Thanks everyone for the love and feedback! I didn't expect this to blow up the way it has over the last few weeks and I truly appreciate all the kind words. I thought I would take a moment to respond to a couple frequent questions and observations that have come up in the comments. Feel free to reply to this with anything you're curious about!
"What's this from?"
The audio is from Campaign 2, Episode 30 of Critical Role, the show where a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors sit around and play Dungeons & Dragons. The character is Nott the goblin and is voiced and played by Sam Riegel. Yes she does sound a bit like Winnie the Pooh.
"What do those numbers and lines on the right mean?"
The numbers are the drawing's frame # and the lines are timing charts. Search for "timing chart Toniko Pantoja" on CZcams for more info about what those are.
"What program did you use?"
Toonboom Harmony
"This looks a lot like Stitch."
This is very intentional! I took a lot of inspiration from Stitch's design.
"Milt Kahl head nod!"
If you noticed this you are a true OG ;)
"You should work for Disney!"
I kinda do! I'm a storyboard artist by trade, currently working at Oddbot, Inc. on a show for Disney Jr. I often do freelance animation work as well. My previous credits include Mary Poppins Returns (animation assistant), Muppet Babies (storyboard revisionist), Philharmonia Fantastique (animator), and the upcoming Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed (storyboard artist and revisionist). I have a degree in animation from LCAD and studied under several Disney veterans.
"Will you be finishing this or making more?"
I do plan on coloring this scene in the near future. I just wrapped up my wedding weekend and am adjusting to my new role as a supervising storyboard artist at Oddbot, so it will be a bit before I get the time to focus on it again. I don't currently have specific plans to make more CR content, but that doesn't mean I won't in the future. I'm also interested in making some musical animatics so be on the look out for those in the coming months. This will likely never be one of those CZcams channels where I'm constantly cranking out "content", but if you stick around I'm sure I'll have some cool stuff to share over the years!
Congrats on the wedding! Also for making an adorable animation that I’ve rewatched several dozen times.
What was your process for the in-betweens?
@@euts2557 I have a process video up on my channel if you want to see it! But primarily I work pose too pose, and refine as I go. I start the inbetweens once my keys and breakdowns are in a good place and tied down, leaving the drag and follow through elements (hair, loose clothing) and mouth off for later passes. Im not entirely sure how to explain how I create my timing charts - at this point it’s all very intuitive.
@@StephanieAnimates Thank you! Are there certain tips that one should know about in betweens, or does it just come after lots of practice, trial and error?
Amazing stuff, not much to ask, your process video on this animation was incredibly informative. One thing I am curious about was that you did a separate pass for the mouth, was this because it would have been too complex to include in just one pass or is it just because you wanted to for example put extra effort into the mouth animation since this is so lip-sync heavy piece?
Sam: Nott is a disgusting nasty goblin
Entire crit role fandom: How about no
Honestly any chancce of Nott being seen as gross or ugly was ruined the moment he described her as a goblin-girl. From that point on the monster-girl stans would not let go :P
That character design threw out the attributes "disgusting" and "nasty" and swapped them out for "cute" and "adorable".
yeah, things changed when they basically turned goblins into "stitch"
I’d love to see all the Critical Role characters in this kind of art style. So if the inspiration strikes you, I wouldn’t exactly complain 😉
Nott looks like Stitch but sounds like Winnie the Pooh.
Stitch the Pooh
Agreed. No pressure, but if they want to do it I support it 👍
Too bad that big studios like Amazon Prime like to take the cheapest route possible
This has a real “Lilo and Stitch” feel to it, with the drawing style. I LOVE it!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought this!!
Yes. I think it’s the teeth and to a lesser extent the big ears. Very cute.
Totally Disney-esque yes!
Oh yeah! It's kind of like if Pleakley was a goblin girl!
(I am at work & cannot look up the Animators name)
The Artist who made Lilo & Stitch (My 3rd favorite Disney movie after Hunchback & Fantasia I) got his start while at Disney as one of the lead Animators of Mulan.
He generally incorporated rounded edges in all of his art on Lilo & Stitch.
(Star Trek, Frankenstein, Paradise Lost & The Ugly Duckling in Hawaii. Such a unique Series. It's a crying shame they sold it to China after they finished with the TV series)
You know why this is gorgeous animation? Because people naturally and abruptly gear shift like this! All the little nuances-- Nott qualifying the statement, hyping it up --- the sudden candid dump of facts deflating the hype -- the immediate pick-me-up when the statement dazzles the listener regardless of the humiliating facts--- all of it! Just wonderful.
