Watch This Cargo Ship Fly a Giant Kite to Save Fuel and Cut Emissions - Airseas Seawing

  • Airseas Seawing was officially deployed for the first time, flying at 200 meters above sea level. Airseas engineers were onboard, to collect data from this pioneering test. The success of this initial operation meant the validation of essential processes, such as folding and unfolding the kite, and flight in altitude.

    For those who think this is just a sailing ship. Little difference. (or big from an engineering perspective). The sail is 650feet high where the winds are 3 times faster than surface wind. This came out of kite surfing.

      of course its scalable, if you can make a boat you can make the sail that goes with it. now efficiency wise I have no fecking clue. I wouldn't take the company's word for it. But I guess you have no clue either otherwise you'd cite a proper source

      @rydenkaye9735 Před rokem +4

      no. kite's provide a ton of advantages over conventional sails, from more power, less drag, less rigging requirements, stows more compactly, operates higher and further from turbulent air caused by the ship, and a ton of other benefits.

    • @h8GW

      Kites seem to be the better option for consistent trade winds. They don't clutter up the deck and the winds are stronger higher up.

      @moonie5565 Před rokem +2

      So how exactly do you adjust a kite when the wind blows a different direction?
      You can adjust sails but kites kinda just go wherever their blown

    • @MichaelMantion
      @MichaelMantion Před rokem +1

      @@moonie5565 The computer controls the movement of the kite. In general higher winds don't change direction as much, so kites would likely go even higher to catch stronger more stable winds. The kites are only intended to use less diesel when winds are optimal. I would assume there is a narrow range of wind direction when the kite would be used. They worked on this before the Obama global recession. Since then oil prices have been so low it wasn't worth researching. Now that Biden has driven global oil prices higher to reduce their use, these technologies may have promise again.

      @Steve-uv1tg Před rokem +1

      @@moonie5565 I don't think it's meant to be used in a headwind, lol. But if the wind is blowing in the general direction you're going anyway, why not harness it? I suspect that the 20% claim assumes optimal tailwind conditions, and the average actual fuel savings would be a lot lower. But if the savings still justify the expense, why not let the wind do the work?
