“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel-all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

This is basically the Witch giving up. She has no more reason to live, and she finally realizes how completely backwards the world she lives in is: she's careful and follows the rules and gets punished for other people's mistakes, while they get their happily ever after. The way she sees it, in order to get what you wish, you have to be reckless and pass on the consequences to everyone else. She wished for her life to be back the way it was, before she got her beauty back, but it only got worse.

Better to be good than right. Just cuz you follow the rules doesn't mean everything will happen the way it should. Yes, the world is a dangerous place and even though she was right about it, her daughter Rapunzel is killed by the giant (in the theater version).

Actually, she is calling them Fake. While, they only live by a facade, like Red being a mischivious child but putting a innocent girl face. In other hand she tells "Im not good, im not nice, Im just right". In that, she says that shes not trying to fake anyone, shes True in her Nature. Her actions are neither good or bad? She stole a Child, who was raised with all her love and joy. She wants to give Jack to the giant, but, to save all of them. She dont put out any intentions that are not her true self. So its very powerfull, becuse, actually, she is the only one who is not covering her actions, she is actually proud of it, even her ingeunity by being stolen of the beans when she was younger. Her love of Rapunzel, and her unbotherness by the Village Folk. Who fear her just for being a Witch.

The witch is hands down the best character in the movie. She just tells it like it is. She's not bad or nice, which is true she's not the villian here, just another victim. She wants to give the giant Jack so that everyone else can live. And Her last curse is leaving the rest of the cast alone. Not giving them anything bad, just leaving them.

No, she's the villain. Thats the best part of this song, she's a hypocrite. She did many bad things: taking a child as a payment for stolen vegetables (seriously, no one with a right mind would say its fair. AND she said she will take the baby before the father took her beans), she imprisoned Rapunzel for 18 years, then banished her for being in love and blinded the prince.
Not to mention, she complains they all wanted their wishes no matter what while she did the same - she wanted her beauty back no matter how much harm would it do, and then she blamed Jack and wanted to sacrifice him.

@@TimothyRobert93 Yes, in big part due to the singing (When she is not going all out like in the sadder parts of the lament Bernadette Peters can be very flat. Hell in that song alone, hear how she says the phrase “couldn’t you listen?”) but also because the original play, much like a lot of Sondheim plays focuses too much in being hammy and comedic while the movie adaptations of his works allow themselves to be more dramatic to really pull out the darker undertones in the story and the songs.
And also because Meryl has the advantage that the songs were arranged pretty damn well. That longer “All right mother, when?!” Makes the climax a lot better imo than the original where it keeps going like the rest of the song.

    Oh, why bother?
You'll just do what you do
    It's the last midnight
    So, goodbye all
    Coming at you fast, midnight
Soon you'll see the sky fall
    Here, you want a bean?
    Have another bean
Beans were made for making you rich!
    Plant them and they soar
    Here, you want some more?
    Listen to the roar
    Giants by the score!
Well, you can blame another witch
    It's the last midnight
    It's the last verse
    Now, before it's past midnight
I'm leaving you my last curse
    I'm leaving you alone
You can tend the garden, it's yours
    Separate and alone
    Everybody down on all fours
    All right, mother, when?
    Lost the beans again!
Punish me the way you did then!

I think the artistic choice this movie made (vs the original cast production and other productions I've seen) that really got me was how they had the Witch holding the Baby right before this song. It made so much sense to me; the Beginning and the End, the Parent and the Child, Life and Death. The reason all of this has happened, and well, another reason all of this has happened. In the end, every fairy tale starts with a witch holding a baby that's not hers, raising it to inevitably make (so she says) the same mistakes as the parents did. The cycle is inevitable, life continues to live on despite the wolves and giants. Who is the Witch to argue with that?

But this is just the witch absolutely not caring about her fate anymore. Screaming at her mother because for once she doesn’t care what she’d do to her because she’s just so angry and frustrated with it all.

I really did think she's the one in the right in this story. Well, not kinda until the baker's father robbed her. If she wanted it to be fair and square, she could've just cursed the baker's father and not cause trouble any further for others (which resulted to this, where they blame each other for their own reckless mistakes or I'd say, greediness). And if it's not enough, then just demand them to fix what the thief had done by ordering them to lift the curse. And she also shouldn't have kept Rapunzel, which is an another mistake she made because it had a relation to the thief. But everyone is to blame here, the recklessness and greed just to have what you want and need, she's just right in this situation because she pointed the mistakes they all made (also including her), no one is the "good" in this story.