If I met this artist in person, and they showed me this on their phone, I'd say, 'Does Brad Bird know about you? Because he needs to!'
It's also the character design. The Principles of Appeal and Exaggeration (as I was taught them), aren't just about whether or not the drawing is of high quality, it's also about whether or not the shape and design has the silhouette necessary to make expressive motions. A cylinder can't demonstrate its facing in silhouette, so a cylindrical character can't either. This design for Nott has asymmetry, it has negative space, it includes obvious opportunities for follow-through and overlapping motion.
To me, more than anything, this is the great sin of modern animation, even stuff like Legend of Vox Machina. I know that it's a cost thing, a lot of the time, but the desire to have characters look "real" reduces opportunity for gorgeous motion like this. And I'm so glad people are still doing it this way.
"If you REpress, you DEpress, darling! To IMpress, you must EXpress!"
-Brad Bird, in the voice of Edna Mode
Couldn't say it any better. Subscribed!
That's some origins Disney level animating right there, the old stuff!
with a little polishing, she could pass it up for a Disney OC
@@imjang2430 I think it more than succeeds. It has expressiveness comparable to The Iron Giant. I love it.
@@gregorymckenzie7511 Well, to be fair, it comes from somebody who hardly saw any old school disney
@@imjang2430 To be doubly fair, neither did I. :v
@@gregorymckenzie7511 fair 'nuff
I loved Nott's Ears moving to indicate her feelings as she talked!
And the finger 'walking' at 0:10
The way the character says “Yeah” at the end always gets me, so cute 🥰
the little head wiggle nott does when they say "evidence" makes my day
Super endearing! Well done! Could loop this clip forever 😁
Which episode is the clip from btw? Do you have a timestamp?
It's from episode 30 in campaign 2. I don't have an exact timestamp but it's towards the start of the episode, when they're releasing the kidnapped characters from their bonds.
For some reason this animation made me fall in love with Nott. I forget what episode I was on at the time, but I remember not really caring much for the characters till this.
Currently I'm on episode 90-something. Eventually fell in love with them all.
This is the cutest portrayal of Nott I've ever seen! I love this so much!!
This has some real "Don Bluth" energy to it. Like, I'm getting serious "An American Tail" vibes. I mean that as high praise.
Absolutely gorgeous linework
I desperately want an animated short another Critical Role done in this art style.
IT’S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
The amount of solid drawing and proper in betweening on this is incredible. Your secondary actions are gorgeous
Wonderful~. Such perfect capturing of different emotions, seamless easing and follow-through, and lovely timing for everything. It feels so natural and warm to look at~. It reminds me of some of Don Bluth's slow but well animated scenes.
Keep it up ^^
For a half second I thought James Baxter animated this. This is so smooth and charming. 🥺 I subscribed.
OH my god this is incredible!!! You have such a talent for finding the smallest details in the voice and giving them tangible, believable facial movement 😍 I love it, you're so freaking talented
The last “yeah!” And the expression gives me life
So pure and innocent
I just found this and have watched it over and over again, it’s so good!! The way you draw Nott is so cute, and HOLY COW THE ANIMATION IS SO SMOOTH!!!
This might be weird, but I love the way you animate her ears especially. They’re very flexible and light, so they would have that big of drag after they pop out from the hood (and how they move when Nott is expressing a certain emotion is such a wonderful detail!)
Again, you did a fantastic job!!
300ish frames for 13 seconds. That's amazing and you deserve to be paid for that level of work. Wow!
Oh this is amazing!!! I love how you've drawn Nott, and the little extra movements to add some liveliness to her! She's wonderful!
I have no idea how many times I have rewatched this, it’s adorable!
The detail on the in-between frames is excellent, makes everything look very fluid
This reminds me of the animated Robin hood. I just got huge nostalgia, thank you so much. I wish this animation style was more common nowadays. You just made my day.
This was very well done for a pencil test. Love how fluent and animated this character is as she is talking. Makes me wish Disney would have more animations just like this or any other animation company in that matter.❤️
Keep up the good work you wonderful gem! 💎
The FRAMES!!! All the little movements of the expression, the ears my god the EARS!!! Truly excellent work, my girl has never looked better!
