  • Feeding roses in My English garden. I show how I feed and fertilise my two climbing roses. One is 'Dancing Queen' and the other 'Golden Showers'. They are climbing hybrid tea roses on a wall in my English Garden. They both have a fragrant perfume and repeat flower right through the Summer. I garden in Zone 9a.

    Another great video. I have a rambling rose myself called veilchenblau and also have a wild rose, rosa canina. I will try feeding the rambling rose very soon.
    It was swipe left not swipe right to find the climbing roses looking great in flower! And I like how the roses you have have the beauty of the double flower but still have some stamens for the bees in some of the flowers.
    I saw another good youtube channel called Darren Harwood who is a rose enthusiast, where roses were in a gap in tarmac like that. Its an interesting way to grow them.
    Finally, goodness me those rose roots are deep. That's good though the roots can be relatively deep but still can get enough moisture from rain and watering.

      Thanks Fauna Life! I used to have a 'dog rose' it loved my sandy soil and sprung up all over the lawn.
      Ha, thank you for the swipe correction 😉 I always get my swipes wrong!

      I do water those roses a lot - I pour a whole bucket of water each time over each of them.

      @faunalife2906 Před 3 lety

      @@paultsworld Your dog rose story reminds me of when I started gardening, and didn't know much about plants, I found what looked like a really unusual flowering plant growing in a clump by a road and uprooted one of the plants to take home (I know, I shouldn't have done that, you should just take the seed of wild plants if anything) . I planted it and the next year it flowered, I identified it and it turned out to be himalayan balsam! Soon the seedlings of it ended up everywhere in my border and I had to get rid of it. It's a pity it's such a problem because it has such a unique looking flower, it flowers for ages too and the bees love it.
      I hope I don't get a similar problem to you with the dog rose anyway. I also got a small single flowered peony (white with yellow stamens recently) to put next to the dog rose to go with it so I am excited to see it flower, and to see what insects enjoy the peony pollen.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  Před 3 lety

      You had a lucky escape with Himalayan balsam - it is invading all the banks along our rivers, 6 feet tall, it's a major problem. Your peony sounds delightful - I'm looking forward to seeing all the hover flies and bees on the flowers. There are quite a few bumble bees around already.

    Nice, informative video about how to feed your climbing roses. The soft pink colour of your rose is gorgeous 😱🥰 My current climbing rose is a nice pink (see my profile picture) and smells amazing. The first year it had it rough, aphits loved them. Even in late winter/early spring they were bunching up again on my rose bush😮😠 I have the feeling that the ladybugs are finally started doing their thing, but my new manure pellet feed helps a lot to. I needed to pause and rewind a little when I saw you putting that go pro thing in your mouth😮 But I am starting to really appreciate your humour😁👍🏻 It's very relaxing to watch your videos once in a while, it's entertaining, I learn something from it and it gets my excitement up as a new gardener, all at the same time 🥳🥰👍🏻👷🌿🌸🐝🦋🐦🐜

      Yes, go for it Carolina - I feel roses are tough and respond well to plenty of food and water. The David Austin Iceberg sounds ideal.
      You could always consider a large pot if you are nervous about the gap. Have another look at my Roses video and see my Paul’s Scarlet which has done well for over 10 years in a plastic pot. Good luck.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  Před 3 lety +2

      Glad you like the videos Jennifer. I would say go for it - get a climbing rose - perhaps look for one that is less vigorous and get the biggest (and deepest pot you can - roses like a deep root run).
      Just make sure it gets lots of manure and plenty of water, especially when established and growing well. When I water the roses that are in pots I literally pour a whole bucket of water in each time. Make sure there's drainage and maybe the pot lifted off the ground. My pots have slight built-in feet. Check out my roses video to see my roses and the types of roses I have in pots on the patio. Good luck. czcams.com/video/OKcjP1SINNs/video.html

    Your videos are teaching me that I don't feed my roses & shrubs enough! Could I ask you if your roses ever suffer with blackspot? And if so, do you have any remedies?! Thanks 😊

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello Willow Grove, I find black spot can happen at the end of the season. I don't have a remedy but believe it's best to always remove the leaves. I pick up any leaves that have fallen on the ground/soil and never put them in the compost. Yes, feed those roses and shrubs (and water!) - they'll love you for it...by flowering and flowering.
      I think it's best to give a really good feed in April then leave it till maybe July (I usually forget the July feed 😊) - but not feed after August.

    • @willowgrove631
      @willowgrove631 Před 3 lety

      Paul T's World thanks for your reply! Yes, the black spot does increase towards the end of the season, especially on my Albertine. I think you've hit the nail on the head here ... I've been giving a cursory feed in April most years, but have forgotten the July feed, so I guess a less healthy rose is going to be much more prone to diseases like black spot! I must be much more consistent with watering too! (light bulb moment here! 😂)
