  • I had the opportunity to interview Donald Robertson on his new book "How to Think Like a Roman Emperor." It is a remarkable mix of history, philosophy and psychology. It would be an extremely useful book for young military leaders.
Book is available here: amzn.to/3RM9RZm (Amazon Associates Program)
I published a full review of the video at: smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art...

It might be dramatic to say this book changed my life, but it's changed my outlook on many things I previously believed I already understood. I've been through it nearly a dozen times, most via audio book during work, and while I thoroughly enjoy it from beginning to end, Chapters 6 and 7 have been invaluable to my daily life. The layout is engaging and provides a humbling glimpse into Marcus's life and practical ways to improve one's self in any lifetime. While Marcus is who I think of during my daily reflections and throughout the day in general, there are many great men who inspired him and all around that provide excellent role models for improving our character in order to live wisely.
Thank you Donald, for your knowledge of such things and willingness and dare I say, desire to help others.
Edit: I should clarify that the chapters I found most useful have been: 6- Relinquishing Fear, and 7- Conquering Anger. That is if I must narrow it down to the areas in greatest need of improvement. As stated, the entire book is special to me for a variety of reasons.

Stoicism leads to psychopathy/sociopathy as it kills emotions & empathy

    • @TheEvolvingWarfighter
      @TheEvolvingWarfighter  Před 4 lety +6

That would be totally incorrect. There is nothing about Stoicism that would lead to the suppression of emotions. Donald Robertson addressed this issue at the 07:30 mark of this interview czcams.com/video/lekHJk-LldQ/video.html&spfreload=10

Ancient Stoics made it clear that emotions are a natural part of life, but it's important to not get carried away in them in ways that remove one's ability to reason. To be empathetic doesn't mean one should match the energy or emotions of those around us, but rather to be in control of our internal faculties so that we may grow productively and reasonably.

Psychopaths are born, sociopaths are made. There is a difference between the two that many people choose to ignore.

@Koyne That is a pretty ridiculous claim. Stoics don't assert that you have "no power to change most of [your] circumstances," they merely teach an individual to focus on the things they can change. There are a lot of rages to riches stories for those that have followed this philosophy.

The Military has some amazing mentors; nothing is perfect... I assume the interviewer has never served in the Military so he has no idea what he is talking about on that subject.

Why is it that you think something that so what many have experienced, can only be understood by those who have experienced it first hand?
I have only found a few things that can only be understood by experiencing it first hand....
The military is not one of them. Because people who experience it are always sharing their experiences...There are books, historical documentation etc etc..
So in order for what you say to be rue, then the of sharing experiences or even education is without value.
Your statement ...negates the values of many things....Even that which you speak of..
I always thought the military taught people to be mindful of what they think and say...And to think before saying.
Hmmm,....Maybe military training is not that valuable after all...
      Or perhaps you are mistaken?
I will let you make that statement.....And hopefully this time you will use all of your training before doing so.
