  • My recent trip back to Parris Island, SC to see my friend's son graduate from boot camp, I learned that the old 3rd Battalion barracks were empty, and slated to be torn down. With permission, I was able to go to the hallowed ground, where I and so many others were trained to be Marines. This is my journey.

A much more realistic idea of the squad bays is if the camera-person stood on line for three months---holding the camera the entire time and every time they got tired and started to drop it, it would be "Up! Up! Keep those arms up!"

As a former DI (2ndBn), I want to thank you for this video. You do a great job of bringing back my personal memories of training recruits for 2.5 years. As an older man of 50, I sometimes can't believe I did that, the "blood, sweat and tears" as you describe was dropped from both the recruits and Drill Instructors. Semper Fi.

Jesus Christ man, this was the best return to the turning point of my life i could ever have hoped for. I remember so vividly the barracks that you just showed. To add to the memories i can never smell Pine Sol without thinking about those Sundays with the hose. You said towels, but when i went through in 1990 it was scuz brushes. It's so weird to me that i would give anything to go back to that 3 months of classes, PT and relive them. Supposed to be the most difficult period in a young man's life and it was. But i would do it again in a heartbeat right now if i could. Best time of my life, made me the man i am today.

We had the scuzz brushes, too--it was the first thing you grabbed in the morning--ghost turds were immediately eradicated--after your money-valuables bag was checked, out came the scuzz brushes--nowadays I have a debit card for all my riches, but when I go to buy something, some banker in New Jersey has my money-valuables bag because the card doesn't always work.

Update on the status of the teardown....I recently visited PI (July 2015) and took a drive down to the old 3rd Btn. barracks. Heard they were to be torn down some years ago, but to my surprise.... Most of the barracks are still standing. India Co. barracks have been reduced to rubble, but Hotel, Gulf and the Chow hall are still standing. Weeds are growing up through cracks in the parade deck the place looked in sad shape. it brought back many memories to come back to the island. I can still hear the sounds of the drill instructors in my head. Thanks for the video it will preserve many memories for the the thousands of Marines that passed through those doors.. This is good stuff, I don't know how I stumbled upon it. Just for kicks, an old school mate that I went in to the Corps with on the 'buddy system' decided to attend a graduation of a distant family member and we had heard the 3rd had been reduced to rubble. This was several years after this video, but the barracks were still standing, the condition terrible. Ghosts of Marines Past describes it perfectly. At the time, PI was running recruits thru the program like tic-tacs, 110 TURDS (Trainees Under Rigid Discipline) on each floor. We walked thru and took a few videos, along with the obligatory 'standing on the yellow foot steps' at receiving. I'd be lying if I said the walk-thru wasn't emotional ... this was a demarcation point for a lot of young men's lives. Little did we know. My four years was fruitful and I didn't experience the horrors of the 'Nam like so many of my fellow Marines. Being plucked off the plane when it landed on Okinawa on the way to WestPac, I spent my last year in as REMF assigned to 3rd FSR on Okinawa. My heart goes out to those that experienced the war, the killed, the wounded, and those that would never be the same again.

I arrived on PI Jan 17, 1962. Assigned to Plt 304, R Co. Many things have changed in my barracks (aside from them being torn down). The decks were painted red, scrubbed and waxed every field day. There were no lines on the deck anywhere in the barracks. The squad bay lighting fixtures were different. There were no stalls in the head. There was no "pound board;" you slapped the painted cinder-block bulkhead. There were long wash-racks & clothes lines between the barracks and sidewalk on the port side. Watching this video was somewhat like the beginning of the movie, "Twelve O'clock High:" The admin officer returns to the site of his old airbase in England, and the the remembrances begin flooding back. I was released from active duty in May, 1966. I still have my 304 Platoon Book, but it is falling apart because I page through it often. I'm delighted that you took the trouble to make this vid. Hey J.
Thanks for preserving some of my history, I’ve watched all 3 videos you’ve posted. 👍 👍
Your 1st Phase Barrack was my barrack after Platoon 3037 picked me up, and that’s where we graduated from. I was a med. re-cycle - foot injury, 3week set back.
Series 3036, Plt. 3037, Grad. 9May1977, SDI SSgt J.N. Moch, we were in squad bay on the second floor of this barrack. We would hump to the Rifle range every morning, when we had rifle qualification, and humped everywhere else. Mess duty at 1st Bn. Chow Hall, humped over there every morn too.
Your graduation date was 10 years later, minus 16 day after I enlisted, still in High School. Then reported and took the oath that doesn’t expire on 31Jan.1977, the old wooden receiving barrack is all gone too, stood up all night long, reading the little signs “Instructions” on how to speak.
Deep memories, would not change them for anything.

"Cold" is how I went in--no weight-lifting, no running--no idea about Beirut, either, which wasn't that long ago--I ran some laps around our high school track and that was it--no prep., no DEP, partied until the last second--I knew something about Lech Walesa and Ronald Reagan beforehand--but not much about either--and then I went.