Just brilliant. By the sound of the dialogue, this could've reasonably been done with one expression. But you've totally enhanced it with that little expression journey - starting timid, getting determined, becoming confident before falling back to timid again. And yet, it's not distracting - the dialogue still totally commands each beat. And on top of all that, you did managed to show Nott's cuteness that we as the audience can hear beyond her scary appearance. Just brilliant.
that little milt kahl head wiggle on "traced the evidence" i'm in love
Cute animation. Thank you for sharing.
The head waggle gets a lot of love, but I'd like to also compliment the finger motion on the 'walking døwn the street' bit
So I just recently got introduced to Crit Role via Vox Machina when it initially dropped last year. And obviously I just saw the announcement that the Nein are getting a show too.
I immediately fell in love with Nott just from looking at her design and seeing a couple animatics like this, but I gotta say, if the actual official cartoon design is not this exact look, *my day will be ruined and my disappointment will be immeasurable.* So goddamn adorable lol
God the little head movements when she says "traced the evidence" is so subtle and smooth I can't stop watching it. This is amazing!
So unbelievably smooth! Absolutely beautiful work!
I love how smoothly this video flows!!! Awesome job!!! ❤❤❤
This is so beautiful! Thank you for uploading
The little head swaggle on "evidence" is a split second of magic that has made my day. Its subtle but really impactful! Milt Kahl would be proud, I think
Adorable! And really really smooth and expressive.
This is amazing love the smoothness of the animation really amazing
Just wanna say your work is AMAZING. This straight up has SO much emotion. Things like this remind me what I miss about traditional animation. Never stop being amazing.
Simply amazing. Just fantastic animation work!
I love this so much!! It’s beautiful!
this is beautiful work!!
this is beautiful! i love this animation style! amazing job!
incredibly well done. Such smooth and expressive movements
I must've watched this like 20 times in a row now, the smoothness and art style is incredible and theres so many details ive noticed each time i hit replay. the expressions, the way her eyes dart around, the way the ears move--i know only a little bit about animation but i know that animating head movement while talking is incredibly difficult and even many experienced professionals struggle with it! plus as a whole this animation is just so enjoyable to watch excellent job
I keep coming back to this animation. this is really well dun
You did such brilliant work on this.
Omg this is absolutely amazing!
I seriously need more of these!
this is done so wonderfully!! it’s so smooth and i love how you’ve drawn nott’s expressions well.
This crosses my mind every few months and I just have to come back and watch it. Love it!!
I have come back to watch this so many times. It's so smooth, with such an adorable character design. Love it!
Looking amazing!!!
This is sooooooo smooth and clean! You should be proud of yourself!!
Such beautiful and smooth animation, keep up the good work!
This is the type of animation I dream to make. The very fluidness of your animation is almost mesmerizing. This is chef's kiss all the way.
Oh my god I'm in love this is gorgeous it's so SMOOTH and the little nods are such a charming detail
Your animation... It's soooo smooth! I love it!
I listen to Critical Roll all the time when I work on stuff on the sidelines and watching this is just priceless. Animation is not an easy feat to do and in such good quality too. Really well done!
Wow this is insanely cool! So expressive! ❤️❤️❤️
This animation is so beautiful and so fluid great work

This was fantastic, I rewatched it just enjoying the secondary details and fluidity
So freaking cute. And the subtleties of the animation, all the small movements, are amazing. Ive looped it many times and always catch some new little detail each time. Amazing work ^^
AWESOME.
that animation is so frickin well done.
This is amazing work!!!!!
Beautiful emotions!
This is really good! Well done! ^w^
This is the most adorable thing! Expressions flow so well! Lots of movements but clean and easy to read!
Lovely! So smooth
This is SO good!
I love your automation of Nott, it's great!
It's also just amazing animation. The subtleties are so good.
amazing! so fluid!
I almost love pencil tests more than finished animations, they really take you out of the immersion for a second and let you realize the detail that’s put into each frame
This looks so good
This looks amazing
This is one of my favorite Critical Role animations! I find myself coming back here to see the cute “Yeah 😃” at the end. 😭
Also the movements in your animation are so fluid and subtly show the body language in a joyous bouncy manner. Very nice work!!!
This is very clean. Good work. 👍
woooow! that's sooo beautifully animated!
This is gorgeous! Well done!
