  • Hey!
Here are the 5 (actually 6 and a half) things to be aware of when you go to Petra. I will soon upload my Jordan vlog, with my honest and genuine admiration of the country.

Just visited the place today. Scams.... I could count about 20. First of all there are a lot of children who are misused to sell stuff - means the parents have stopped them from school - Shame on the parents and on the local community allowing this. 2nd scam - customer service in the cafés. Especially Ahmed, the owner (manager?)of the café located between the Treasury and the Theater.... Oh, man. This guy was yelling at me when I told him to remove those cats from my child (not afraid of anything obviously). Then he said he doesn't care about Indians, Saudi Arabian people or anyone. What he is actually using these cats for is to make customers buy more food from him and feed the poor animals. Because he said he loved those cats I asked him when was the last time he brought them to the vet... Bottom line - donkeys, horses, camels, cats, dogs and CHILDREN are misused in a horrible way just to bring money (aggressively!) to the local "manager" of the complex - the government gets its money but there is also Mr.Big who is is getting a big tranche of the money. Jordan is country nr . 58 on my list and I'm truly disappointed by Petra specifically. Expected more for the huge amount of money I paid to support Jordan and Petra local communit... UN/ESCO wake up! Or else I'll start thinking the head of this snake is you....

Thank you very much for the video. It is so true what you have said. Most people will talk about the beauty of Petra but ignore the scams. As a consequence tourists quickly became preys as soon as they enter the site. Bedouins including their children are too money oriented and they will rip you out off as much money as they could on the expense sometimes of the suffering of their animals. It is funny that they even try to sell you small stones that you can easily collect yourself during your walk. It is a shame that the Jordanian Government does not intervene, makes you pay a huge sum to visit and then you are left subject to the harassment from Bedouin in every corner. Sometimes they can even become rude when you refuse their 'services'.

Don’t be weird. This reeks of western entitlement, you are a guest in their home, THEIR ancestors built these structures. You came to enjoy Petra, do so by exploring the place and not buying from them if you’re so pressed about their prices.

@@StuckInThe80ssss That is not right. You are telling that it is normal for Jordanians to prey on tourists and that tourists have to be so tolerant and accept it. That is really more than only a little bit racist.

Just so everyone watching this video knows, the people working in Petra are actually not bedouins, they are a gypsy tribe that migrated to Jordan about 1000 years ago from India and now pretend to be bedouins to get respect from the tourists. Nothing against gypsies, but do be aware that they are in no way indigenous to Petra and have zero ancestral claim to the site. The Bedouin in Wadi Rum however are in fact from true ancient arab tribes and lineages.

The natural scenery/landscape in Jordan is beautiful. But I noticed locals do not take care of their treasure- it's dirty. I feel like most of the greetings, the smiles are all for interest. Genuine? Some, not everyone. It's all about what they can get from you. I leave with a bad taste. The animals. OMG, poor creatures may some of their people step up to help them. They are abused beyond belief. Will I ever come back to Jordan? I doubt it.

This is not true. The worst is in Petra but in other places, where are less tourists people are nicer. And local people are very helpful. We have broken car and they help us not for money etc. In every country are scamers in tourists places. But there are also normal very friendly people.

If they are scammers, fuck them. Not every Bedouin is a scammer. My tour guide inside told me to be careful of the scammers and taxi who charge more than 1 JD.

One thing I can’t figure out these Bedouin’s does not matter if your in Jordan or in the West Bank. If you ever come across there tent (home) you will see expensive things like rugs, Mercedes Benz. Etc. that tells me they are loaded with money but they prefer to live in tents. How do they pay there taxes?

The ticket includes riding a horse for 800 metres . What they do is to ask for money, like tips after. Is wrong saying that is not included. Beduins are very nice people and also Jordanians are very friendly polite and offer hospitality! Children yes they sell cards but they sell them they dont ask just for money so is good to help the children and families! Who says they dont go to school? They have many schools for the beduins in all the villages. If you ask for a guide at the tickets they will give you a guide with licence . If it is expensive you can go without guide because they dont oblige you to take one! The guide told us that the gipsied aske for money and do things that are not ok with tourists. Not the beduins. The beduins are working and living there in Petra and they need to earn money for their families so is good to help them I believe and not think negative about them. I had 8 days in Jordan have been everywhere and is a wonderful people and a wonderful country which offers us so much to see and i appreciated a lot Jordanian people! Thank you for the video !

