- Holocure Save the Fans is the best free bullet heaven / Vampire Survivors Like of the year on Steam and one of my favorite games this year. I'm aware Asmongold covered it, but I've reviewed too many of these games to not also shout it out. It's the best free game on Steam, and you should probably play it.

It's hard to go back to other clones after this game, even on other 90%+ rating in steam. The lackluster, the "cheapness" is much more apparent even if they are literally cheap. It's almost unfair for these clones to put holocure in the same subgenre, lol.
Holocure is one of the best of the genre which is nuts since it's a free fanmade project. The only other Bullet Heaven game I would put on par with it is Halls of Torment.

For the record, if you want to be a vtuber, you can be 100% yourself, 100% playing a character, or somewhere in-between. It's a matter of preference. The content can also be anything you want. The only unifying factor is that they use animated models in place of a facecam.

As long as you're consistent. You can't switch spectrum at the drop of a hat - if you ever want to change your "persona", you need to do it gradually and it has to feel earned instead of convenient.
A lot of controversies came from people dropping their real belief expecting people to be welcoming of it as if it's another part of the kayfab and others break characters in such a jarring way for their audience, that's usually the core of a lot of vtuber controversies IMO.

The developer (Kay Yu) can certainly make money from the game, he just has to negotiate a commercial license with Cover. Plenty of big companies have licensed Hololive characters for profit, including Sega, Capcom, Konami and Taito.
Kay Yu has stated he chose to not make money from HoloCure, because he wants it to remain a work of love, a present to the fans and the Hololive talents, and a hobby. He said his professional occupation (animator and graphics designer) already makes him enough money.
When you say that he "can't make money from the game" you're denying his own agency on the decision. If Kay Yu has no choice then he's not showing good will towards the community, that's just how the cookie crumbled. If he has a choice, then he chose to sacrifice profits to benefit the fans.
As far as we know, Kay Yu has good relationship with Cover, and Cover likes the game (they even posted picture of Cover staff playing it in their computers) so there's little reason to believe he's lying to us when he said it's his own decision to keep the game free.
To add to that, Cover did approach him for some form of monetization/fee/commercialization of Holocure. But he rejected the proposal. Cover is acutely aware of Holocure and wants to support him financially. They are working on other things though, just not Holocure.
When the game was released on other websites before on steam I knew it will be popular due to the game looks fun.
Just wanted to add that cover already allowed him to monetize the game and publish it on steam, and as you mentioned Kay Yu does not want to monetize the game and just wants it to remain a passion project, from a fan to the fans. He did take the offer to publish it on steam without the monetization.

Another thing to add is that Kay Yu has done work for Hololive. Before Holocure's initial 0.1 release, he did animation for the music video 「Q」 by Gawr Gura and Mori Calliope of Hololive EN. And the interesting thing always was that Q as a music video had a sort of plot where Gura and Calli ended up fighting their own fans; which always seemed like it was the idea that birthed the setup for Holocure. And back in v0.1 where all we had was Stage 1, it was even more apparent because the Q-version enemies and double boss show up at the 15 minute mark. (They're still there as of v0.6 as well.)
Fun fact: Hololive actually reached out to Kay Yu(dev) and asked if he wanted to monetize the game, he said no and that he wanted to keep it as a hobby, not a job. So it isn't that he can't charge for it, he doesn't want to.

