I was there in 1998 when it was not as overrun with tourist like today but that's is good for the Greek economy. Being half Greek I can't say I was not attracted to the scenery but for Greeks abroad it's also about heritage, history, culture, and family, almost half my family is in Greece. I stayed in a hotel below the Caldera cliffs since it was cheaper and a 1956 earthquake killed a lot of Greeks prior to it becoming a tourist trap. Thera is still an active volcano and has been upgraded to the status of a super volcano but another earthquake is much more likely than an eruption, I lived through a big earthquake. I still highly recommended it since natural disasters can happen anywhere. Akrotiri an ancient Bronze Age city buried in the ash of the last eruption 1600 BC is worth visiting.
