    ℹ️About the episode:
It was a pretty uneventful day when we left Elkhart, IN and started making our way to Pentwater, MI for Camp KYD. As a result, the GoPro’s were not mounted to the windshield like usual. When we rolled up to a telephone line blocking the road, there was no time to get the action cams set up to record. The only way around the telephone line was through an abandoned market parking lot and we were unable to get around a telephone pole. Needing to back out due to unlevel ground, a well-intentioned stranger came to help… “You’ll be fine, keep coming”. I’m glad we didn’t listen to him! Trish told me to stop and I did. Continue to back would have ripped off one of our hydraulic stabilizers.
What we do have on camera is the next guy “helping” by providing unclear hand gestures. Trish was on the phone via Bluetooth and we were both ignoring him. Overall, this was a great reminder that when things go wrong, everyone wants to help, but not everyone is equipped to do so and no one wants to take responsibility for providing wrong instructions. The next time you’re in a “situation” here are three things to remember:
    1) Stop and assess the satiation completely
    2) Remind yourself that you’re not in a hurry
    3) Communicate your plan clearly and let your spotter know what to say and when to say it.

One of the things we insisted on many years ago: NOBODY helps move the rig unless they have full financial responsibility. No exceptions. And you’re spot-on: somebody trying to “help” will just say, “oh, sorry about that” and you’ll still have to get any damages sorted yourself.

My answer is twofold. First, I challenge you research history to find the answers to your question. Either we learn from history or we are doomed to repeat it.
Second, our strong military protects this country, our allies, and even our enemies from world war 3, or anything like it.
Look back to the basic ideal that founded this country...citizens wanting representation (a say) in what taxes they were required to pay to a money hungry king.
Look back at Hitler and the power he gained in his own country and then attempted to expand through Europe.
PS- If we lived in some of the dictator run countries that exist we would have limited access to the internet, if any, and possibly no opportunity to see anything on YT. Don't take freedom for granted. Our military protects it for you too.

Our boys grew up with us doing a lot of tent camping in the southwest. They are both merchant sailors now and leave their families on a regular basis. The same thing happened to us! A dump truck took out a wire and we did not see it and drove on as all these other vehicles were pulled along the side of the road. We snagged the wire on or AC unit and dislodged it. Everyone was yelling at us not to get out of the RV for fear of getting electrocuted. Turns out it was a phone line and it was taken off the top safely and we drove on but had to find a place that could do an emergency fix, re-seating the AC with new bolts. The old ones were bent pretty badly and we could see the sky through the roof. We got it done and moved on down the road.

My husband and I are learning this. We were driving to Gettysburg and got detoured into a small town. I am still not entirely comfortable with all, the sounds of towing but heard a weird tapping thudding noise. I told my husband but he thought it was just the road. Remembering our agreement, “if either of us feels like somethings not right, we pull over to check” he pulled over. After the both of us checking around the rig and not finding anything we started to get back in and that’s when we heard it- the loud hiss of air escaping! We had run over a 3/4” lag bolt that rammed its way into our truck tire. 😣 We were able to change the tire and get back on the road. But listening to each other and trusting each other has been crucial!

We always went camping the rough way. No services, just you, a tent and sleeping bag and of course a chuck box. Yes, those who recognize the term can guess right, I am an Eagle Scout. KYD!

You are exactly right about military families that don't get enough credit. It is a hard lifestyle and we should be supporting them much more than we do. Kudos to the families that make the most of it and raise their children with love. They sacrifice everything for our country. Thank you for speaking about that. Made me cry but still , thank you.

Ha something similar happened to my husband and I while leaving a campground; actually our first RV trip. He was driving, I was outside directing. I knew he couldn't make the turn and had him back up. Tried again, just not enough room. Two guys came over and tried to help telling him to keep going he was fine and when I spoke up one shouted at me, "Who is doing the directing here?" and then continued to tell him to go. I shouted so loudly for him to stop because had he gone forward he would have ripped off the back left side of the RV. We ended up having to back it all the way out. Thanks for all of your help and advice and great videos. You're so much fun and such a great resource as well.