The reason why vtubers create wacky/supernatural character backstories is threefold:
1. It's marketable. It makes them easier to identify and remember. You probably wouldn't be able to distinguish 50 different generic anime girls, but 50 different fantasy creatures or animal hybrids (e.g. grim reaper, robot, sheep girl) would stick out a lot better.
2. A lot of vTubers find it more comfortable to talk about their personal lives if they just change a couple words and make those stories part of their "backstory". They don't want to doxx themselves, but they also need to spend several hours a day talking about interesting things, so it's a tricky balance to strike.
3. It's fun. Playing a character is fun, and coming up with an OC is fun. Not to mention it gives people a lot of ammo to joke around with the vTubers without having to know everything about their personality (such as when a gemstone vtuber started getting jokingly threatened by a blacksmith vtuber, or when a nut-obsessed Squirrel vtuber started making NNN videos)
That's the beauty of this game; while it's a hololive fan game full of hololive references, you can also just as easily understand most of its characters as standard fantasy concepts from the phoenix warrior to the blacksmith, the rain shaman, the priestess of an eldritch god, the wielders of natural concepts, the dagger given human form, the zombie ninja, the smug witch, the catgirl who really loves food, and whatever the fuck is going on with Haachama at any given time.
I think before a full version release,
Someone should volunteer to write Quick Lore of each girl for the game... so they at least get the grasp of character identity.
@@ivanrampengantechnically Hololive’s website has lore for each of them you can find but that’s mostly just sort of the default backstory that they debuted on CZcams with (meaning, this is the character Cover corp gave to their talents, who then took it from there)
Many of the references in this game involve something infamous they did on their channels, like that time Haachama literally ate a spider in her ramen on stream. It’d be pretty useful for each of them to have a lore paragraph on their character page that’s actually written by a fan like the rest of the game rather than being that copy pasted basic backstory

I always sum up this game in my head as "what if all the lessons learned about addictive gameplay, unlock systems, randomised rewards (gacha) and in-game currency were used in a game that isn't trying to lure you into opening your wallet".
I love it, it's made for fun, to have fun, for no other reason than for having fun, it's a value proposition that the gaming business cannot compete with because it's not part of the business, it's free in every sense of the word, no strings attached.
I love Vampire Survivors for many of the same reasons, the entry fee is low to the point of not existing and the rest is fun, it deserved to win people's game of the year in an industry full of greed and disappointment, though while additions to the game have been frequent and vast i am a Hololive fan, and having the characters in the game be characters i'm very fond of outside of the game i can't help but make HoloCure my favourite though it's not just because of that, character specific skills and abilities add an identity and variety to the characters that's missing from VS, and having absolutely everything in the game be a reference to something i love is just the most icing on the cake anyone could ask for, THEN THEY ADDED FISHING AND MINI HARVEST MOON...
tl;dr it's 10/10 and absolutely my GOTY, it's already been my GOTY before now, but i'm using its launch on Steam and the massive ID update as an excuse to make it GOTY again.
The game has a gatcha system that doesn't charge irl currency. Lmao. WHAT and HOW?
@@nulnoh219 COD WW2 actually did a similar thing, for playing and achieving simple challenges they'd reward you with loot crates which you could open... for free, either they were testing the concept or it was a mistake because i unlocked TONNES of stuff in that game without spending a penny it was very rewarding, obviously they'd never be that generous again but it's one of the reasons that game was so addictive.
Rewards used to be free, now you have to pay for them.

the game updates usually add 1 new stage and turn the previous new stage into hard mode. and about 9 ish characters per update.
according to kay, the next update is gonna be huge. he also always teases the next update somewhere in the game.
the first few were just the main game so the updates were teased on the gacha screen as silhouette characters.
the next update is teased in holohouse with the bunnies down south.
Now that I was waiting for the casino. And possibly new 3rd gen cast and new stage, new item, new weapons, new achievements, or possibly new mechanics. While grinding all of my Oshi max in fandom. And after that I will spent my time fishing
next update may take longer though as kay yu said he'd be resting for a bit and focus on his job. IIRC he's working on Bleach TYBW, Mushoku and the new episodes of One Piece right now.
I think he mentioned that the next update should be in 2024 but if he feels like it he may try to push at the end of 2023.

I saw my buddies playing this one day on discord, I downloaded it myself and now I’m addicted I also frequent Hololive streams(IRyS is my Idol).
They CAN charge for the game with a patreon on something like that they just chose not to charge anything. Holo talent always say that the main creator is a mad man for not taking any money from it and he didn't even credit himself in the games credits
Ive played most of the survival games started wayyy back with solomans boneyard, and id say holocure is the best player experience of any of them. soulstone survivor's or whatever that one is called thats still in beta is likely a 2nd
Absolutely amazing what someone with the will to make a game about VTubers can end up putting out the best game in the genre.

