The other possibility here is to reverse out as far as possible towards the other side of the finger, and turn the boat to starboard with a firm blast of forward. We have done that, but any wind at all from starboard makes that impossible, and it also puts us uncomfortably close to the boats on the other side, and also the end of the finger. This gives us a bit of room to maneuver.
