/kick pad combinations.
You're absolutely right. There is so much to talk about when it comes to kick drum sound and since those heads got super expensive we hope we an save you some money by simply demonstrating them as natural and realistic as possible.
We also did a video before that's called "Ultimate Bass Drum Sound Guide" where we discussed different kick drum sizes, drumheads, muffling options, beaters etc. Might be worth checking out. Here's the link: czcams.com/video/QFWwD8uH5-Y/video.htmlsi=FRAqJ7RQvV82MRhC
my guy was vibing with that ambassador
One of the best bass drum head comparison videos . THANK YOU!!! :)
5:28 love that sound. It's got that smokey acid jazz trip hop style feel to it.
Nice comparison, great video!
The Powerstroke 3 suits me best.
A zero cost tip - if you want your batter drum head to last longer on your kick, tune it a bit higher than the lowest tuning possible many popular drummers with endorsement do.
Great video. Appreciate the work that went into this!
nice! the SMT clear emperor for me😉
Great comparison and top notch production value as always!! Thanks, Andi! :)
🥳😄
Very helpful, thank you!
Ty! Great demo of the sounds, lots to think about when changing my drumhead out.
the video I‘ve been waiting for 😉
FANTASTIC! THANK YOU!
Great video and explained very well. Makes me want to purchase more than one.
Great comparison video
It wasn't shown here, butI have the Remo Powersonic clear and I love it
Amazing breakdown as always you guys rock! I only wish you included the clear and coated single pinstripe, as I feel that is a great in-between for emperor and powerstroke. Love it.
Great point!
I used to use PinStripes on the bass before the PowerStroke 3 was available.
P3 coated had great punch and more bottom end for me. Currently using a clear P3 on a 24" Ludwig classic maple.
12:33 They look exactly like Evans’ Emad’s! 😊 I really love those on my kick drums. The SMT heads sound a little too dampened in comparison but I might be wrong. They should do exactly the same thing in theory.
Evans sold the rights for the EMAD design to Remo and what I now call the "REMAD" has replaced the Powerstroke Pro series.
Try the GMAD it's a 12mil sounds awesome.
Really good video man. Was curious if it was possible to do an updated Remo drumhead video? I really liked your first Remo drumhead video, but I was wanting to hear you go over more drumheads like you did in the Evans drumhead video. Either way keep up the great videos🤘🏾🤘🏾
The smt emperor was my favorite
content du son avec une bande feutre mais déçu par sa durabilité, j ai maintenant une powerstroke 4 clear , bien plus solide et aussi bon son aussi grave , je veux essayer une pinstripe
Aquariun super kick two all day long for me
A wonderful video for drummers only
8:10 there is also the Powerstroke 3 dot (reverse) and Powerstroke 4 dot (white)
From day one it’s been Aquarian Super Kick 2 and Evans EMAD as a close 2nd. Whichever I’m using, I match it for the reso and usually a wide open kick with no muffling. I tune both batters finger tight then maybe half a turn. Same for the reso except half a turn more. Killer sound. I don’t want my kick sounding fluffy / airy. I want maximum thump. I want my kick sitting lower than the bass guitar as far as frequencies go.
I was surprised i really liked the punch of the SMT coated Emperor. I am a bit out of the ordinary in my kick heads. At least for my main/rock kit i play Attack Orbit (swiss cheese) heads. I don't use any internal muffling. I hate the Controlled sound on a kick every time i hear them. Not sure why. But at low volume the Ambassador coated sounded sweet!! That may be my next head for my jazz kick (currently an Evans Calftone) which I think is pretty similar. But the Remo is probably a little lower priced. Great video. Lets see one like this on Evans.
instead of the ambassador, check out a Remo Skyntone (not Fiberskyn), i love mine for jazz, i have it on the reso and the batter
@@LeakyJAZZ thank you man.
The "the desing might look a little familiar" part at 12:25 feels incomplete without the side eye look monkey puppet meme.
Powerstroke 3 Coated with a Falam Patch
I play pop and ans skatepunk and I usually use a Powerstroke 3 because I like the punch it gives
Does the smt come with 2 rings like the evans version? And how were the bass drumheads tuned on the kick?
hi there. thanks for the comparison video ... whats the actual tunebot frequency used on the lug VS fundamental ?
Great job. No I know that I don't want an SMT, way too dead. Maybe an Emporer coated. I like some tone, and I play classic rock / pop. Thanks
Which is best for a DM type of double kick tone and should a quilt or similar also be used in addition? New to all of this. Thank you
i tried the pre muffled drum heads and they didnt work for me .As soon as i put a Coated Emperor head on with a little muffling the drum came alive the feel was better and the band noticed it right away .So i would never use a pre dampened drum head again ,my opinion stay well
Is there a best option for playing with double pedal?
EMAD for me!
Didn't Remo recently have something similar to the -emad- SMT head, but with four separate quarter-circle felts?