@MugThief vtubers are just CZcamsrs. It's not that complicated. Hololive has the best. Not just Japanese they have about 15 EN. Gawr Gura is Hololive English and she has 4.3 million subs on CZcams. One of their biggest stars. Gawr Gura famously got a million subs in 35 days. Nobody knows where Gawr Gura is from but it's Virginia-ish. In that area. Calliope Mori is Texas. Amelia Watson is UK. Bae is Australia. Kroni is Canada. Kiara is Austria.
Hololive also has an Indonesian branch and used to have China but there was too much drama.
With the steam release a new weapon tier was added as well. Like the video said, if you have 2 compatible weapons you can collab them, but also if you have the right collab + item combination and you have reached lvl 50 then you can create a super collab. There are currently only 4 super collabs available and you are limited to 1 per run.
Character play helps VTubers the same way Kayfabe helps Wrestlers. Building a lore brand aids in the imagination of the fans, and gives the streamer something to talk about.
Oh yeah idk if you already knew about this or not, but those 38 characters.. are just halfway through 😂 There will be many more New Characters, New Stages, and HoloHouse updates with each New Patches incoming. You gonna be in this game for a loooonggg time for sure
Half way... for now. When Kay yu is done with Re Gloss, there will probably 3 or 4 new gens lol, not even counting Holostars.
All you really need to become a Vtuber is a 2D or 3D model. You can play it very straight and just be you, you can go wild on the character and go insane with lore and stuff, you can go middle of that and be let's say "you, but virtual everything" or "you, but dog boy". There is even a Vtuber called "Airshow" that is literally just a fighter jet.
Hololive Vtubers fall more under the category of more "character than person" so to say, but that is definitely not to say that they are "fake" as since Hololive is "Audition based" then the characters more often than not very much suit the person behind a lot, especially since they stream a ton they are not expected to uphold a character constantly, it's more background that serves as a base for fan and official content.
Hololive Vtubers are also usually referred to as "Talents" since Hololive is technically "50% Idol agency 50% Comedians" as the meme goes lol, and all the music in the game are remixes of Hololive Songs (In fact, Kay Yu animated the music video for the song "Q" by Mori Calliope and Gawr Gura). And they are a very strong bunch when it comes to music I definitely recommend checking out the OST compared to the original songs.
And one small detail, you mentioned only Japanese talent, however Hololive also has English and Indonesian branches.
just wanted to comment, the stat bonuses for pulling dupes stops at 21 copies. tears can also be used to raise those numbers as well. all said and done, it'll probably take about 1 million coins to max out the entire roster. in contrast maxing out the shop costs 1.5 million
Its not much when you have silver and gold (2-3 quality levels of 4) workers in Holo House, who bring you ~50k after every run (or even more if you stay a bit for fishing and other stuff, and collect money second time before exit), so you can grind out all bonuses before you even try all characters. (It was probably much longer before Holo House regime was added in the game)
I've been a Hololive fan for a few years now, and I've been playing this since the first public demo was released last summer. The sheer amount of work put into it - the sprites, weapons and stats systems, fandom references, etc. is amazing. As a game reviewer with decades of experience, that's not something I say lightly. Seeing it grow and become popular with the mainstream gaming audience has been such an interesting experience. Can't wait for the next update.
Reminder that this game is only 0.6 which introduced the Indonesian branch to the game and the house part of the game
There are still other branches and gens (the groups they originally came from) to add, and there is going to be even more (by my guess) in the house due to the construction. I would have to guess there are going to be even more characters and content. I'm ready

The only hololive branch that is technically fully missing is China, but it's extremely unlikely that will happen.
My guess is that the release schedule will be JP Gens 3/4, then JP Gens 5/6, probably EN Advent, and then whoever has come out in the meantime like the recent new group (do they count as a separate branch?) and maybe things like potential EN/ID 4th Gens.
Holostars would also be an option, but probably only at the very end.

My guess is that Coco will definitely be in it, Rushia maybe, too despite controversy but Aloe will be really hard to put into the game because there's almost no content of her.
You can be a vtuber just being yourself, if you really wanna stretch the definition you can say the animation youtubers like Jaden or Odd1sout are technically vtubers or PNGtubers (depending on if the transition between faces are fluid or not, so something like TheRightOpinion could be closer to PNGtubers whereas someone like Andrei Terbea is closer to vtubers). Nowadays it usually refers to streamers though, basically if you're streaming without your face but with some avatar in its place somewhere on the screen you could technically already be a PNGtuber, if that avatar is rigged and moves with body motion capture or at least can emote via pre-rendered animations or something, voila vtuber. No fake persona necessary, just like streamers, or maybe content creators/online influencers in general. Some put on personas, some don't. It's a personal preference thing.
As for the anthropomorphic vtubers thing yes, there are tons of relatively anthropomorphic vtubers, and there's even the fleshtuber joke to refer to all non virtual youtubers as fleshtubers or something, so technically you're a fleshtuber, the most anthropomorphic of all vtubers or smth.

