    We played this in PA Regional Band in my senior year. There were four regions in the state, and the conductor of choice was Dr. James Dunlop of the Penn State Blue Band. He was a great educator, but he had no tolerance for musicians not knowing where they were in the score. I was first chair cornet and in Saturday morning rehearsal, when the band got to the trio at 3:00, I was mesmerized. The musicians were so good and the music was so beautiful that when Dr. Dunlop pointed to me at 3:35, I was staring at him, but my horn was on my lap. By 3:36 I was sure I was a goner. But he said, " Normally, I'd chew you out for something like that. But two weeks ago, at another Regional Band, the first chair did the exact same thing."

    I knew Clifton Williams and attended school in Miami, Fla with his children. He was a wonderful man and wrote many songs for our school including our Alma Mater. He wrote the Killian Concert March (named for our school) It was a beautiful piece. I especially loved Symphonic Dance #3. As I recall he directed us in this piece as guest conductor during one of our spring concerts. He was an amazing man. Such a loss to the music world the day he passed. This is a fantastic performance!

      I was in a mood for band music today and came across this recording, saw your comment at the top of the list. I played in several ensembles with Sarah Williams (French Horn) and remember riding to a concert with Sarah, her Dad was driving us there. I played in a couple of ensembles conducted by Clifton Williams, and also enjoyed playing his compositions. He was a pleasure to know and to play under his direction. As I recall he was always kind, enthusiastic, and encouraging. I see you went to Killian, was Dane Wills still the band director when you were there? (he was the first band director when Killian High opened)

    • @RandyAllen702
      @RandyAllen702 Před rokem

      @@herbvanderven5154 Yes - Dane Wills was my band director and remained a Killian several years after I left. I am not sure when he died, but his wife, Vicki was living in Georgia where she passed away several years ago. I graduated in the class of 73 with Clifton's daughter and Floutist, Helen Williams.

    • @RandyAllen702
      @RandyAllen702 Před rokem

      As an aside - this piece is an outstanding test of a student director - a task I enjoyed and excelled in back in school. The time changes and thematic differences in this music make it a challenge to direct.

      @herbvanderven5154 Před rokem

      @@RandyAllen702 So pleased to get your reply! It had been so long since you posted your comment I didn't know if you would still get a notification of my comment. I knew Dane and Vicki through the years that I was playing in the brass band at the Salvation Army Miami Citadel church, which is where I got my first instruction on playing trombone. When Killian first opened Dane invited me over to play with the Killian band, I think it was during a summer pre-season practice. Did you pursue music after high school?

    I knew Clifton Williams the composer of this piece. His daughter was a classmate of mine and he wrote our High School Alma Mater as well as Killian a full length concert piece named for our school. He was an amazing musician and his compositions are still favorites. We played many of his tunes and he was our Guest Conductor for several of our concerts. I graduated in 1973 from Miami Killian Senior High and only 3 years later Clifton Williams passed away.

    This song is so cool. My favorite part is the peasante e rubato part where the French horn blare and just blast. Being a French horn player....Oh my gosh....the first time I had to play that my throat and lips hurt so bad. Blasting is not easy. I can play it much better now but that whole blasting thing is no joke. Even the trumpet players were suffering too. I'm also a trumpet player so that wasn't a joke either. In the end it was all worth it. I played the third horn part by the way but I'm more of a first and second horn type.

    Hehe played this last year in my Highschool Concert Band :D
    I LOVE this piece, its so amazing. 1st clarinet is intimidating once you first look at it but its so amazing when you get it down :)
