    The Orion 8" reflector on a Dobsonian mount I purchased in the mid 90s is still wonderful today. This last weekend I was looking at the moon/Jupiter/Saturn with my wife and kids. Manual tracking gets so annoying though. That Atlas mount is tempting!

    A very nice video. Nicely done but let me suggest a few things that I believe will help you improve your work. Script what you wish to say. Use cue cards if necessary. This will help eliminate "think" pauses. Your words will flow better and it will help to engage your audience. Audio is always tough, especially outdoors. This slightest breeze can distort your audio and muffle what you are saying. Sure there is a lot of expensive equipment that can be used to combat this but ,if you are anything like us you want to spend your money of new astronomy and astrophotography toys. I would suggest trying to do most of your audio in post production as voice overs. This way you can more easily control the environment as well as save your time in the field for enjoying the stars. I mean this in no way to be insulting or overly critical. It is purely meant to help. Keep up the hard work. This is a topic near and dear to me. I'll follow your channel with hopes and seeing many more videos from the both of you.

    I have that exact same setup! Orion Atlas, Orion 8" f/3.9 Newt, Baader MPCC III, Canon 7D Mk II (and original 7D, and T1i). Since you have a modded T3i, have you thought about the DIY cooling project? Martin Pyott has a video. It's cheap, and requires no modification to your camera. Also, I recommend a better mount for your guiding scope! A dovetail screwed into the top, and mount the guidescope with rings solidly to the dovetail bar.

    Dont have to go CCD right away, can go webcam route but depends on what you are going to image really? If Deep sky for Galaxy then need a camera or a cooled specific matched camera for the scope. Makers like ZWO, Altair astro make great cameras as a resonable price too. Just managed in the last month to get a CCD starlight xpress set up so having to relearn everything again and new stuff too !!!

    • @GalacticHunter
      @GalacticHunter  Před 5 lety +1

      The Jump starter we bought was fine for our Atlas EQ-G and would last 4-5 hours. After a year of use though, it would sometimes just stop working for a few seconds at random (thus turning off our mount and we would have to re star align and everything...) so we then bought a deep cycle battery.

    I just discovered your channel tonight and have already watched 3 videos in a row #4,5, and the equipment tour. I love your videos. I’ve just started again at age 57 after a 40 year hiatus. At age 13 I built a 6” reflector and started Astrophotography with B&W film that I printed in my basement darkroom. I just recently bought a very old Celestron C8 and then a mount. I hope to start Astrophotography again with my Nikon DSLR. I liked the intro to #4 where you talked about improving. That’s encouraging, starting with what I got, and improving on that.

    Salut Antoine, Talia,
    Nice off-serie, I like this format. What do you think about a Schmidt-Cassegrain like the Celestron Évolution 8 (203cm) vs a 8" (203) Newton?
    Cheers

    • @humwhatever185
      @humwhatever185 Před 4 lety

      As far as i know, SCT (Schmidt Cassegrain Telescopes) are awesome for planets because of their huge focal length. For example i think the 8" sct has a focal length over 2 meters, so a 10mm eyepiece will give you 200x magnification. So you will have a great view of the planets because you need a lot of zoom, which you'll get easily. The downside is that having a focal length that big will be bad for astrophotography : the big zoom wont allow you to see all targets, and taking photos will take forever. The 8" newtonian with a 3.9 f/d will allow you to take photos waaaay faster than a f/d 10+ sct. And you will see more of your targets. Sct is less forgiving in the tracking, as it id so zoomed in. So planetary=sct, astrophoto=newton. Its easier to do planetary with the newton than adtrophoto with the sct. Hope this helped !

