For 200 years, since the first Draisienne running machine, the bicycle has offered us free climate-friendly travel, in the early days saving us from being over-run in dung, to today, reducing air pollution. Borne out of catastrophic natural disaster, this invention spawned myths and legends and fuelled the movement for equality of the sexes. The world would look very different without the bicycle.

Great video! I can honestly say that at age 66, I still get the same thrill riding my bike as I did when I was 10. One of mankind's greatest inventions, in my opinion!😎👍
Same here.
Spot on.
Everything in your reply I could have written myself except aged 68.
The only sport that can made us like a child again. Greetings from Brazil ❤
i'm 71 this year and walking is difficult, painful, slow and tiring. I no longer feel comfortable or safe driving so I sold my car and bought a bike. Now i can ride all over town with a feeling of independence and freedom i haven't felt since i was a kid. I love riding my bike. P.S. I really couldn't afford the car any longer anyway.
Better n cheaper than Tesla and plus the excercise!
When my dad came home with my first bike over 50 years ago my life really took off. Thanks dad.
I still remember the day over 50 years ago when my parents took me to the store and I picked out my bike and we brought it home.
Such a vivid image seared in my mind!
No other purchase in my life has given me so much joy!
I am 57 years old and rode 5000 miles on my bikes last year.
The world’s greatest invention! ❤️🚴🏻♂️
69 years old had to put a bafang midrive electric on my cause my knees makes noises, and to help with the hill, i like mountain cycling.
We've got the bikes. Now all we need is the infrastructure to allow us to ride safely, away from motor vehicles. I'm 75 and ride almost daily despite the risks of mixing it with death machines. It should not be like that.
I must say first time I have seen a show about bicycles my interest is my father repair bicycles his whole life he was the only one in the town of Rose Hall town in Guyana 🇬🇾 he love bicycles at that time The Raleigh bikes from England was the only brand we knew , he also refurbished the bikes when they get older, I wish he could see this documentary, when he came in Canada he got a job with Bloor bicycles to assemble the bikes for the store he was so happy because in North America there are no such jobs for repairing bikes and I also love bicycles because of my dad, he died two years ago and this documentary I dedicate to my father thank you for this I love it my logo is a bicycle 🚲🚲🚲🚲 thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏🇨🇦🚲🚲🚲
@retaparasram5439...a touching tribute to your father. Taking the time to share your memories suggest to me your dad was watching this show with you. Thanks very much for posting and I wish you the best in the coming years 🙏
This documentary has been a long time coming. I have been cycling off and on through out the years. I grew up in San Diego County in the 50s and 60s. The Beach Boys era. Once you hit 16, your cycling days were over. Could not afford the high cost of insurance, you were Sh*t out of luck. I started riding again when I got my first job at age 20. I lost my car 10 years ago, gave up my drivers license 2 years ago. I do not miss either one. To me, the bicycle is a new birth of freedom.
I'm 51 and still ride bmx every day. It keeps me very fit and never gets boring. I absolutely love it.🚲.
I love bicycle. I still ride bicycle where ever I go. It is so much fun to cycle than to drive a car or bike.
I too love bicycle
I only owned 1 simple road bike when I was teenager but now I owned 3 bikes-gravel, XC MTB and a steel tourer in my mid 40s. Everybody think I am crazy
As a long distance cyclist I can agree that bicycles are an amazing piece of technology.
How *long-distance*, Mr. Bangs?
@@brianbassett4379 100+ miles in less than a 24 hour time period.
150-200km/day distance

