For anyone who’s interested in getting a deeper understanding of what you're listening to… I’ve pulled together a mini-study of the set - demystifying the “art of DJing” and showing that it isn’t just pushing buttons! :)
Mood:
The overall mood of the set was chilled and melodic, with a low/mid-level energy. The lower intensity storytelling here aligns very well with the energy of the location - overlooking the ocean, open space - feeling close to nature. This is mirrored by the lower intensity - tribal / ‘afro house’ / melodic nature of the set. The objective was to get the crowd to feel the emotions and sway to the music (see crowd @11:00!)
Motifs & Frequencies:
The set could be described as having three ‘chapters’ - for the first 'chapter' Blond:ish (Vivie-Ann) starts the set with melodic tracks that are characterised by longer motif lengths (i.e - the main motif of the track repeats every 16 or 32 beats) - often driven by mid/high frequencies. This gives a chilled-out, somewhat melancholy vibe for the opening.
Note - When I say ‘motif’ - this is the loop or most noticeable repeating element of the track. Perhaps to put it more simply - if you had to whistle the track to someone, such that they could recognise it - which part would you whistle? This is the main motif - often also described as the rhythm or the melody.
At around 35:00 Vivie-Ann transitions to a slightly higher energy, using tracks that are more rhythmic rather than melodic - slightly more intense percussive elements and also with a slightly darker mood to them until the 55:00 mark. Then she downshifts gears again (for the final ‘chapter’) and lowers the energy once again through to the end.
Energy/Intensity:
Overall, the BPM was pretty much maintained throughout - starting at 118 and moving to 119 by the 16:00 mark. A similar stability / unity was maintained with the percussion intensity - never moving beyond a low/mid-level energy (nor would you really want to increase the energy, given the nature surroundings)
To create movement and interest in the sound, Vivie-Ann alternated between tracks that are primarily driven by low frequencies (basslines) Vs high & mid frequencies - as well as alternating between instrumental and vocal tracks.
In terms of key observations and emphasising what was done very well:
Marrying Energy with the Environment:
Vivie-Ann does a great job of marrying the energy / vibe of the music with the energy of the surrounding environment.
The purpose of the track selection is largely to make the crowd ‘feel’ an emotion - hence lots of melodies. While the set does become somewhat more rhythmic in the middle (and therefore moving people from ‘their head‘ into ‘their body’) the sound predominantly occupies the higher frequencies and never becomes too energetic for the surroundings.
Vivie-Ann also does a good job of mixing in the percussive elements of the incoming track earlier - such that the energy doesn’t fall away as the current track loses steam.
Note - Many current-day producer/DJs let the outgoing track virtually play through before mixing in the next track. This often has the consequence of a drop in perceived energy levels before the main motif / drop of the next track comes in.
As a final point - you can see that she understands / appreciates the audio/visual experience - 43:50, 53:10, 55:30,56:10, 58:00, 1:03:00, 1:05:55 !!! ….as she turns to look out over the ocean and watch the sunset - as if to feel how the sound and visual marriage works together.

Right out of the gate I thought "sweet, magical lee burridge vibes!"
I first listened to this set with ear phones whilst at work, by 10 minutes in I couldn't help but daydream about myself galloping across wide open fields whilst naked on a horse, long hair blowing in the wind slow motion, I can't ride a horse and I don't have long hair but in my daydream I looked so god damn sexy.. and for that I thank you Cercle, as for BLOND:ISH I have no words other than if you ever see a skinny dude with a wig on riding through one of you're sets, then that's me, maybe hop on the back, we can ride into the sunset(more likely a carpark) but that's just fine with me.. yours sincerely skinny boy with a dream x

@@Nugliscious I'd only listened to 20 minutes when I commented, but I was so right, because I then went on a night cycle ride and played it from the start, the combination of the tunes with the moonlit empty roads was amazing. When I got back home the meowing at 1:12:38 started the instant I reached out to scratch a yawning cat!
