What Does Ambroxan Smell Like? | What Is Ambroxan? | 5 Popular + Favorite Ambroxan Fragrances
In this video I discuss with you What Does Ambroxan Smell Like, What Is Ambroxan. And I also discuss 5 very popular Ambroxan heavy fragrances. So if you've been curious to learn about Ambroxan then this is your video.
🛑 So then what does Ambroxan smell like? Ambroxan is a synthetic note discovered in the 1950s to replace the use of the very expensive note of Ambergris. Ambroxan is a very long-lasting, very complex synthetic note on its own and in fact, it’s so complex there are a few fragrances out there that use the note of Ambroxan on its own as a whole fragrance. I personally find Ambroxan to have the characteristics of musk, amber, salt and woody notes all rolled into one. I find it quite choppy and course with the experience of wood shavings and I do not find it as smooth as other popular synthetic notes like ISO E Super or Javanol. Ambroxan is typically used as a base note in fragrances. 🛑
5 Ambroxan Heavy Fragrances That I Own And Enjoy Are:
    ESCENTRIC MOLECULES - MOLECULE 02 / ESCENTRIC 02
Ambroxan | ISO E Super, Ambroxan, Iris, Jasmine

Ambroxan with Oakmoss, Jasmine, Ambrette Seeds
    DIOR - SAUVAGE
    Ambroxan, Bergamot, Sichuan Pepper

    Ambrox Super, ISO E Super

I completely agree with your observations! Yes! Salty, woody for sure :-) I work with raw Ambroxan everyday. It's a fascinating materials. Why? because it has 2 main - seemingly contradictory facets. It is BOTH dry and aquatic. First, 1). Ambroxan is light woody, bone dry clean, white driftwood you might find on a beach. Very clean. 2). Ambroxan also smells of ocean, salt water and the tiniest bit of sea weed. This makes sense because ambroxan is a central molecule within Ambergris. Ambroxan is a warm material. It also a type of "white musk," or woody-amber white musk type material. It doesn"t change character while it dries and it lasts for days. You can think of white musks as "white noise," a wall of solid, pleasant sound...in the background. Ambroxan is not as warm as real Ambergris, but it is warm. So Ambroxan is both bone dry woody, and salty atmospheric. The salty atmospheric facet of Ambroxan makes it applicable to men's aquatic fragrances, aqua-colognes. Perfumers use Ambroxan in nearly any kind of perfume... but especially woody fragrances. Ambroxan brings warmth, structure, strength and diffusion to a wood perfume without changing the characteristic of other elements within a perfume. Again, it is 90% transparent, but its effects are felt. It make a fragrance richer, last longer and more powerful. I don't know of any commercial perfume that uses real ambergris. Many niche perfumes, like myself do, but its rarely if ever used in commercial perfumery.

Yes this glossary treatment for notes is a great idea!!! I´d be very interested in similar treatment for others like tobacco, vetiver, cardamon, myrrh, amber, incense, vanilla, cacao. Synthetic ones as well, e.g. Iso E Super. I'd like to have a large collection not of perfumes but of small samples of the actual natural notes themselves: some cedar wood, some cypress, some myrrh, amber, lavender, patchouli, iris, vetiver, moss, musk etc. etc. etc.
About Ambroxin, I do like the smell of Sauvage EDT. First impression from this fragance for me was that it immediately reminded me of the smell of some melon mojitos (drinks). Sauvage EDT I agree is kind of upfront and agressive, but fewer/distant sprays should be able to tone that down to everyone's taste.

Interesting, thanks for posting. Recently had my first experience with Sauvage which is a known (and slightly noxious) Ambroxan bomb, and also had a sample of Aventus whose dry-down smelled very similar though not as intense (due to Ambergris). I happened to have a sample of DS&D I Don't Know What as well, and it, while decidedly fresh, smells distinct from the other two. Is this likely due to the addition of ISO E Super?

I agree Ambroxan is coarse. Possibly it can get smoothed out by other notes temporarily, but when it is the primary note it has a bite to it. Perhaps this is more obvious to me because of the earlier, smoother notes in my current fragrance ( Sheikh al Shuyukh luxe edition) that contrast with it when it kicks in later as a base note. Thank you so much for this video, it's been remarkably informative on the subject. Cheers :)

They lie to your face so they could jack up the prices. Of course, real ambergris is more expensive and harder to find, but that doesn't make it bad, it is quite the opposite and I would LOVE my perfume to include it. However, I'm not insisting to have it and I don't mind wearing a perfume that uses any other ambergris substitute. BUT DON'T LIE ABOUT IT!

When I was wearing Another 13, someone told me I smelled of 💵 bills 😆
But I've been complimented a lot when wearing molecule 01 and Not a Perfume

Have you heard of Frequent Flyer from City Rhythm fragrances? That is my personal favorite base layer enhancer for fragrances. It definitely Amos up the projection and longevity of a scent.

Tried Juliette has Gun not a perfume, was not surprised when I couldn't smell it on my skin but after a few minutes the scent came out and I was able to smell it. Give it some time!

Prada Women the one in the rectangular bottle that came out in 2005 (I believe it was 2005) that one has huge amounts of ambroxan in it and I loved that smell so much it is addictive but in the airplane the perfume evaporated until it was almost empty which was interesting to watch. Haha and it also had that old fashioned pink pump ball on it which made it evaporate even faster. And it also had to do with the alcohol content even though it was the Perfume and not Eau de toilette. Some fragrances such as ambroxan are very volatile by themselves even in oil form but particularly in an alcohol base. So also for my skin I prefer oil based perfumes alcohol free and toxin free.

So I first bought Juliette Has A Gun Not A Perfume and have loved it from the her go, and it is so strong on me. I will smell myself 24hrs later (if I haven't bathed yet). So naturally I blind bought Superdose. At first I was completely anosmic to it besides the initial alcohol blast. I've had it a few months and I'm no longer anosmic to it. Its very strong, but a different scent on me vs the original Not A Perfume. I think Superdose is a tad more masculine, and has this mixed drink vibe the same way the JHAG Moscow Mule does. I am really enjoying Superdose now, and will love it mixed with somw of my go to summer fragrances. The OG is still my fave from them. It's extremely creamy on me.

I have Le Labo Another 13 and love it. I get pear in the opening but maybe it is apple? It's really sexy and delicious. Oddly, I am anosmic /can't smell anything with Juliette /Not a Perfume. I like/prefer the ambergris ingredient but am okay with ambroxan when I've been able to sniff it. Great topic! Another fun topic I'd like to hear about is the 'secret' or accidental accords that aren't listed as a note or aren't a note but is created by combining notes/accords. Thank you again for the glossary vids!

You are the best fragrance you-tuber ! This ambroxan video is of special interest. Can you explain why Molecule2 smells like alcohol wipes on me but JHAG Not a Perfume smells so good that I don't need the superdose ? Love your reviews !

Great video Sebastian, I would have put in PdM Percival, which has Hedione, as well as Ambroxan.

This was a very informative video....thank you! I absolutely love Not A Perfume. To me it is a soft and creamy, musky scent, and I can't get enough of it. I had a sample, then purchased the largest sized bottle. I also have Not A Perfume Superdose, and this one is not creamy at all, but comes across as a strong smell of alcohol....at least to me, anyway. I was hoping that it would be more like the original, but just a little 'louder', but it's not. I would love to try the others that you mentioned. Good to know which ones are heavy with ambroxan or cetalox. Thank you.

I got more of the ambroxane feel you describe now in Gaiac 10 than in Another 13.
The first few days I couldn't smell it at all. But after a few days it started smelling really nice. Now it has become my favorite perfume.
