    I have reasons to miss them. I owned a Subaru repair business and needed more space than a single stall was giving so bought out a truck rental down the street from a guy who just got too old as his trucks were too. Other than one KW tow truck, he had all ford trucks and of various sizes an shapes. These trucks started mid fifties as pickups and went up from there to include a couple of the N' series and others, cab over, conventionals, and any probably shown in your video as it was quite a large collection in the best place possible as they were in anchorage ak and were the only rental of their kind meaning state and burough rented as well. Most were so tired I just sent them off to the crusher as body panels lacked a lot of looking like any ever made yet as I stripped them down removing fuel cells an tires, I noticed that some were real fine so parked them off to the side as we were moving right along an was on a tight schedule so no time to fiddle. Then when we opened the storage sheds to get them empty there it set a t model pick up in an about 1920 something as I didn't know them well then an hadn't driven the ford much as we were into big trucks. I grew fond of that l series as we had to that were low mile never put back in service so we did. Then we started selling them putting some of the car lots in town very angry as they never left the shop without good brakes, steering, glass an heat, and a color... most were maroon as that was the original color. We did have a l series truck there for a very short while and a bunch of people bidding it as it had the wet kit and slide back bed. and then the wheel lift but it was not so much a wrecker as the wheelbase wasn't all that much but it moved heavy containers and trailers, Not lowboy... a have to see thing. I kinda hoped for a couple thousand with all the interest but a guy from the lower forty eight bought it and surprise, it went for ten grand. He never asked for the high bid but laid his money down and said he was here to take her home... seeing the person connection I sold it to him.

    Man I get up around these things and they are hands down my favorite heavy trucks. The first class 8 I ever drove was a N model and my favorite has been a toss up between the CL9000 and the LTL9000. I personally have two N models now that are car haulers and I wish I could get my hands on a CL but there isn’t enough money or time on the day.

  • @theodoreskaff1209
    @theodoreskaff1209 Před 4 lety +7

    No H series?
    I heard that the reason Ford got out of the heavy truck business was because they weren't making any money on them. The biggest part of their sales was to large fleets who only ordered strpped down models withe no options. No money in that. And at the same time the new super duty F250 pick ups sales were booming and the need the factoy space.

  • @CTX50
    @CTX50 Před 4 lety +4

    The engine in the LTL9000 was mounted at a 6 degree angle to accommodate the air intake that was molded into the hood. Even without the external stainless air cleaners being available the truck was still gorgeous!

    • @ddintheshop
      @ddintheshop Před 4 lety

      The real reason for the 6 degrees of tilt on tall inline motors was to gain more foot room for the driver, not to meet up with the air intake. The cab was designed with a dog house that was needed for back of engine clearance.

    I still can't believe you didn't mention the oddest Ford of all, the twin engine, flathead V8 cabover, tri-axle, used by the military in WW2. Not much is known about these trucks, but as far as I know, they were used to pull vans, that were 50' or more, hauling pre-fabricated wings for the B-24 bomber to another plant for assembly. Apparently, they had dual drive trains, each driving one of two drive axles. Must have been a handfull, running two sticks with two clutches!!