150/200km a day?
Sounds like you own a (high quality) racing bicycle.
Really enjoyed watching this I used to cycle a lot but at 58 I’ve got osteoarthritis and limited deflection of my knees,so I purchased an e-bike and I am back out there but having to have the saddle quite high because my right knee won’t bend past 90 I used to love watching the kids at Xmas on the new bikes sadly it’s a rare sight at Xmas nowadays it’s all game consoles and unfit kids ,let’s hope things turn round and the kids start asking for bikes again
It's crazy to think how many miles I've put on a bicycle. As an 80s-90s kid I'm one of the last of the bicycle paper boys. Now some one does the routes in a car. Try Sunday at 4am in January on a bmx bike with each paper weighing 5 pounds. But I had the sweetest wheels on my redline because of that job. Between my paper route and my lawnmower I was ballin
Same but on a Webco. Did you have to wear one of those dumb front to back canvas pouches that would strangle you after you'd thrown a few papers from the front, causing you to have to stop every few blocks and flip it around?
@@Sisyphusmedia yep. Try to put it on the handle bars and not crash
I delivered papers on a Redline too with Z rims
As an enthusiastic rider foe 10 years, I can easily say that cycling has proved to be the best kind of exercise so far for me and other members of our cycling group.
This humble machine is a low impact exercise we can go for daily. I started cycling after the gap of around 30 years and know I feel the healthiest than when I was 30 years or so.
For me this relationship with cycle is same as people have for their horses. My typical monthly transport activity looks like this, car 50 kilometres, scooter 200 kilometres and cycle 1200 kilometres.
I think anybody at any age start cycling.
The bicycle is a perfect invention for me. I use a regular and an E-bike daily.
My regular bike for close disances like to the grocery store.
My E-bike for distances up to 100km. The battery has 100km of range.
Pedal away on a bike and you are immediately transported back to the kid in you 🤗
Who would have believed that the pneumatic tyre was invented by a Scottish vet called Dunlop to help his sick son to have a more comfortable convalescence by bike! Fantastic!!!
Truly enjoyable episode! Given the disgusting times we live in, this presentation was indeed a much welcomed change of pace. And, I will add, it took me back to the 1960's and to my beloved banana bike. In many respects, life was so much better back then. Thanks very much for posting and be safe 🙏
I just picked up my first e-bike this weekend, glad your video touched on them. Did you know on avg e-bike riders ride more often & go farther than they would on a non-e-bike? ❤❤❤
Riding a bicycle makes people healthy and happy. Driving cars does the opposite. Cars are for long trips even then I would prefer fast trains if any existed in my neck of the woods .
Bicycle is my love. Wonderful topic. If you've got a short version, it would be great for promotion. I often share your longs and shorts. Love your work!
Thank you so much for your comment🫶🏻🚴🏻♀️
Great video, but an error: not all pedal assist e-bikes have the motor in a hub, a growing number of them have the motor between the pedals. In fact, these “mid-drive” e-bikes are almost always pedal assist, whereas hub-motor e-bikes often have a throttle to allow the rider to not pedal.
Thank-you...for showing this Documentary....Honestly....Great Inventions Makes life Easier...(Still Riding my Bicycles...after 50yrs old...)....
Riding every day at 76yo. Learned seventy years ago.
probably the most underrated invention ever made, the amount of distance you can cover on a bicycle is surprising , keeps you healthy , no fuel needed, doesn't create traffic, one of the most cost effective modes of transport.
Not forgetting the impact on the gene pool. English villages are roughly three miles apart, so the furthest field was half that distance, giving an acceptable time to reach. It was usual to find a partner no further than the next village. The bicycle quadrupled that.
I enjoyed that, I do chuckle at "wheel builders" though' they love to make people think its some kind of dark art 🤣(its quite easy)
You are out on the attribution of the safety bicycle. James Starley did indeed build the high-wheeler for which the term 'penny-farthing' was coined in 1871, but it was his nephew, John Kemp Starley who invented the Rover safety bicycle in 1877.
the BICYCLE Saved my LIFE
Bicycle sure is a joy machine it keeps u fit n fine and is so versatile with its options. The more u cycle the more happier u r . It also helps u accumulate social currency! What else it helps u save money and works without fuel. A great non polluting machine. What else u can ask for!
2 things i've always enjoyed .... coasting downhill and sailing. gravity and wind provide a real thrill. fast quiet and free. i can kick back for a bit and imagine what it must be like to be a bird and just glide ....
This is by far my most favorite video I’ve ever seen on YT! 🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️
thanks genius first discovered and invention the bike avoiding fare costs, no air pollution and helping strengthen the body❤
Awesome vid mate. Going to rebuild my old Specilized Big Hit Pro so i can compare the ride to my 2024 Santa Cruz V10.
As a bicyclist I can say that this documentary does not use the words "Industrial Revolution".
I still enjoy riding almost every day.🚴🏻♀🚴🏻♀
Bikes are awesome! I love them. My car is awesome! Neither will replace the other. It's awesome when places are designed so you can do either in harmony with the other.
Superb video !!!
the final biker with sneakers😁😁😁
Love bicycle 🚲 ❤️ 😊
Great video I love that
I get motion sickness, and it was worse when I was younger. Didn't matter, bus, car, train, plane, and especially boat. However, I never got sick on a bike. Now I can tolerate all means of transportation, but I enjoy bicycling the most. The cargo bike is my favorite, but i have a touring bike and an MTB or "squishy" bike too. I am thinking of an electric but I am not quite there yet. It might make me feel sick.
No it wont. Still a bicycle just easier. I have a vintage, adventure and now an emtb. They're all fun
The slow puncture in my car tire means I may as well take the bicycle for short journeys as I'll be standing there with a track pump getting almost as much exercise anyway.
Beautiful video
great documentary! It's amazing how bycicle pneumatic tyres became essential for car's development too. 15:44 some gif material there. 36:57 yup, I know of people who use bycicles to help with their mental health
75 million bike users and 50 million bikes.. People tend to share their bikes, interesting fact. Overall, very informative, thankyou!
❤ informative...
Nicely produced. This lifelong avid cyclist enjoyed it. Thank you.
Like many documentaries these days, it devolves into an environmental scold session and makes dubious economic claims, but on balance, a great presentation.
wonderful vedio ❤❤❤
So bicycle development leapt fro Von Dreiss to the ‘Ordinary’ (Penny Farthing)? No mention of Scottish blacksmith and inventor of the first crank-driven bicycle, Kirkpatrick MacMillan, who rode his machine from his home near Dumfries to Glasgow in 1850.

