DIY solution to a 2000 Explorer broken hatch (tailgate) latch

  • There is a small, plastic part that connects the latch, which is pulled by the person opening the hatch (tailgate), with the unlocking mechanism. This plastic piece can break (which mine did), and so I made a replacement out of aluminum. This video shows how I did that and, more importantly, how you should do it if you decide to try this method of repair.
So, after I did this, found out some Ford dealerships have the part for $5!!

My plastic piece keeps breaking. I tried being gentle with it after the first time. But it keeps happening. Shoddy design on Ford's part. But I've got 14 years out of a 2002 vehicle I bought back in 2006. So I can't complain.

So you have to make your own part to fix this??? How does Ford get away with this?

ihustle4mine Tv If I am remembering right, if you’re standing on the outside of the door looking in, you will pull to the left, toward the driver’s side. I actually tied a string to part of the linkage and drilled a hole in the trim just in case it stopped working, I could pull the string and open it manually ha ha

How about you start out with a 1"x .5" piece of wood. Install a M6 insert into it. then chisel or cut the wood perpendicular to the insert and form a rounded protrusion (tenon) that will fit into the hole on the door latch handle? And since it will all be made from the one block of wood the rounded dowel will be very strong. Its kind of the same principle as turning wood on a lathe and rounding square cuts of wood into cylindrical wood

Hey, do you have any suggestions to help fix what's known as the "Death Wobble" in an 00 Ford Explorer V6
Just replaced the upper control arm aswell as the lower ball joint on the passenger side.. to no avail
The rack looks pretty clean, thinking it's a worn shock. Any others?

I'd guess a combo of a bad out of balance wheel and one or more suspension parts still needs to be replaced. Check this link: www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/death-wobble.168141/

So these parts can’t be purchased?

Jake, the parts are hard to find. I think I got them off of a "parts website" located in Canada. After replacing them . . . only to have them break again after a year or so, I went ghetto. Haven't had an issue since.

I saw some zip tie videos but none show where to actually wrap the zip tie around. The handle has a hole that the zip tie goes through. That part is easy. but where on the unlocking mechanism do you run the zip tie through??