The whole Last Midnight sequence was a point that caused people to hate it due to the earlier plot change of (Spoiler Warning if you haven’t seen the actual musical) Rapunzel not dying. In the movie, Last Midnight is basically “I’m tired with you all, because all of you are really terrible people”. In the musical, it’s this as well BUT there’s also a darker edge of “my daughter is fricking dead, and I have no will to live anymore”. The ironic part is this was genuinely the role of “witches” throughout Europe in the Medieval Ages. Any famine, any act of misfortune that seemed out of place, any unfortunate “illness” on a woman or man, a witch was to blame. And in other words, it was a woman to blame. Meryl was originally sceptical because she didn’t like the stereotype of the witch being an evil old hag but she played it beautifully and put through the message. Women were blamed for all sorts of things, things they couldn’t control or had nothing to do with. Women were the scapegoat of the entire World, practically no country was exempt. There will always be an example of classic sexism and awful treatment of women. The symbolism of the witch can be interpreted in many different ways but the interpretation I love is that we have a powerful, strong and intelligent woman. A woman who hasn’t actually done any wrong except take someone’s child and cared for it better than they would have been able to since they were quite poor and in response to them stealing from her and corrupting her physically. A woman, who in all respects, was simply trying to get by in a life that hated her for something she was born into. Here, it’s her magic powers. The reality, it’s her vagina, her body, her very being of femininity. Despite all this, despite her lack of any flaws, society still found some way to hate her and discriminate against her and ostracise her. And for that, women paid the price. An easy and weak power in a country, women posed little threat in those times. And thus, were so easily destroyed. It’s really quite sad. Even here, she is being logical and fair. Trying to protect hundreds by giving up one. Contrary to the typical stereotype of women being too emotional and incapable of making hard decisions but she was the only one doing so. She did everything that people believe women cannot do or that people believe men do better. No matter all this, she still fails. There was a certain futility about it.

I agree with everything, but what does “women had to suffer many trials and tribulations” have to do with this film? My memory is a little rusty because it’s been while since I’ve watched this film, but wasn’t the witch hated just for being a witch? True, she was born a witch and was hated for being a witch, but that doesn’t have anything to do with sex or gender. Even back in medieval times, a witch could be a man or a woman, but they were mostly associated with women. Though, if the witch was born a male in this movie, it wouldn’t make much of a difference. This movie isn’t about a women that was mistreated for being born a women, it’s about the revelation on how backwards the world really is. To quote another comment on this comment section, the witch basically gave up after realizing just how heinous this world really is. You can follow all the rules, mind your own business, and still be punished for your neighbor’s misdeeds, while your neighbor gets their happily ever after. True, the witch is a freaking queen, and I love her so much. Like, UGH such an underrated character 😌, but again, this isn’t about the trials and tribulations that women had to go through in the medieval era, so why bring it up? Whether the witch is born a man or a woman has nothing to do with the plot of the movie. (Sorry for sounding a bit rude. I promise, I don’t mean any harm.)

She's the designated villain for all of this, the one that is considered the "bad one" even though they all made careless, selfish actions. The witch really gets something right by making them understand that being nice won't make them good and it ties so well into the general message of anti-manichaeism moral of the musical.

Isobel Keirs It's either that her mother killed her or that she actually ended up killing herself. It's a topic that's been up for debate since the original Broadway production - it's up to your interpretation which one you go with! X

Just gonna throw my two cents in, I honestly love this version better than any other. I think Meryl's interpretation nails the meaning of "The Last Midnight": it is about the witch, a character who has always been a scapegoat for people to blame their shortcomings on, being fed up about being blamed for everyone's errors and bad choices. People believe they can get what they wish at any cost and blame the consequences of their actions on outside agents or forces, the titular Witch from every fairytale. When you think of it, she was peacefully living her life when some guy barged in her garden and stole her greens, and in a matter of minutes her whole life changed with her having no control on the situation. True, it was her decision to take away Rapunzel as payment and curse the baker's family, but the baker's father's choices were his own. Just before this, she's trying to do what she believes is best for everyone, sacrificing Jack's life for everyone else's. We know they will defeat the giant in the end, but she doesn't. And when everyone starts blaming their mistakes on someone else's choices and ultimately identify her as the villain yet again, she's had enough of playing that role trying to do what's right. She realizes that humanity will never change and that the best thing to do is just to leave them to the fate they have chosen.

Why the hell didn't Meryl Streep win an Oscar for this???? She is outstanding, her acting truly shows her pinnacle as an amazing actress, and while being 65 yet managing to handle this scene like a 20 year old. She deserved the Oscar for this so much and so many of her other roles such as doubt, Julie and Julia and Florence foster Jenkins. I think someone must have cheated not to have Meryl win the oscars...