Great game. I download because I knew Hoshimachi Suisei and some others singers vtuber. Sometimes I get the in-jokes, sometimes not. In most cases I know more about hers musics than hers streams because i dont speak japanese. Suisei, Rissu ,Towa and Moona are my favorite singers.
As someone who was there day 1, it was already a quality little game. In the span of, what, about a year(?) it has become something so incredibly deep for what it is worth.
Love that game. The grind is very real, yet it’s pure Arcade fun!
I’m glad the name “Bulletheaven” is gaining traction. It sound much better than “Survivors-like.”
I still prefer to it as bullet hell because lets be honest it is the same dodge incomming enemies/bullets while trying to shooth as much of it down as possible. Bullet heaven comes from wanderbot and his idea of "I shoot alot so I am the boss" kind of thought which I flat out disagree with bullet hells have been a thing since supernintendo and earlier
I booted this game yesterday, my RNG was goated as I got the characters I wanted from the first attempt. And by God it's incredible how balanced and varied the playstyles can get. Zeta was a blast provided you understand to KEEP MOVING and stack damage sources and crit chance.
I can't believe I paid zero money for this game.
Halu + Piggy Bank + Super Chatto Time + Greed Stamp is a massive money grind no matter your character. Add to that Reine with the Idol Costume and you can walk home with a hundred thousand holocoins on normal mode 1, let alone any level with a coin multiplier.
The best is that Kay Yu plan on add all the HoloPro cast. He dont care about all the fuckers that dont want to see HoloStars(Males Vtubers) on the game.
With time we gonna see all the girls and boys on the game and I´m excited to see it.
Also, he is working on other Hololive fangame... this dude is something else lol

There is a worry that talents who have either graduated or have been terminated might not get added, but there has been word that everyone will make it in, so there is hope for Kiryu Coco, Uruha Rushia and of course, Mano Aloe (difficult as that one might be due to a near complete lack of content)

Like others have said, the only thing you need to be a vtuber (virtual youtuber) is an illustrated (2D or 3D) model. It doesn’t even need to move or articulate. As long as you are using a non-live action avatar on screen, you are a vtuber. The term was coined by Kizuna Ai, widely considered to be the grandmother of modern vtubers.
Also, while the company is Japanese, Hololive also has English and Indonesian language branches. There are multiple American, Canadian, and Australian talents in the company.
One of the ideas behind vtubers that I think others kind of gloss over, is that the advantages to being a vtuber is that you maintain a bit of a veil between your private life and that of your followers/fans, so you reduce the negative impact of parasocial relationship to a degree, but there's sadly still quite a bit of that. And you get the advantage of some more anonymity which prevents trends like stalking or swatting.

As you talked about, even with zero knowledge or interest in Hololive, the amount of gaming fun to be had here for free is quite impressive.
and it will continue to be updated with more content and mechanics because there are still Holo members not in the game yet and Kay Yu wants to keep going.

