  • Three years ago, I was writing the manuscript that became my first book, QABALAH FOR WICCANS. But a lot can change in three years! While I'm still tremendously proud of this book, there are a number of ways that my perspectives and interests have shifted since I wrote it. In this video, I talk through some of my changing thoughts on the relationship between Wicca and Golden Dawn-style Qabalistic magic.

As an author myself I fully resonate with this. We write for where we are in that moment, but we are always growing and transforming in our practices, depth of understanding, and we need to give room for everyone to do that. It is not just books though, I see content creators struggle with this as well - they built their audience on where they were when they started, but have grown and changed since then and want to share that, but struggle with the fear of losing their audience.

Thank you for sharing your experience and views on Hermetic Qabalah in the context of witchcraft. My gateway drug into magick and the occult was Tarot. Started out with Rider-Waite-Smith, then landed on Thoth, so I was "forced" (so to speak) to learn Qabalah and Astrology in order to understand Thoth tarot. After that I made up my own version of solitary Wicca sprinkled with Hellenic polytheism (the Orphic hymns at the backbone of my practice). These days, I find myself doing more meditation, trance, and purification.

In looking back at Gerald Gardner, Doreen Valiente, and other founders and early practitioners and priests/priestesses of Wicca, I’ve little doubt that their practices and beliefs would not have also evolved considerably, and that they would look back on Wicca’s first days and their own teachings and beliefs as probably something they have drifted from over time. Early views of Wicca’s “direct connections” to an “unbroken line of practitioners” for instance, has been largely abandoned, and much of what Margaret Murray had to say at the time, influential in its day, has also been abandoned. And so I feel that looking back to what the earliest practitioners of Wicca were thinking and doing - well - dare I say it? May not have as much relevancy today than, other than perhaps using it to plot evolutionary paths and patterns to predict where Wicca is going tomorrow. It is the “tomorrow” aspects of pagan practices that expand the scope of nature to universes (above) and Quarks (below, or inside) that most excite me. It’s exciting to hear about your evolving beliefs. It’s the way of the universe - force and form ironically lol! I am looking forward to all the books you will write, Jack.

I’m reading it now. I love it but I really devour anything Qabalah. I understand what you are saying. We all grow and our path is our own. It’s all fascinating. So my question is….when’s the next book? 😜♥️

Could you share citations for the current research on the New Forest Coven?

Heselton's work on this is the best source of publicly available information, especially his book "In Search of the New Forest Coven." Dr. Christina Oakley Harrington has also given a few excellent talks about the people who came together pre-Gardner; one of them is available on CZcams and is titled "A Circle of Ecstatic Friends."

Also I have my grandfathers free mason things. Of course most is in code but I have always seen similarities in the rituals, tools, etc….
