    Nice video Skyler, brought back memories from the 90's when I used to have lunch there in the Burger King and bowl a game or 2 at the bowling ally - think it was like $1or $2 a game. That was when the USCG still had the island. It was like an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was very quiet and peaceful. Did they tear down the brick apartment building that housed the USCG personnel and their families? It was on the west side of the island facing the Statue of Liberty. They also had an armory inside of Fort Jay (got to work in there once) and a 9 hole golf course as well. Sad about the firehouse; I remember the engines staffed by USCG personnel too, they were red not yellow back then. That was all pre 9-11-01!
    My father reported there during WWII after his indoctrination into the US Amy Air Corps - when the US Army had the island. Once told me the first thing they were ordered to do was police the area for cigarette butts.

    • @SkylerFire
      @SkylerFire  Před rokem +4

      Very beautiful island and peaceful! They knocked down all the buildings. FDNY did training in them years ago mainly all the houses are left a lot of them can’t be used due to asbestos but at-least they haven’t knocked them down! In time they are gonna have to build some kind of firehouse or emergency service station for the island cause what they have now is just unacceptable.

      Those are KME Renegade chassis, however they have Duplex nameplates. They could have been a combination build or a re-chassis also, but they’re not Emergency One.
      As some of the more prominent apparatus builders began to go out of business during the ‘80s, KME was there readily snatching up the rights to certain chassis and designs to use for themselves.
      They did this with Maxim, Hendrickson, and Grumman to name a few. (hence the reason behind the KME Aerialcat, which used to be the Grumman Aerialcat)
      Emergency One did use a very similar looking cab design known as the Hurricane.

      Only the ferry operators and security are on the island every night. The rental cabins and tents are summer only. Around 40-50 cabins / tents so you figure up to 150 on the island at night tops

      Whomever the owners are. The FDNY must know who owns them now.

      These are old rigs used as reserve to cover the island on the weekends. No reason to put new apparatus there. This quarters dosnt cout as one of the 254 fire houses the FDNY has. The island is privately owned except 22 acres that belong to national parks.