Also this game has some hidden characters references, for example the cutting board(weapon) will dealt more damage if a flat chest character use it while bouncy ball(weapon) will be stronger if you use a big chest character
The music tracks are chip tune versions of Hololive original songs. For examble, the intro music is based on the song Shiny Smiley Story, and the newest stage's bgm is Hololive Indonesia's song ID:entity.
Missed Super Collabs where you combine a collab item with a passive item and Fandoms which you unlock through completing and gaining xp which can unlock passive skills from the get go.
I've been playing since the 0.2 version of the game, and it just properly hit me now that Kay Yu worked on River City Girls. Dang
For me, the 2 reasons why this game is so good
1. He created this game out of love for the vtubers and their fans, not as an 8-hour shift job
2. He released each version of the game when he is happy/proud of it, not when some corporate boss ordered him to release it on a set date so that their fiscal year earnings look better for the investors
The second point is what's the greatest about it, you always feel how much thought and work was put into every big update and there's never even a trace of rushed development to be seen. I wish the same would have happened with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet because the Storyline and overall concepts show that it could've been the best game this series ever had but due to the rushed development it was a laggy and buggy mess.
0:14 Vampire Survivors was inspired by Magic Survival.
Just think, this game will only get better. The current 48 (as of version 0.6) roster will only grow as he adds more and more of the Japanese and English generations. Version 0.6 was released on Steam with the biggest addition being all 3 current Indonesian generations added and the HoloHouse (farming, fishing, and decorating).
Not only that. Kayu (the man who created this game) will add more characters based on number of Hololive members plus more items and collab, the update will take a bit longer to do than other games (because they can do working on the game on free time) currently Hololive members have 83 active Talents (and they can grow more) so 38 is basically part of that. So yes, Holocure will get larger as long as Hololive getting bigger.
One criticism I have is there there are quite a few crit characters, like with the amount of characters there's quite a few archetypes that are pretty filled with characters, and others that aren't. That being said, that's a good thing, more rather than less

1:45 A vtuber can be anything you mentioned. You just do not use a cam but an avatar... you can even use an image and become a PNG tuber.
The game itself is in my eyes at least a testimony on how good a game can be if there is no greed involved.

The variety of character pool makes this game stand out among the mob survival games. In most VS clones, you really only play about 5-10 characters and you've seen it all, but over here, absolutely everyone is different. Now, there are characters that are similar, of course, but even those they tried enough to differentiate in my opinion.

Vampire Survivors is still the best one in the last couple years. It is the one I play the most. Lot of map variety, a true endless mode, and you can grind to get really powerful.
But I do agree that Holocure is the best of the genre besides Vampire Survivors. The one thing it does a lot better than Vampire Survivors is character balancing. After a point, in Vampire Survivors you only really need to play one of a few characters (usually Trouser or Sigma). Once you have unlocked everything, there is quite literally no reason to even touch like 90% of the characters anymore, because you won't get a meaningfully different experience. You may as well just keep using the character that you have already been putting the golden eggs into.
In Holocure though, even once you gachikoi everyone, the nature of the game is that all 38 characters feel different to play, so you just pick and choose who to play as, depending on your mood. Sometimes when I open the game I will just use an rng set between 1-38, and play whichever it lands on.

There actually used to be a random select on the character screen in 0.5 but it was removed in 0.6 for some reason. Kay has said it will come back in the next update though.

The biggest appeal for VTubing, at least from what I can gather, is for the streamer themselves. Being able to put themselves out there and engaging with their audience while at the same time remaining anonymous. Its the same logic behind screen names and mascot/avatars/personas that content creators have used to represent themselves on the internet since back in the Newgrounds days. They are able to show their real personalities while wearing a false face, in a way, its the exact opposite of the modern social media influencer (who shows their real face, but often has a fake and manufactured personality). The Keyfabe and coming up with lore for what is essentially your own original character also just seems like fun.
In my opinion, one of the defining characteristics of "what is a Vtuber?", involves using some kind of motion-capture to animate an avatar in real-time. Beyond that, it's really up to you.
I've seen Vtubers that where animated versions of themselves. I've seen Vtubers that rigged a real-person's face to their model (avatar) as a joke, and into the strange.
There are also different levels of how far into the tech you want to get. Using special software and a webcam can work, or you can invest in fancier, more accurate tracking-systems.

Vampire survivor is not the original. The sprites and arts are from Castlevania and the gameplay is from magic survival.
Vtuber is basically someone who streams with a animated model. That's it.
Every skill every item in this game have their own history that you still can trace it on youtube

Actually yeah theres ALOT of references.
Some of them are as simple and wouldn’t require ever watching these vtubers, Such as Kiaras “trail of Fire” (because shes a pheonix), Guras “Shark Bite” (because shes a shark) or Calliopes “Death” (because shes a shinagami)
Others like Mikos “baby talk” (because of her mannerism of Speaking), Oilles “world’s biggest fan” (due to her being a HUGE hololive fan seeing alot of members who joined before her in very high regard.), or Korones “Endurance” (due to her often streaming for 10 hours without issue.) aren’t super hard to get but you do need to have knowledge of the characters.
Than theres some stuff like the a few of the items like “X-Potato”, “Thank you forever” (both infamous Korone moments), Knight Milk (due to Noel having very large breasts which people joke about), or all the various types of Asacoco (basically live inject version of Kiryu Coco streams so people don’t miss them) require actually watching Hololive. Its quite neat

