  • Another list of things that your house (and mine) truly don't need! You might not agree with all of them - but perhaps something I mention will make you stop and think a bit more critically about others!

      Notebooks... we have several partially used school notebooks. In Sep/23, I finally realized this is a problem! I asked my grade 11 daughter to continue using them this school year.
      Unfortunately, we still have too many, as this is our last child in school. So...long story short, I've started using them for scrap paper, meal planning, etc. And if that wasn't silly enough, I asked her to only use loose leaf paper the school year before that. We still have pages and pages to use up. 🤪

    I agree with most of the things you listed, except the books. I love my books. They are the main attraction of our family room, displayed in beautiful built-in bookshelves that my son-in-law built for me. I often re-read books, and my friends and I lend each other books on a regular basis. As a result, my children are also avid readers and collect books, too.

    As usual, a spot on video Angela. #11 particularly resonated w me as I had to leave my beloved teaching career of over 30 years due to a health disability in 2022. I had curated a special collection of over 2000 children’s books as well as storytelling materials. Just last night I pulled the final pieces of my career from the shelves to donate to a school who can use them. It was painful, but there is a peaceful freedom of passing on a legacy of literature love to others, although my own chapter has closed.

    Normally when I get rid of or replace appliances I take them to Goodwill. I always look to see if I still have the manual and it so put it in a ziplock bag that I tape to the appliance. Ha ha, you are obviousely not the same kind of reader as I am! I reread a lot if my books often, they are like old friends that I visit with. If a book isn't so good that I want to reread it it's hardly worth reading the first time. Having said that, I have decluttered a lot of books, those I found in thrift stores that I thought I might read but never did and some I didn't like enough. Now I mostly stick to authors I know I love or read books I've bought for free on kindle or gotten as ARCs. Keep quite a strict rule on physical books I buy.

    About books: Books are far more than "entertainment". They are sources of knowledge and wisdom. We recently gave away about ¾ of our books, in anticipation of a move, possibly out of country. Of the 300 or so that remain, they are mostly essential. Most are non-fiction. The rest could be classified as 'literature'. My feeling is that being 'bookish' is still pejorative. Of course, I read maths and science books for entertainment, as well as mastering a different way to look at the universe.

    So well done! I like it. I really get what you mean with books on the shelves. In my home I made me a library room and I love it so much. It is deeply calming and every book has enough space. I do not like it if they are squeezed in the shelves. But with enough space in it I love it.Lots of empty book shelves would ruin that calm feeling and the beautiful impression what a libary has to offer. You are totally right: I do not revisit them very often and I do not read them again (not all of them) but I only have books in it I love having it.And that is totally what you said: if it has a purpose for you and you love it - great! do it. Maybe it is for this season of my life and in another season I would not want to have it any longer. I guess the point is to listen to your own heart but never let things in your house which burdens you. Thanks and lovely regards from Vienna/Austria! :)

    People often hang onto books (and magazines) but the issue there is, if you have racks and shelves of them *when* will they all, if any of them save for one or two, be read again (except for maybe the kids, who haven’t read them and only if it’s an interesting read for young adults/children.)
    Nah…donate books that just keep collecting dust and silverfish etc. You don’t need musty reminders of your distant past in the form of sagging, creaky shelves.

      I do Libby with most fiction and self-help, often in the form of an audiobook that I can listen to on commutes or on breaks. If a book is useful for reference (gardening, for example), I'll hold onto it. I have a collection of old Hollywood biographies that are out of print, and a few beloved books from childhood. It's still quite a lot, but it pares down what really could end up in the house of a sentimental, life-long reader. 😂

    Great video, my only thing would be the toilet brush. I agree with you germ wise however, there is nothing worse than someone using the toilet & needing to clean it immediately after & there is nothing there for them to do so before leaving the bathroom. It can be embarrassing especially if it is a guest in our home. They wouldn't want to leave it for me to clean or for the next person to see & too embarrassing to expect them to come to me & ask for cleaning supplies!

Each person is responsible for putting his/her dirty laundry in either the white basket for items that are light colored or in in the blue basket for items that are dark. I did the math based on average fam of 4. Lol. It would take them approx 205 years to use them all (if they all used 1/4 each one item per day lol. Although we use more than one thing a day I suppose. But still 🤯🤯). Now I want to count how many things I actually own and test myself. Or track how many things I use in a day on average. And then compare those numbers. Such as items used per day. Multiply that by average life span. (And don’t count repeat items more than once lol). 😅😅
    My aunt just gave me a small George Foreman grill. Lol. I will prob just pass it on. I think I’ve cleared all of those areas, although some of them prob need a review by now.
    I would say tho that my “trophies” still matter to me as I once lost some of those a long time ago…tragically. Although most of them are very small and fit easily into one memory box with most of the other “precious things.” (Not literal trophies tho. Lol. Mostly it’s just a few small medals and pins and small things like that. Like track, band, etc). I feel like for me, I need to keep “victory” reminders around more than most might would need to. (I try not to live in the past, but I use them to remind myself of current possibilities. Like a kind of faith in myself boost for whatever comes next. And yah I don’t need to keep every little ribbon tho lol).
    I thought more about my adult son tho when you said trophies and nice boxes. He’s got a lot but I can’t decide for him. He loves nice shoes and also things like components. But granted some shoes he will sell and some components he needs the warranty info and parts and such for. So I’m just gonna let him do his own thing with those. Lol.
    Oh right yah. My small hamper is also my “laundry basket.” So it’s true. I don’t need one. Lol. (Kinda need the hamper for now tho as we have a communal laundry space).

      @ArrowHillCottage  Před 4 měsíci +1

Why do I think I must do all of this? Esp over things like pajamas (nobody is gonna see them and nobody cares-although I still like to be “neat” (prob bordering on ocd stuff like nice stacks etc) but at least I only do it once now…and there’s less of it. 😂😂

    Disagree on the notebooks for children going to school. Rather a limit like 1 or 2 is ideal i say that cause sometimes back to school shopping is cheaper on those supplies than the rest of the year. However send the old notebooks. Use em up. Then 1 or 2 extra max for the family. If 4+ kids then maybe 3 only. But then if needed in the year yes its ok. Otherwise I would also remain flexible on this if a child seems to prefer writing. Might not be as common but this is a get to know your kids oreferences and work with them.