Wherever you go you need to be careful of the scammers not only in Petra, anyway I think I need to correct the tour guides point in your video, because I think the tour guide that you had in Petra wasn't an official tour guide, obviously he was one of the people that walking around Petra all the time and trying to make money at any way and he ended up being your tour guide, so next time when you come to Petra you can ask for an official tour guide in Petra visitors center, a guide who has a guiding license from the ministry of tourism and antiquetes to guide tourists and you'll see the huge difference by then..

she is incorrect. horse riding IS INCLUDED IN TICKET. The amount of a tip should be no more than 2 j.d. since the Garbadge men & car mechanics in Amman only make 1 j.d. an hour!!
The horse leaders will fuss at you...but remind them of those workers in Amman and it settles them right down!!🤭
My 5 tips are:1. Buy the Jordan expert visa and take 3 full days in Petra.
2.buy your postcards from the little boys in the SiQ... no, their Parents don't send them down...those are the little adhd boys who flunk out of kindergarten and first grade and this is their saving grace.
#3. buy your gifts for friends back home in Petra. Same $ as the shops in Amman but I guarantee you the exchange you can have with the women in those shops is well worth it and sitting and drinking tea with them- skip Starbucks. The Bedu need the money way more than the execs in Seattle.
As for prices, I've had the women give me extra silver rings and things when they thought I overpaid them. So that I ended up with the deal. They are Muslims and Islam believes in fairness in trade. I try to buy from several different people. Likewise, don't take your lunch unless you get it from the little falafel shop next to the ChiffChaff..your not going to be saving so much. Its worth it to stop and take tea and snacks from the smaller shops along the way.
    4. Camels are a nice way to get down by the coliseum or to the " church" or the fancy restaurant (nice buffet expensive but excellent , worthwhile quality ..)but from there if only 2 days - Walk to the Monastery Ad Deir and then the top of the world- but take a donkey back.
#4.5 regarding the picture she's flashing,
Yes the steps are open and free to the top of Jubal Hubth, but you might not go far enough around the back to find them. ..( the opposite way of how she's gesturing, I might add, you must go round the back of the Kings tombs.)
Again, pleasant tea spots along the top way with amazing views and charming young Bedu. ( handle yourself the same way as you would in a big city.)
One thing she did get right was agree on prices before hand.
The Indian Jones way to the high place of sacrifice is cool.. (but very far) and then you can walk down the stairs in front that take you down to the Amphitheater.
    5. basically don't pay more than 5 -10jd for anything! but a camel ride and that -pay no more than 15. ( and shes wrong, the more you dont take the animals, the less money for them to feed them.) Any time anyone troubles you about the prices, very sweetly remind them of the workers in Amman.
On the third Day, you can go the back way into the Monastery Ad Deir -arrange a taxi from your hotel.(5-7 jd) If you have bonded with the/a Beduoin they can meet you and guide you but again agree on a price before hand and don't pay more than 15jd unless there's more of you and you can each chip in. If there is camels or mules involved then obviously thats going to be more 20j.d maybe even 30.
Thats the way to do Petra right and if you are wealthy and you have more than by all means give more freely. Now this is not touching on the lovely frontway through the tunnel and around the back to the stairs at Jubal Hubth or the Lion &snake tombs or hiking Oum Biyhara ...that would require guides and at least two.more Days minimum!!

Petra it's worth it. Every where you go as a tourist it going to be that risk. They have different scams but they all have them. We were there 4 days, we have an amazing time. So much history; so interesting. We watch many documentaries before going, we read a lot and watch videos from many different people, they all tell you about the scams. So, by the time we were there we knew what to do. It's not hard as it seems. We actually enjoy the company of a local guide. I didn't want to hire a guide from the center because I want to do walk at my pace, with out rushing, or having some talking constantly and enjoy such a beautiful place. We got the Jordan pass so could go back. We did the "Indiana Jones walk" That was the walk of my life. Almost 5 hrs. But it was so fun, relaxing, beautiful sites/views, so quite... Just amazing. I recommend you go some day. If you love history and nature; I am sure you'll enjoy. ❤️

That is why in a foreign country you need to take with you a professional licensed guide to guide you and to protect you against these scams. Anyway the pleasure of Petra outweighs these petty scams.

What you are doing is just disrespectful for the whole bedouin community! You stayed there 2 days and you think you are able to know everything? Girl you are accusing people to try to work. the bedouins as you said have no other option but working in Petra. They dont get any help from the government and it's their only way to feed their family! I live in Petra since 2 years and you just need to set boudaries when people insist to sell you sonmething. Last thing, the way you dress is way inapropriated for this place so don't be surprised if people look judgemental when they see you, you are in middle east not in ibiza!

I agree. Lydia knows what she's talking about. P.s. she doesn't like me. But that's ok. It doesn't change that what she says is factual.

      Well
In fact she is right they try to scam you the moment you start a conversation.
Well if they are poor it doesn't mean it's right to use tricks and manipulation to be paid
Free horse ride included in your ticket. They will tell you it's free once you arrive they will force u to pay and if you refuse they threaten you
Inside Petra as she said they will kindly offer to help you taking pictures and telss you it's for free at the end they ask for 10 jd
Its the government issue to solve. I understand their need to make money but they are not allowing the government to even help them
You lived their for 2 years will am Jordanian and unfortunately its a shame

People there are rude and disrespectful to women, don't visit Petra...the tour guide was saying bad words to the American women , and these women didn't do anything...just because they said they where from U.S the jordanians started hating...that's very disrespectful, these women are not Muslim...very bad place to visit...people there don't help unless you pay them , they don't willingly from heart help you...they want something in return...that's bad manners ...