What you do is install "Tubes" from front to back just a little higher than the highest point on your roof. Like a luggage rack but without the inside support . Any wire will slide right over the Air, TV antenna etc.

I can appreciate what you went through getting hung up on the electrical wires. I started driving a semi log truck when I was 18. I obviously lacked any experience back then and I got hung up on wires twice in one week. Fortunately they were in 2 different states but watching clearance is pretty much ingrained now.

You guys make me feel so welcomed in your lives, I feel like I am there visiting with each video I see (I’ve been binge watching for 3 weeks now lol 😂)! Y’all’s videos got me to get myself a trailer and hit the road after 15 years from the last time I RVd. I purchased the RV after following your advice and not settling on a trailer, but getting the floor plan and even the color scheme inside. Thank you for all you do to inform and entertain! I am excited to try being a KYD Insider soon and start new adventures, travel new paths, create memories along our journey. G-d bless and safe travels!

Just found ya'll (RV NEWBIE: ✅ SETUP CHECKLIST (KYD)) and have been binge- watching! We are still in the prepping phase, but we're making a "plan" and I'm trying to learn as much as I can during this planning/prepping phase. I know we'll experience the "joy" of making our own mistakes along the way, but I believe finding you will make the transition to full-time 5th-wheel life so much easier. Thank you! We'll be sure to shop at your Amazon store to show our support. And Trish, HOW do you stay so fit?? You look fantastic! At 54, I struggle with staying "young". But hey, with a 13 yo son and adventurous spirits, it's one of the reasons we're planning to embark on this journey. We (my hubby & I) are just to young to feel old!!!

I drive Prevost tour buses for celebrities for the last 20 years. I have CDL A. You might want to add a wireless camera on the very front looking forward and to the rear of your 5th wheel. We have them on the buses and it works great for the questionable moments.

My daughter is married to a military pilot. USAF. He’s been deployed overseas for a year! But she has made sure her daughter (my granddaughter) has not missed a thing! They bought a pony and a horse trailer and they’ve loaded up the dog and are traveling to horse shows! Camping along the way! Our military families give up a LOT and it’s really hard. But our family sees those opportunities as blessings!

As a trucker Mark we are taught to GOAL. Get out and look. Like you said, so many drivers dont realize you are both low and high. I've been backed into a build because a manager at a Kroger store never looked at my 13'6. He just looked at my side view. I learned that lesson 20 years ago.

  • @KevinBenecke
    @KevinBenecke Před 4 lety

If I may make a suggestion, you should come up with some type of telescopic locking pole, put a heavy rubber insulated grip on it and a V notch on the other end that you can use if you encounter a low line or wire so you can use it to try and push the wire up to try and help you clear it. you can also purchase a pair of insulated gloves for additional protection from a power line. Here's one thing to keep in mind though. In most cases the power lines are going to be the ones all the way at the top of the pole. The lower ones, the ones you are most likely to get caught on, are usually either phone lines or cable lines (as in cable TV.) They won't bite you. You can look at the line and see where they lead. If it leads to a transformer on a pole, it's most likely a power line. But that's why I suggest putting a heavy non-conductive rubber grip on the pole and getting heavy duty non-conductive gloves in case you have to deal with those too. And another thing to do is put side rails along the length of both sides of the roof that are higher than the highest object on the roof of the trailer. Then you could use the pole if needed to lift the wire and let it lay on the rails and it would safely slide along the rails and drop off of the back. I used to drive 18 wheelers years ago. I had such a pole for this reason. The only difference is those trailers don't usually have all of the stuff on the roof like your camper does.

Totally agree on not paying attention to other "helpers". I only listen to my wife for giving me guidance. She is much more knowledgeable about our rig than even other RVers. For what it's worth, we also use FRS radios instead of phones to communicate. In many places we stop there may not be usable cell service and we find the radios quicker to "connect" and just better to use. I also prefer to always use the same method so it is more habit and so we don't use the phones even if there is service.
