    A video about the relaxed atmosphere in the picturesque port of beautiful Pythagorion on a lovely morning in May. Lots of sailboats already around in the harbour. One sailboot is coming in, mooring. A daily cruise boat (captain Andreas) with tourists is leaving the harbour heading for a day out on remote beaches along the southern coast of the island.

    2018_03_14 Hi everybody! Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the discussion here with their comments. But now - after more than 5 years - I feel we have had enough comments here on technical aspects of mooring.!
    My intention then was to record the beautiful atmosphere in the harbor of Pythagorion on Samos island. I am no sailor at all. I am busy taking photographs and videos.
    I enjoyed it very much watching the sailboat coming in and people from other boats helping out. So thanks to them and the crew on this boat (unknown to me!)
    Now my focus is more on the island of Ikaria. If you want to know how it looks over there, please watch my videos "Ikarian Dreamscapes"!

    Well done. I guess most people miss that they dropped their anchor and dragged backwards (what the deck hand was doing) and did a nice job setting up the stern lines. In a cross breeze, fenders were out and it was nice and slow, even started with the upwind line.

    Hey, so strange this vid popped up in the recommended column. Watched it and thats my boat ANA on the leeward side and he didn't even rest on it - I was obviously out. Absolutely nothing wrong with this mooring - standard drill, perfectly executed. People catching the line were obviously sailors from another boat who know the drill. Had I been there I would have helped.Can't believe that's my boat next door!

    My sincere complement to the skipper and the crew of the boat.
    I have only one argument. People, without any relevant experience, when watching this video, may think that it is so but so easy, that they believe they can do it without having to be taught first.

    7/10 - +1 have lines appear to be evenly coiled to pass ashore, +1 use winches to pull yourself to where you want to be, not people. +1, show that you revert to bowlines and not lines set to slip.

    Hey, you're not in your car. On a boat like this it is possible to steer with your body facing the rear. Much easier. By the way, that skin doesn't look like it's made for the Greek sun.

    5/10 - it is by far not elegant to pull around a 10 ton boat by people power. Next time when you back in, have your windward line ready (=both end on cleat, lead outward under the railing) and when fixed you set engine forward, steer to left and balance the boat straight while your other crew member throws the lee line to the mooring. (Actually you can practice throwing a loop on the mooring, it is not hard from the height of the boat.) This case you dont need spectators breaking their back.

    It's not too bad, considering the other deckhand does nothing. There are always nice people/other skippers at the pier to help out. One fender at the stern would be advisable though.

    I hate the idea of tossing a line to an old guy on the seawall whom you may not know and then hope that he does the right thing. If you are passing a line ashore toss a bowline to put on the cleat and do your own hauling. Use your cleats and winches. While the video doesn't show the line at the cleat on the seawall, it looks like it was just looped around the cleat base as a turning point rather than being hitched or applying several turns. Looks like a sawing chafe point as the boat surges in it's slip and while double lines run from the boat to dock if one side fails both side of the line drop free. I know that I'm being picky, but if you fail your neighbors are going to really be pissed.

    • @kevnurse
      @kevnurse Před 10 lety +3

      Firstly, the skipper was short-handed, so he needed help from the shore. Most people on a quayside know the drill if they offer help.
      Secondly, throwing a bowline would be a stupid idea. The mooring points on the quayside are rings. Check out the first few seconds of the video to see them.
      Depending the length of stay, the condition of the warp and the anticipated conditions (wind, swell, etc), its a matter of judgement about how the warp is secured to the ring. Given the popularity of the resort, its a good chance that the ring is quite smooth and unlikely to chafe the warp. But I wasn't there. Neither were you.
      And yes, you are being picky....

    • @edwardjarvis1479
      @edwardjarvis1479 Před 10 lety

      Kev Nurse Kev, I must confess that I missed the fact that the quay used rings rather than cleats. Here in the states cleats are the norm. Thanks for the correction. I understand that "most people on the quayside know the drill", however, your comment acknowledges that some may not, hence, I stand with my first statement. When I throw to an unknown individual wishing to be a good samaritan I usually have a brief conversation as to what I'd like to happen. As for being picky, You Bet. It's my boat. Good sailing and thanks for the heads-up on the rings.

    • @EmmanuelRaptakis
      @EmmanuelRaptakis Před 9 lety +3

      You will find that more often than not in the Aegean there are no cleats but rings instead. The way these chaps did it is the way it is done most of the time around here. And usually the old guy is a fellow skipper who would rush to help when they see another boat approaching. Local rules...

      Well, I've skippered in Greece for years. Normally if I have crew onboard I instruct them to jump and lock the windward line to shore. Then I can drive on it and keep my bow against the wind. I never trust someone a shore. If I'm singel handed on my boat it's always someone that want's to help, so I expect the worst and have a back up solution. Somehow people out there doesn't know that if you get a windward aft mooring on you can drive on it and keep the boat for hours like that, the only thing is that it's no time to try to give it back. Just lock it and will sort it out later.
      So in my opinion, that's why the skipper looks so stressed, if you don't lock it everything has to go fast, and as the guy on the dock, trying to hold a 8 ton boat against the wind from the side (according to the flag) don't think anybody that's strong. So lock the line! And if they didn't had an anchor in the would be laying alongside against the leeward boat.
      Somehow when I see things like that, skippering here in Greece, it makes me wonder why there isn't more damages.