I love how the bicycle was invented at around the same time as the machine gun. Humans

Steering wheels and door knobs are not examples of axles they are examples of spindles.
I began riding at a young age. By 1981 I developed of of my cities largest paper routes in the mountainous region taking on hills as rites of initiation escaping the confines of a religious sect by working and staying free of violence. This is interesting for it's wisdom on how mobility and freedom aspire in various segments of history. The modernist controversies of the conservative religous movement and means to find reason in today's world, especially as a individual who was inside Enron for many years brings to mind health and focusing energies reminded of climate and the human impact of fossil fuels. I've often viewed electric bicycles as sacrilegious for myself having a DIY experience lugging news papers peddling in the mountains seeing challenges ahead as conquests that empower one's spirit in a discipline of goal setting. It's nothing for me to view 5000 miles peddling in a season and on a whim have practiced 'adventure capitalism' dumping every thing for vacationing doing 300 miles on a road bike. Promoting cycling brings the reminders I escaped long ago as a child busily working his way on a bike delivering the news to customers in my community.
Seria ótimo ter esses maravilhosos documentários dublados em português do Brasil, mesmo que por IA.
@Get.factual could you please upload a video about the invention of the typewriter.
This is supposed to be a documentary, horses eliminate way more than a liter of urine a day. A human urinates more than that by far.
I think they're taking the piss!!
0:00 to 1:31 perfect intro, keeping the name of the invention till the very end!
the environment and there fore us would benifit if we went back to using the bicycle rather than cars.
😊😊we need to bring back our bicycle factory 🏭 to America 🇺🇸 start building the bikes here again for food no more over season we need jobs in American ❤❤❤❤
Agreed, but will US citizens pay more for something made here? They haven’t proven willing to do that for so many other items, sadly.
Worksman Bicycles is the oldest bike company still here in the US.
Just a reminder. In europe you guys dumped your chamber pots out the window.
What did you say for heads up?
I believe it was Gaurdez l'eau!.

