00:01Narita Gion Matsuri is a vibrant and historic festival held annually in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It usually takes place over three days in early July and is one of the most significant events in the region. The festival is deeply rooted in local culture and religious traditions, and it attracts both locals and visitors from afar.
History and Significance
Origin: The Narita Gion Matsuri has been celebrated since 1681. It is held in honor of the deity enshrined at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, a prominent Buddhist temple founded over 1,000 years ago.
Purpose: The festival originally started as a way to pray for bountiful harvests and protection from natural disasters.
Main Events
Float Processions (Dashi and Mikoshi): The festival features impressive processions of elaborately decorated floats (dashi) and portable shrines (mikoshi):
Dashi: These are large, wheeled floats adorned with intricate carvings, tapestries, and lanterns. Each float represents a different district in Narita, and they are pulled through the streets by teams of residents.
Mikoshi: Portable shrines carried on the shoulders of participants. The mikoshi represent the deity of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple and are believed to bring blessings to the people as they are paraded around the city.
Performances: Traditional music (ohayashi) and dance performances accompany the float processions, adding to the festive atmosphere. Participants often wear colorful happi coats and headbands.
Traditional Aspects
Decorations: The floats are adorned with elaborate decorations, including traditional Japanese crafts such as wood carvings, gold leaf, and silk tapestries.
Costumes: Participants don traditional attire, including yukata (summer kimono) and happi coats, enhancing the festival’s historical and cultural ambiance.
Cultural Significance
Community Spirit: The festival fosters a strong sense of community, with residents from different districts collaborating to prepare and participate in the festivities.
Religious Rituals: The Narita Gion Matsuri is not only a celebration but also a series of religious ceremonies aimed at invoking blessings and protection for the community.
Visitor Experience
Festive Atmosphere: The streets of Narita come alive with the sounds of traditional music, the sight of colorful floats, and the aroma of festival foods.
Street Stalls: Numerous stalls line the streets, offering a variety of Japanese street foods, souvenirs, and local crafts. Popular festival foods include yakisoba (fried noodles), takoyaki (octopus balls), and taiyaki (fish-shaped pastries filled with sweet red bean paste).
Interactive: Visitors can participate in the festivities, including helping to pull the floats and joining in the dances.
Highlights
Shinshoji Temple: The temple itself is a major attraction, and during the festival, it becomes a focal point for many of the activities. The approach to the temple, Omotesando Street, is lined with traditional shops and eateries, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Evening Illuminations: The floats are illuminated at night, creating a magical and picturesque scene as they move through the streets.
Modern Adaptations
Inclusivity: While maintaining its traditional roots, the festival has adapted to accommodate international visitors, with multilingual information and guides available.
Narita Gion Matsuri is a lively and culturally rich festival that showcases the deep traditions and community spirit of Narita. It offers a unique opportunity to experience Japanese culture, religious practices, and local hospitality.

Good to see the young actively participating to keep tradition alive
Would absolutely not happen in here(India), people would rather stay engaged in their mobiles... well, tbh, the Japanese do seem to have rather fun and grander spectacles in their traditions so that might also be a contributing factor
As I watch this, one must respect the Japanese as a great people and a unique country. Well done JE!
Up until now, I didn't know anything about this festival at all and am very pleased to see lots of local kids having fun during the festivities.
Please note that not just kimono and yukata, but also some special costumes for spring to autumn time festivals are worn all over Japan.
Thank Japan Explorer for this from an overseas japanese:)
I love Japanese peoples and I love Japan!
Japanese are very smart. That makes the new generation still interested in traditions that have been around for a long time.
Japanese women are the most beautiful humans on this earth!
Very cool festival!! ❤ Japan
Man I love Japan ❤ 🎉🇯🇵
🎶🎶✌✌🪂🪂
It makes me happy to think that there are foreigners who love Japan like you do.
Recently, a foreigner called Thomas Lockly did something very serious and quickly became a famous foreigner in Japan, and Japanese people reacted to his many comments about Japan and wrote two songs called Yasuke isn't to blame and The sin of Thomas Lockly. So when I see someone like you who loves Japan, I feel relieved from the bottom of my heart. I feel relieved and moved from the bottom of my heart when I see someone like you who loves Japan.
My fav town! They also had a Matsuri in late April with Narita communities pulling their floats thru town. A lot of fun and tradition involving kids, elders, priests and sports teams. Very cool
I love your answer when the girls at the stall ask you where you're from.
he knew exactly why they asked. He isn't born in Japan so they were curious where he is originally from. no ill intensions from their side, while he gave a douchebag duh-answer.
Why? So cringe

The wee one pulling the rope! You should get shirts made that have your youtube channel and the tours info on it, they can even print QR codes on them, so people you pass by can scan them and go right to your channel.
Great idea! Totally agree
👍 Very Nice 👍
I lived on Okinawa from 1975-1978 but I never saw this.
Okinawa has a massive tug-o-war festival in the streets of Downtown Naha.

very good🎉
멋지다!
Fun challenge:
1. Count the number of pieces of rubbish on the ground, divide by the number of people in this video (any wild guess will do).
2. Find another part of the world with a lower ratio. Wild ballparks will do again.
THAT MUST BE HARD WORK PULLING THAT FLOAT JE
真是個熱鬧的祭典
직접 가서 보고 싶었지만 이걸로 만족
Si el canal tuviese subtítulos en español, sería todavía más imponente. Me ha agradado, ¡saludos desde Madrid!

Hi J E great video the Japanese certainly know how to celebrate there culture and traditions ,both young and old and everybody in between seems to take part .
The police seem to have crowd control of to a fine art or are they more respected in Japan ?.
I could not even imagine any thing like that ever been allowed in England on the grounds of health and safety ,i did not see any safety harnesses on those chaps on top of those carriages ,they knew there capabilities ,Great stuff all the best .Alec.
Very few Urban people to cause Trouble in Japan
At least half of those people aren't pulling on the rope, just walking with it in their hand.

How beautiful and respectful the people of Japan are, the tourists are a disaster, just arrogance and lack of adaptation when visiting other cultures.