  • @ScottCastrophotography

    Do you have to have the auto guider in order for the telescope mount to locate objects? I can't afford a laptop after this purchase lol

    • @GalacticHunter
      @GalacticHunter  Před 3 lety +1

    Hello you 2: D Thank you for bringing me to this hobby. I'm a big fan of your videos and I already own one or the other equipment. I started with a F5 newtonian telescope and then switched to a Celestron C8. Now I have ordered a F3.9 6-inch newtonian and have a question to you. The Baader MPCC has been designed for F4.5 …. , and I know you both use it successfully for your photography. My question is now whether this corrector in the price is best in slot or if you have already made experiences with other correctors. Sorry for my bad english but that is what Google translater told me to write :D ; I still have a second question: are you not afraid of all the animals that you encounter on your nightly excursions? I live in Austria and there we are largely free from poisonous animals thank God. I could not set a foot in a desert where I know it's teeming with snakes and spiders and everything wants to kill me. I would be very happy if i got an answer to my two questions. clear sky

      Hi Roland, Google Translate did a good job! Yes we use the Baader MPCC and never had any problem, it works perfectly with our scope! We have not tried any other coma corrector since we are satisfied with ours. As for the animals, we have snakes, scorpions, spiders, mice, and coyotes. We have encountered spiders (see ep 2) and coyotes, but not the rest. It is scary but as long as we do not try to bother them, it should be safe enough... Fingers crossed lol. Clear Skies !

    • @GalacticHunter
      @GalacticHunter  Před 7 lety +1

      I almost did. We just can't image with a CCD right now because of how far we have to drive and how small (4 hours) our window for imaging is before we have to drive back home. I think it would take much longer if we had to get the different channels, etc. A CCD camera would be a great addition when we finally have a backyard, or even as a second camera running on another targt at the same time as our 7dmii.

    I have a decent point and shoot camera, would I be able to take photos with that or would I need a DSLR camera?

    • @GalacticHunter
      @GalacticHunter  Před 4 lety

      We started with a point and shoot camera and were able to get "okay" pictures of the Moon but that was it.. You definitely need a DSLR camera if you want to do deep sky imaging.

    What kind of eyepiece is best recommended for newtonians that isnt as expensive as the televue brand?

    • @GalacticHunter
      @GalacticHunter  Před 6 lety

      since we mostly do Astrophotography, we use the eyepiece that came with the telescope (32mm plossl) and an Orion 5mm planetary eyepiece for planets

    You shouldn’t plug the auto guider into the mount. You should use ASCOM and plug the guider into the laptop. Great video still.

    Do you need use a spacer between the MPCC and the camera?

      Nope, thankfully, the focus is perfect without a spacer :)

    • @puuxexil
      @puuxexil Před 7 lety

      You're lucky. I have a similar setup: Orion 8" F/5 with the Baader MPCC and Canon T2i, it seems like it doesn't have enough focus travel. :( I guess I'll have to jerry-rig something. I wanted to have it for the Eclipse, but my pics seem to have turned out okay.

    • @GalacticHunter
      @GalacticHunter  Před 7 lety

      Someone I know with the same setup uses a tiny piece of cardboard that he sticks in between the camera and the telescope, it's small but just enough to achieve perfect focus.

    your dream is to image with a CCD camera and claim $400 for a CCD camera is a lot of money what? I'd be happy to have a DSLR I could use with backyard eos I mean I could get one it take me 2 months of trying not to spend any money which is hard.

    • @GalacticHunter
      @GalacticHunter  Před 7 lety

      We can't use Backyard EOS sadly because we're on mac. Yes I would love to have a CCD camera, but not a $400 one..

    • @MatthewHKnight
      @MatthewHKnight Před 7 lety

      I picked up a used Orion Deep Space G3 imager CCD off of ebay a month ago for $225 even came with a nice case don't use it much You can buy a used Thinkpad off ebay running Windows for under $200 that you can install all your Windows stuff on then using a external drive transfer it to your mac for processing.
      Personally I wouldn't recommend the Orion Deep Space G3 camera the software is way to buggy I had the software crash back to back on me the other night 8 times in the middle of trying to do pictures. And it's a $400 CCD I kinda wanna get a Revolution Imager R2 now but still depending! Might I add that my computer has been freshly formatted and has nothing on it other then the Orion software and it still crashed.