I love bicycle on road.
In actual fact, a chain driven bike is less efficient than the direct wheel drive.
…but not as effective. To propel a bike, for both acceleration and speed, you need watts which is a function of the cadence and torque applied to the pedals. Most humans are most effective at a cadence of 60 to 100 rpm. Chains allow gears whereas the direct pedal does not.
Up until the last 15-20 years, this documentary is correct that bicycles were once simple machines. Electronic shifting, hydraulic disc brakes, internal cable routing, integrated headset/stem/handlebars, needless applications of carbon fiber and plastic...it's actually a minefield purchasing a new bike these days if you want a bike that's easily repairable and without annoying standards.
It's SILLY to think that the bicycle will take over all of transport.
When you want to carry LARGE & HEAVY loads, even a short distance, the motorized vehicle is much better!
And surely, for GREAT DISTANCES and LARGE CARGO or MANY PEOPLE - the car and other motorized vehicles is the way to go!
Does anyone involved in the making of this video even ride a bike on a regular basis?
Bicycle‼️
Bicycle‼️
I.. 🫵🏾already know😉‼️
The Love Machine 😅
Easier on the knees than jogging:/ better transport. Bit of maintenance and theft prevention. Cheap bikes less attractive to thieves but still work ok thus practical.
having a car , cost average of 100euro , per month whiteout the fuel add 10 euro per day in fuel is total 400 just to drive small distance under 10km n city ,and i dont have add police tikets or parking fee
I like recumbents
E-bikes could be an excellent option if the disposal of their battery was not so harmful.
Heavy and expensive, they steal from you healthful exercise. Just how badly does anyone need yet one more damn thing to plug in?
The lithium in scrap batteries is highly sought after, and easier to process than mining the virgin material. An average ebike battery contains about $50 worth of scrap lithium.
@@GNMi79 I always put my battery in the oven when I charge it. The people that have problems are the ones that get batteries from dodgy vendors, don't use the right charger, or do something stupid like bypassing the BMS.
an old battery contains the perfect mix of resources to make a new battery.
Great stuff...but it seems to an old jerk like me that some of the experts are just stating the obvious...m.aybe it's me.
i added a pan to my bike to make the frycycle.
1,500k so far this year on my e-bike! More then my car.
Did anyone else notice those French troups at 29:05 in the video seem to have a folding bicycle? Thay would have been in 1914
I did, funny they did not mention that. I believe they were used in both World Wars.
The bike at 16.11 is the same bike on my profile picture, well not literal
4 kg???
E-bikes do not charge themselves as you pedal. They have to be recharged by an electrical outlet. The batteries aha r limited recharge-ability, so must be replaced. The batteries use a lot of environmentally sensitive materials and take a LT of energy to produce. Not carbon neutral at so, and wasteful.
An ebike is a sensible piece of transportation if you're using it to replace a car. The lithium that goes into making an EV could instead be used to power about 100 ebikes. It's not a perfect technology, but it's a lot better than the existing alternatives.
Some are starting to use regenerative braking. Some actually will recharge the battery with the idea you can pedal more than necessary (like on flats) and then use tHe stored energy for tackling hills.
@@douglasmckinley-sr1507 Regen is only available on direct drive hub motors. Most hub motors on the market have a set of planetary gears with a freewheeling clutch to prevent parasitic drag. It's because of that clutch mechanism that planetary geared hub motors aren't able to provide regen. I have seen some people build bikes that combine the two different motors. Geared hub motors provide better off-the-line torque, where as direct drive motors are more efficient at speed, and have the option for regen.
@@GNMi79 most people have a cadence and power output they are comfortable with. This level of watts may be more than needed to propel a bike on level ground or going downhill. The extra watts could be stored in the battery and used when accelerating or going uphill. Put the bike on a kickstand (so the rear wheels spin freely) and you could recharge the battery while standing still.
@@douglasmckinley-sr1507 few
I've ridden two wheels for over 50 years. Road, mountain, bmx, moto, and now I have 2 ebikes which I ride almost every day. I have a great invention for cyclists all over the world to make people feel at ease to adopt bikes which is not out there. Once you hear what I have, your light bulb will go on.. Any serious investors out there??
I'm 67 and I ride my human powered road bike a lot. One of my regular rides climbs up tp 4300ft, 2500 ft vertical for me. It is hard but I love it. The feeling to do that under m own power gives me a great sense of accomplishment. It irritates me that these e bike riders with their heavy and fast bikes think of themselves as cyclists and take up space on the bike trails sometimes even pulling trailers with their kids in it. Those people are oftentimes fat and out of shape and they don't pay attention to their surroundings. Some riders find ways to eliminate the speed limiters and they go way faster than even the fastest cyclist. Some of them even use their cell phones while they are riding. I think those e-bikes are motorized vehicles and they belong on the road.
Except... Motorists who are in the seats of power have passed laws limiting E-bikes power and speeds, while allowing themselves the freedom to buy as powerful cars, speedy as they like, large as they want?
Da Vinci made first bicycle ,it is true but as always new things are oftenlly discriminated or designated as not important or to stupid for average needs.
Da Vinci did not make or design a bicycle.
Trek is the best bicycle brand ✨️ 🚲
HARDLY!

I have to ask if you are sure of who really invented the bicycle? There is an ancient temple in India that shows a bicycle depicted on the wall that is hundreds of years older than the 1800s. So who was first to use 2 wheels?
Fake, the bicycle picture was added to the temple around 100 years ago.
Can't walk? Let them cycle.
e bikes are not cheap and are a frequent target of thieves
and then along came the automobile and ruined everything

Poorly researched video, the current speed record for a non-assisted human-powered cycle is held by Todd Reichert at 144.17 kph, set in 2019 at Battle Mountain. NOT someone being sucked along in the draft of a specially modified, gas-powered vehicle.
Show me that 4kg bike

here in the Philippines, bicycles are less favored and less considered by our government, no proper bike lanes. Cyclists are mostly being bullied by car owners and drivers
You need to educate more people, then demand from government.