We all need to be slowly educated in the teachings of the vtuber. Being an all knower of the trend doesn't happen overnight but the further you decend in the hole the more knowledge is gained and soon you'll realize there's no going back but take heart Mug that vtubers are love, they are life. The community might be saturated with them but that only means they are our masters and they rule the internet.
IMO this is the game of the year because it is free and amazing. Other games also stand out like Bg3 or Armored Core but they aren't free and have a ton of content like this one.
I play HoloCure because I enjoy it, but started because I'm a fan of Hololive EN. The English branch is definitely the most widespread with having members across the world. They also have a division in Indonesia with their own mascot talent which is Kobo. She makes any stream better with her personality and the character she plays. I would say the face of EN is Gawr Gura and I'm not sure about JP. But anyways, I recommend you start down this rabbit hole, that is if you can deal with the consequences of having oshis whose merch you feel compelled to buy.
JP's mascot can be variably seen as Sora (since she was the first and for over a year only member), Fubuki for her status as Meme Queen, or Miko since she has some form of actual ambassador status.

The fact that this game is free is crazy
Its best game of the year and the genre by far. FFS , most of its "negative" reviews are trolls or people complaining that its not monetized
Regarding vtuber questions: Vtuber = virtual youtuber (though you can do it on any streaming platform), which basically just means that instead of appearing IRL, you have a virtual avatar. Many people say that one of the first ones was Annoying Orange.
Also, Hololive has Japanese, English and Indonesian branches, so it's not just Japanese, though the trend started in Japan and they do tend to cater to a japano-phile crowd.
And yes, the game is almost entirely references. Psycho Axe for instance is a reference to Suisei when she did a collab (collaboration stream) with a few others and just went axe murdering psycho on them. If you search "Suicopath clip" you probably find a few fun clips, some may even be animated with subtitles etc.
Also, Vtuber fanbases are filled with socially maladjusted loners who rage horribly if you insult their oshi (oshi = something between favorite and object of worship). Most aren't like that ofc, but in general it's smart to keep critiques etc to vague generalities etc.

it's funny there are some people who won't play Holocure because it's a Vtuber game, and they think you have to spend hours of time watching Vtuber to be able to play this game. No, you can play this blind without any knowledge of the source material, they are just a bonus if you want to know some of them.
Yes you can be a Virtual youtuber (vtuber) by being yourself, you need an avatar/vtuber model or just a jpeg but doesn't need a background story or character trait or anything but basically you like the chara design so you choose it to be your avatar thats all
The dev made the game as a fan... for fans. Thus the numerous references. I also think the dev is wise enough not to try converting non-fans. And non-fans being completely clueless or confused about the references is funny.
aas for the question, in the case of hololive, they provide you a character, with a potential for a bit of input from you. and beyond that its like wrestling, you and your fans both know its fake and a bit. so it becomes a mixture of you and your personality.

1:40 sure, you can be anything. There are very few non-written rules and no written rules about how to be a vtuber, pretty much.
Eve though I like Hololive, I don't really like Holocure that much. The one good thing it has going is it is relatively challenging for a Bullet Heaven. That said I much prefer Halls of Torment (the Diablo-like) and Rogue Genesia (has FTL-style campaigns as well as survival mode).
There's a fine line between making yourself a Vtuber and simply using an avatar to stream. People like Pokemaine who tried to jump onto the Vtuber bandwagon didn't seem to think that simply using an avatar was sufficient, while someone like Kson understands that there's the element of roleplaying involved to warrant the Vtuber label.

I hate vampire survivors but I love this game, and no, it's not the vtubers, because I don't watch any of them. I just think is game is very well made.
The game isn't even out yet, its still in version 0.6. Guy likes to drop a massive patch every 4 or 5 months with a butt-load of new content every time, so don't forget to return to HoloCure in a few months from now.
Idol Showdown is a helluva lot better
