Yeah I was pretty confused like I listened to betty and I know the lyrics and it says 'betty I'm here in your doorstep' and when I was listening to Cardigan I heard 'and you'd be standin' in my front porch light and i knew you'd come back to me' and I was like wait is this betty!!! and I came here fastly also thanks for helping me :D
That's awesome! I didn't realize the songs were connected until I saw that quote where Taylor said there were 3 songs that were connected and I was like how did I not realize this I listened to the album a million times already lol
Kinda late to this but I also love the metaphor of the car. I think the car represents James's love and whether or not he's in control of it. Every time he's with Betty, he's in his car and he's the one driving - whereas when he's with Augustine, she's the one driving him. There's also the line "stopped at a street light" which could represent that James's feelings of true "love" came to a pause when he lost Betty.

I think he mainly says that because he's introverted and he hates crowds, and since Betty is extroverted, she's probably surrounded with the type of people James doesn't like (like popular kids). Ines is definitely a girl who spreads rumors though, but he does admit that she was right about him this time.

I kinda feel bad for James, the guy lost the love of his life and already and social anxiety problems and after watching said love of his life dancing with another guy in a party he only came to for her he goes out and this other girl comes and asks him to get in her car and then James makes the biggest mistake of his life and cheats on the love of his life with this other girl and then she finds out and breaks up and then James apologizes as shown in the song and goes to her party and everything. I also obviously feel bad for August and Betty, I hope August finds another guy who's not in love already or something like that.

little late, but my guess is that they were at some kind of dance, james doesn’t like crowds but probably went to the dance with betty. anyway james saw her dancing with another boy and he got upset and maybe jealous, i think personally that’s why he started everything with augustine to almost “get back at her”. so i think when he saw her with the boy he stormed out making betty mad and causing a fight; which adds to him wanting to have a summer fling

Why did james sing in the song betty "plus I saw you dance with him"
Who the hell was betty dancing with? And if betty was dancing with someone else does that mean she and james weren't dating? Because if they were actually dating, that would mean that both james and betty cheated on each other...
I don't think James and Betty were dating the summer he spent with the girl from August. I think they were broken up. He sings about passing her house on his skateboard and not being able to breath...if they were dating at this point that line wouldn't really make sense. I think that maybe James thought he still had a chance to get back together with Betty after that summer, but he saw her dancing with another boy and that's when he knew that she knew that he had spent the summer with another girl. This was Betty's way of getting back at James or making him jealous. But that's just my theory. Instead of trying to get Betty back, James spent the summer with another girl even though he was dreaming about Betty the whole time. And in the song, he is explaining his side of the story and his feelings and hoping Betty will take him back.

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think illicit affairs in tied into the teenage love triangle. Illicit affairs is the story of a secret love affair. The lyrics say things like "make sure nobody sees you leave", "tell your friends you're out for a run", and "what started in beautiful rooms ends with meetings in parking lots". In August, the love story isn't secret. The girl pulls up to James in her car and says "get in, let's drive". The person singing illicit affairs needs to keep their affair secret, but the girl from August doesn't seem very secretive about her actions. I think the dynamics are too different for them to be written from the same person's point of view.
