Real columnar trees exist only in apples. There you can have a very slender tree, alsmost without sideshoots. Of course, at the base of this year's growth there can develop sideshoots., but they should be cut back in june to 15cm. - With stonefruit real columnar trees like the apple columnar trees , like our Malini trees, are not existing. in the best sense you can describe the so called columar stone fruit varieties as pilar-type trees, with very fertile but upright sideshoots, forming in total a rather small and slender tree....

Thank you! That was an excellent presentation. I have 7 "columnar" trees that I'm ready to plant (4 apple and 3 pear). noticed the pear growing longer, more vertical branches. I was tempted to cut them back. Your presentation has made those pear trees very happy!

Espalier the trees with stone fruits, columns for apples and pears.
You did everything but actually say that but I think I got the message. :)

Do any other fruit trees grow in columnar form, other than apple?

Yes, Apples are the most popular but you can find columnar pears, plums, cherries, nectarines and apricots. From what I've seen so far apricots and nectarines are either very rare or very popular since they are almost never available.
