Cheap Moving Head Lights - learning DMX

  • Tomshine, U'king and Lixada moving head gobo lights, 4 tomshine mini beams, 2 Lixada moving head pars, 4 generic 3 LED pars, a generic RGB laser and a 30 channel controller for RGB LED strips...
I tried different brands of the gobo lights just to see if they did anything differently with otherwise identical lights. The answer is yes...yes they did. The DMX channels are set up in very different orders.
I was avoiding the mini beams because I strongly dislike the projected beams being separate for each diode (the RGBW appear in separate squares). I decided to get a set since they were cheaper than usual and I want to try putting a diffuser in front of the actual diodes to fill the reflector and get an even-colored beam.

Thank you for the kind words! I have to be honest here...I'm kinda excited to see you commenting on my crappy little videos! I had often watched your content and thought "that looks like fun" until one day I started purchasing lights. :)

Oh, the camera killing laser? I got that on Amazon somewhere...it had a really weird name. I'd recommend one that's a little more expensive because the scanning lines on a wide pattern look kinda crap. Sumger "professional (lol...mk) RGB. If you go looking for it, make sure you snag the RGB as there's an RG model that'll only do red green and yellow.

    • @94XJ

One in the middle is a Tomshine something or other that I saw on ebay dirt cheap. The other two are Lixada fixtures...mini gobo 30w something somethings. The Tomshine unit has a bunch of gobos unlike the other fixtures that I'm not a fan of but that's also relatively easy to swap out.

If I were starting over, first thing I'd do is start with SoundSwitch and a compatible adapter - preferably with 2 universes but the latter isn't necessary.
2nd - buy matching lights. My first 2 gobo lights are a couple years older than the rest and are different from the number of DMX channels to the color wheel order and even the speed the heads move. I'd probably go for the lights I found that have an LED wash and the gobo light in the middle. Same gobo patterns, same colors but also the same functions as the two 7-LED wash lights I have. A few of those and then a couple more expensive lights with moving prisms would be good.
I wouldn't get these beam lights again. I knew they didn't blend the light colors when I bought them and its even why I avoided them for a while...but they were so cheap I went for it. If you're doing anything other than just R, G, B or W you get 2 beams instead of a blended color. What I didn't know is that their rotation speed sucks and also kinda messes up some of what I'd like to do. Look for lights with a little reflector in the middle that blends the different colors and makes a single, uniform beam instead (unless you're okay with them being like this...you can see i kinda use the part I dislike to show 2 beams in white and green in the vid).
I could go on with everything I'd like to change and am planning to change but I'm not sure where you're looking to start. Definitely skip the AmericanDJ MyDMX buddy, though. Its the same as the generic ones you could get on eBay or the Wish app but more expensive and not compatible with a couple programs I would have liked to use.

@@94XJ thank you very much for your answer. Was really helpful, but could I get your mail address or whatsapp? I still have some questions. I guess different lights and software match different environments, places or needs. I'd love to share with you my plan and ideas, and to learn some tips from you. Hope to hear from you. Have a good day :)

@@djleo2247 if you want to have a uniform round spot, you want to have a something round and uniform light emitting in the focal point of the lens / lens array. In your case, I think you have the LED right on the focal point. I think a small convex lens in the focal point could work, but you would have to move the Emitter further back. If the emitter has a dome, you might get away by roughing it up a little, but you would also loose a bit of light.
