    ABOUT SHADOWLAND
Shadowland combines multimedia, projected shadow play, and front-of-screen choreography in a wild evening of storytelling that is uniquely Pilobolus. The first shadow theater event of its kind to tour the globe, Pilobolus has performed Shadowland in 32 countries throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and The Americas where it has be seen by more than 1,000,000 fans. Pilobolus pioneered this new form of shadow theater in advertisements for Hyundai and at the 79th Annual Academy Awards where it performed, through shadow, iconic images of the films nominated for Best Picture. Shadowland is a natural evolution of Pilobolus’s groundbreaking experiments in shadow creation. Developed in 2009 by Pilobolus’s directors and dancers in collaboration with the lead writer for SpongeBob SquarePants, Steven Banks, and with music by American musician, producer, and film composer David Poe, Shadowland is a universal and intimately portrayed experience that is both intensely dramatic and comedic.
    THE STORY
Night. A teenage girl prepares for bed. As she falls asleep, the wall of her room mysteriously starts to spin, trapping her on the other side-a transfigured body stuck in the land of shadows. Unable to escape, the girl sets off on a journey of discovery. Strange creatures appear along the way-at once comic and evil, threatening and seductive. With Pilobolus’s acrobatic movement, the humor of cartoons, and the heart of a love story, Shadowland celebrates the power of dreams to help us discover who we’re born to be.
    ABOUT PILOBOLUS
Nestled in America's tranquil Northeastern hills, Pilobolus is more than a dance company; it's a beacon of groundbreaking creativity rooted in the spirit of '60s and '70s counterculture. Born from a 1971 Dartmouth experiment, Pilobolus ventured far from urban centers to focus on its avant-garde ethos. Quickly evolving from an all-male New England touring group into a gender-diverse ensemble, the company captivated audiences with its audacious fusions of strength, grace, and psychedelic imagery.
True to its collaborative origins, Pilobolus continues to challenge the boundaries of dance and theater. A tight-knit team of visionary talents fuels its annual creations, shaping a repertoire that amazes, amuses, and astonishes with what's possible through human form. In 2009, propelled by an irresistible urge to innovate, Pilobolus debuted composite shadow play at the 79th Annual Academy Awards and then entered a playful R&D phase, drawn to tell stories through this compelling medium. This led to Shadowland, witnessed by over a million people within its first five years and performed across Saudi Arabia, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Inclusivity extends to the company's broad network of collaborators. This ensemble of creatives spans various disciplines and includes figures like Andre Heller, Takuya Muramatsu, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Javier De Frutos, Inbal Pinto, Trish Sie and OK Go, Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Penn & Teller, Radiolab, Brian Greene and the World Science Festival, Danielle Rus of MIT's CSAIL, Maurice Sendak, Art Spiegelman, Etgar Keret, and more. Through these partnerships, Pilobolus ensures that its artistic voice is as multifaceted as the communities it engages.
Pilobolus isn't just a dance company; it's an ever-evolving artistic community that keeps redefining the potential of both dance and storytelling.
At the heart of Pilobolus is an unwavering commitment to education, reflecting the belief that everyone can narrate stories through their bodies and that all possess innate creative impulses. Guided by Pilobolus Teaching Artists, our workshops and masterclasses are far more than dance lessons; they are crucibles of creativity and collaboration for people of all ages and abilities. Pilobolus has created initiatives that aim not just to educate but to activate, unlocking the untapped creative potentials that we believe lie within everyone.