I graduated MCRD SanDiego Platoon 3090 on November 30, 1984. I went back about a year and a half later to visit a friend from high school on visitor's Sunday. Then I didn't return for 32 years until December of 2018 when I went with a friend to watch his son graduate. The friend was also with me in Platoon 3090 and we went to the same school (ITS now SOI) and got stationed at the same place (Los Flores, Camp Pendleton) so it was really a trip down memory lane. I liked what you said about there being a lot of "ghost" walking around there. That's what it felt like to me as I stood where I'd become a marine so many years earlier. Great video.

Heavy was Sgt Panikowski, Sgt Slapowski, Sgt Galliger then later, Sgt Slapowski left, and Sgt Clyde Fraizer came over from another plt in our series. I was a Drill Instructor class 1-84 Jan 84 to Jan 86, 3rd Bn H Co. Damn, as time passes, so does events. I'm thankful to have served and retired as a Master Sergeant in 2001, and the challenge to train recruits, and have a successful tour as a DI. Many Di's were voided, got NJP and court martialed for hazing and maltreatment of recruits. Very sad that 3rd Bn is not the same however, even back when I was a "Hat," there was scuttlebutt that 3rd Bn might be relocated/closed.. The Marine Corps made all the difference in my life because the alternative for me was in and out of prison, a underachiever/loser... I'm 61 and I thank God I made it this far!!! In February 1976 I entered the front door of these barracks not only to become a United States Marine but to also become a man who learned what team work was. I remember the hate we had for our drill instructors after doing many push-ups in the red ant pits on that smelly nasty Island. I never knew what a sand flea was until I walked on this island. We could not wait to graduate and the feeling we had when we entered a new phase in training. The lower the floor the less time we had. I never thought on graduation day I found it hard leaving the front gates without my 3014 Platoon buddies. I thank those DI’s from the bottom of my heart for the time you harassed the sh** out of us. You made men out of all of us and I’m sure most of us feel the same way. I still talk to and meet up with some of my Plt. 3014 brothers. Graduation day was and is the proudest day of my life. I get choked up looking at these barracks and hear a whisper of someone yelling “get the hell up you maggots, your slower then old people fu**. Smokers, draw two and get the hell outside.” It’s sad to see these old walls empty. My only question is where is the cleanest garbage can on the planet. I had 4 cans of Brasso on that bad boy. Simper-Fi and God bless our United States Marine Corps.

We occasionally went to other, "better" chow halls on Lejeune--because we'd kill for a salad bar--there wasn't one in our chow hall--we'd jump into someone's GM product to go to another chow hall on base once we (somehow) learned POG's had nicer shit to eat (this back when I could eat 60 lbs. of food plus the salad bar, peacefully digesting it all as we did even stupider things later that same day--try that now and my system says "Wait--after we process all you just put into me, then you can do dumb shit--but it's going to take awhile, plus the noises and discomfort--thanks to you being a pig"). Who knows if other "03's" thought we were putting on airs by leaving the grunt chow hall behind--nor were any of the ranch-dressing-and-bacon-bits-loving pogues snooty on account of our presence in their chow hall.

I just learned that these barracks will be torn down, wow! Big memories !!!
I spent 3 months there in 1972 platoon 3007 and came very close to dying on the 3rd floor after the DI made us crawl with our head down through ammonia poured on the floor and all the way to the showers and in the shower with the hot water running.
I got up at the door way but the DI knocked me down cause I wasn't in the center of the door way, I could no longer breath , my breath had stopped.
I got up and brought the DI down to the ground then stood up and ran around the sinks and toilets they were on opposite sides of the wall then stopping at the sink trying to get water but couldn't. Realizing there was a water fossett out side the bathroom door I got water in my month I tilted my head back, as the water went down a large amount of air came out my month then I could breath.
That was a scary time cause I came close to dying. I actually went into the shower like the rest of us so the DI would do anything to me. No one said a word !
Thank you for this video, I thought I'd never see this place again after 46 years here it is wow!

    • @alexanderwalle3568

As far as I recall, the head was about the size of the bathroom in the men's dorm of Bailey Hall, UNC-Greensboro but with a poop-slinger in Bailey who somehow never got caught launching dookie all over the bathroom--shop-lifting I could get away with--and I have, at The Dollar General recently when I noticed $2 someone apparently dropped ahead of me in line--I snatched the money right in front of the cashier so fast they didn't even notice, despite being right there--I also used to nix liquor in bars--if the bartender turned, I'd have a bottle from behind the counter before they knew it--they didn't know it, actually--that's the point of being keen--and because it's all about class, me and the crew would leave to chug my latest accomplishment in some alley nearby (it was once nothing but grenadine--serving us right). While I'm probably not that fast anymore--I also have legal concerns I didn't know about then--there's no way I'd be lucky enough to sling a turd without someone knowing--and who would want to..? I'd rather be busted for grenadine.
