    A couple disclaimers:
    1. Although I was only there for 1 month, I say, "lived in Mexico" because I had the option to (and originally planned) to be there for 7 months or more. I think the experience that I had pretty much represented what it would have been like for me no matter how long I would've stayed for.
    2. I don’t want to make it all about me; my two friends and I all had very interesting & attention-filled experiences there, but I can only speak for myself (a black girl) and the interactions I had personally. It’s not to say that if you are some other race that you won’t experience something very similar (& I’m pretty sure my Asian American friend did).
    3. Some of this may seem extreme or exaggerated but I cannot make any of this up lol! I even have footage of some of the many interactions I had. Bottom line is: if you go and you’re black, especially if you don't appear to be some random beach-goer, you WILL draw some type of attention, & people will want to interact with you very often.
    4. I stayed in a touristy area (Puerto Vallarta), so I HIGHLY doubt I was the first Black person anyone had ever seen. But I was living there as if I was… living there… not like a tourist. So I wasn’t trapped on a resort, I was commuting like, grocery shopping like, and interacting with everyday Mexican people. Like 98% of the interactions I had (outside of my class/roommates) were with Mexican people/non-tourists.
    Things people asked/ talked about:
    my ethnicity/background
    my looks
what I was doing in Mexico
    my hair
    how I know Spanish
    my muscles
    boyfriends 🙄 lol

I really never expected this video to become so popular and for so many people to see it. It was one of my first videos and I only had like 60 subscribers when I first posted it lol. So if you're wondering why I approached the video with this certain narrative, or stressed certain things, it was because this video was meant for a very specific (and smaller) audience and at the time I was really only expecting close family and friends to see it. But even a year later so many people are still watching it and everyone is so nice in the comments 💕 I really do appreciate it all, and everyone who has subscribed! :) I think you all are so sweet, men and women. This is why I love Mexico in the first place hahah ❤️

I lived in Chiapas México off and on for over 9 years.
The first year was the hardest because people stared constantly. I always became defensive, but finally realized they were starting at me because many had never seen a black American.
I now live 3 hours from Mexican border in San Antonio. I constantly miss Mexico, the friends I made, the food, and the diverse beauty.

Blanca Tobon oh stop it! I take it an insult that you’d take my PERSONAL OPINION as an insult lol.
I lived in Mexico almost 10 years and visited almost all the states of the Republic at least once. I also lived in Chetumal, Zacatecas, Saltillo, Chihuahua, and Texacoco. Spent ridiculous amounts of time in Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, and of course Nuevo León.
If I say in my opinion Chiapas is the hidden jewel of the nation I have a damn right to say so.
People visit the USA and declare NY or San Francisco as cultural jewels of our nation, we know there are many other cities that can hold those distinctions, but we don’t take it as an insult, just stop the silly lol lol

I’ve seen many videos of black’s experiences in Mexico, and let me offer a word of advice to you guys.
DO NOT bring your American experiences with you, and think that we are going to treat you the same way. Put your guard down. Be who you want to be, lower your weapons.
We will definitely stare at you. We will definitely make comments. We may even point. But do NOT misunderstand this with your experiences that you’ve had growing up in America.
We have never seen someone like you, and all this staring/commenting is because of curiosity. You are new to us. In Mexico we have just about every race imaginable, except for black. There are black Mexicans, but most Mexicans have never met them.
We are not being racist. If anything, we DO think you’re beautiful. We admire your skin tone. (It’s gorgeous!), those smiles (they make our hearts flutter!). We are admiring a beauty that Mexicans rarely get to see.
So anyways, American blacks. Sorry that America has hardened you and you’ve developed a defense mechanism against the incredible racism you experience, but you won’t experience this in Mexico. We love you guys! We respect you! You are our equals.

My experience in the US is a little bit different, i once to stood next to a black girl in a line and smiled at her and all I got was a nasty look. I was worried she thought I didint meant well. it scared me. Truly. Don’t know why my comment turned so blue haha, but kudos to you and share more about your fun experiences in Mexico !🇲🇽 ❤️

Well most of them were integrated and mixed with mestizos (mixed mexicans) and native mexicans, the black were never take apart, they were accepted as mexicans, as equals, even the second president of Mexico Vicente Guerrero was an afromexican and nobody cares that because the origin in Mexico never has been important, today there are a very small black comunities that are not much mixed but the reason was only that were very very far and inaccessible at the time, but not now.

OK, most of those were not proper marriages but they did it anyway. I know now you have a tiny community of Haitians close to the U.S. border: good for you, I read these Haitians are hard workers and some of them even have a degree (teachers, technicians), they are very happy with the opportunity of working in Mexico, sending money to their families in Haiti and grateful for the interactions with Mexicans there as they are not discriminated: people even started buying typical cuisine dishes at their tiny sales booths.

      Saludos.

I'm a 66 year old black woman with a curly afro and skin about your skin's color, and this year, I've spent 2 weeks in Merida. A man came up to me in the drug store and politely kissed my hand and said how delighted he was to see a lovely black woman in Merida. Other Mexicans complimented me on my hair. Most of the time I was with my partner, who's a white guy with silver hair. No one stared at us. Unlike in the South where we live in the US, before entering an eatery or bar, we didn't have to worry about whether it would be safe. I didn't have to fear the police. We are thinking of retiring to Mexico, and I think that living there would be far less stressful for me than living in the U.S.

"morenita or morena" is a common word used in Mexico. They'll call you like that just because your skin is not white. You know that because of the miscegenation our skin is not pure black, pure white... We are "multicolored" and we are used to be called like that everywhere in my country... Men are so flirtatious that every woman who catches their eye will be "tch-tch" so, for obvious reasons, they were attracted to you, your face is beautiful, your skin is gorgeous and your smile is incredible, have you seen how you close your eyes when you smile? I'm black too and have been to Mexico and Colombia. I'm more like Rihanna's complexion but have a big afro. My lighter complexion still has resulted in a lot of racist experiences here in the US and I didn't feel as welcome in Spain either which has always made me anxious upon travel. I experienced a whoooole lot of staring in Latin America but I never felt uncomfortable in either countries because every single person I interacted with was so warm, generous, and hospitable (a few were not but those people just seemed very busy in the city rushing somewhere- not UN-friendly). Loooots of flirting in Mexico haha. These guys apparently were asking people in my company of they could dance with me - it was funny because I barely knew them. Highly recommend any Black person to travel to either country- don't hesitate! I definitely felt more human in both than I have often in my own country which is really sad. While traveling through the country side of Colombia we stopped to ask directions at this family's house and ended up staying all day as they took us in, fed us, showed us around. You can never get that in the US. ❤️🇲🇽🇨🇴❤️
