I have one of the leather water bottles and I have fallen on it. This cracked the beeswax sealant on the inside and started to leak after that. Resealed it by pouring melted beeswax inside. Easy fix. I also left it in my car in hot weather a few times and it warped it and I had to reseal it again.

For the costrels/leather water bottles, seal the wooden stopper with beeswax. You can get a much better seal that way, and it's perfectly safe to drink out of. You can kinda taste the wax, but it's not nasty, just odd. If you don't use a costrel for a few months, fill it with water and let it sit for a few hours, with the stopper in, to keep the leather from dying out, shrinking or cracking.
Be sure to let it dry properly afterwards to prevent it from going gross.
Waterskins are neat. If you can, get one with a modern bladder in it since it's easier to clean and less likely to leak. They're pretty much a Camelbak bladder with a leather bag around it.

Let's be honest though you can't go wrong with your trusty vault 13 canteen

12:09 Could you reseal that bottle with more acrylic sealer to keep the stain from coming off?

I bought a small leather flask very similar to the one in the video and used it once and found out it leaks. I guess they used some type of resin or something that hardens up. I don't believe it's bee's wax. Would you happen to know how to fix something like that? It's just a small leak by the way.

mike D I’m not sure about resin. All the ones I’ve seen are wax. Many also stop leaking once they are thoroughly wet. As the leather swells and seals up.

@@fellandfair thanks I appreciate the feed back man. I really enjoy your channel I hope you continue to make good quality videos. I've been going to renaissance fairs for about 25 years now but just recently got more involved with creating and making some of my costumes in the last 4 years or so. I wasted lots of time but now I wouldn't change it for the world. Maybe I'll just continue to fill it with water until it stops leaking. I thought about maybe putting some type of rubberized glue or epoxy but it might leak chemicals or something into my water. What do you recommend I do?

@@miked4152 Honestly I have very little experience with actually making these. I would definitely not use anything synthetic. Melted paraffin or beeswax is probably your best bet.