That was the Sub Muffle Ring which I think they discontinued.
Oh, right. Thanks! I guess it doesn't count as a drum head since it's a separate add-on. @@PaulMarangoni
Remo Powersonic
Can you do Evans bass drum heads?
FOR ME PERSONALLY REMO IS THE GREATEST DRUM HEAD NO OTHER SOUND WILL DO I GOO WITH THE CLEAR POWERSTROKE 3 WITH THE 4" INCH FALAM PATCH THAT WORKS FOR ME AT BEST
What was not featured is Remo's fyberskin heads. Just the right amount of dampening (my choice reflector head only). And they look cool. A bit expensive tho.
They also come with a PowerStroke 3 version.
You should do a video on how a drumhead should fit to the shell. I have found remo heads do not fit my Ludwig drums. The only ones I have found that do are Aquarians.
I don‘t know if you‘re aware of that but Remo offers their drum heads in a second version they call “classic fit“. Those are slightly bigger and are made especially for vintage drums that usually have slightly bigger shells
Maybe try those as an option! :)
@@ArtOfDrumming The drums were manufactured in the year 2000. Hardly vintage. I am the original owner. Well cared for drums that are not out of round. The maple classics don't have any kind of outer bearing edge cut. The remo heads are made for a round over bearing edge. So for my kit the head doesn't sit flat because of that. I would imagine if I tried their vintage series they probably wouldn't fit the hoops because my drums aren't vintage. Aquarian fits perfectly, tunes easily and has many offerings for different sounds. I'll be sticking with them. Pun intended. 😂 Peace.
@@goodtimejohnny8972- Aquarian makes GREAT heads.
I've been using an Aquarian Reflector-glossy on my kick for about a year, along with a protector patch, and it sounds really awesome, and goes well with my favorite tom-heads, which are Remo Pinstripe. I'm gonna try a Remo on the kick at next head-change, and I think it'll be the PS4, as it sounds very close to my Reflector-kick sound. Great video as usual!
Would be intresting to se pantera drumsound
I have absolutely no idea how to tune drums but I just put a powerstroke p3 on my bass drum. I threw a pillow in there too. I did watch a few videos on how to tune a bass drum but they left me just as confused as I was beforehand. I think it sounds okay but I'm sure a good drummer would tell me it sounds like crap haha
Maybe check out our bass drum sound guide video
That will answer a lot of your questions 😄
If course check out his video… but one that got me going was Rob Browns tuning guide for toms and kick.
Please recreate Andy Newmark's drum sound! He's done work with Roger Waters, George Harrison, Pink Floyd, John Lennon, and David Bowie!!
Any kick head review that doesn't cover Attack drumheads Orbit kick head is missing out. Best kick head on the planet for harder music for sure. Super solid and heavy. Best tech out there.
Not a hater of the other brands, but Orbit from Attack just obliterates everything else.
Jazz+Blues+Country - batter Ambassador Renaissance/reso Diplomat Fiberskyn, Funk + Drum n' Bass - batter Powerstroke P3 Clear Black Dot/reso Powerstroke P3 Smooth White, Pop+Rock+Latin - batter and reso Powerstroke P3 Clear with felt strip on the reso, Electro - batter Emperor Clear/reso Powerstroke P3 Ebony.
The 1 million dollar question: what is the right thing to do? hit and hold the beater in the drum head, or hit and release?
Release. So much more low end!
Emad or Gmad clear
Very good comparison! But the smt is literally an emad rip off. Imma just stick with evans personally.
If you can't beat them, Evan's EMAD, then join them Smt
Keith Moon.....nobody is simular to Keith Moon ....he is a class of it's own.....my 3 cents
You know,Keith Moon was such an uncontrolled guy,so the controlled sound heads were perfekt for him....just to .....
SMT Coated ambassador sounded good. But we all know they were losing to EMAD so they copied Evans homework 😭
I guess I’m in the minority here, but I wouldn’t use anything thicker than a PS3. The thicker heads will sound dull and lifeless in the mix.
Holy shit. I came here for a drum head comparison and got a 40 minute dissertation explaining shit and not hearing the sound comparison.
Wie kackdreist Remo da abgekupfert hat!? Von denen kam aber auch seit dem P77 nix neues mehr und ihr Coating ist so mies wie eh und je...
Im a remo guy but lets be honest... Aquarian Super Kick 2 and call it a day. 🥱🤪
If only they had the volume...
@@danlc95 I have plenty of volume and beef with Super Kicks. No extra muffling needed.
@@josephmenditto9590 - I'm having a time getting it dialed in just right.
I probably have it too loose.
@@danlc95 I usually put them past finger tight. And then from there you gotta just break it in.
Also check your resonant head. I prefer mine to be tighter than the batter.
Sometimes you just gotta experiment until you find that sound. Every drum is different.
