- The wars of the Roses and the struggle for the English throne.
Treachery, betrayal and murder were all common themes of the English Wars of the Roses (or War of the Roses). Fought behind the Royal Plantagenet house's of York and Lancaster, the Wars of the Roses resulted in 30 years of bloodshed with the English crown changing hands no fewer than 6 times. If you think that Game of Thrones is brutal then think again. The wars of the Roses were the real deal. From the incompetent King Henry VI to the treacherous King Richard III, this is the story of the struggle to control the throne of England and the ultimate rise of the Tudor's.

So much of this inspired Game of Thrones.
Actually George drew inspiration from many different events, including the War of the Roses, the 100 years war and Scottish history.
Agreed. GoT is a masterpiece but not directly inspired by WotR.
Loved it and I learnt so much
Thanks so much, i'm really glad you enjoyed it! 😀
That was amazing! Thank you for the video.
Keep it up! Looking forward for more videos from you, don't stop!
Thanks very much!
Henry Tudor arrived in West Wales, near Dale, Pembrokeshire before Bosworth, not in England.
Yes thanks for the correction Jill!
Philippa Gregory has written several novels of this turbulent period. They are POV style novels like A Song of Ice and Fire. They made me interested in British history of this period.
I'm currently reading White Princess. It's in Elizabeth's POV is her other novels has a dual POV?

Hey that music in the background is pretty kickass
Very good explanation but a bit too fast for so much information, will have to rewind and repeat a few times to get the gist of it all. But a very good video. Thank you.
Play it at .75 % speed
I honestly cannot count the times I've repeated this video just to get the right sequence of succession and events.
Grow brain cell nutrition
Great video! A succinct and easy to understand look at a confusing time.
Doberman Girl Thank you very much!
Edward III had all of those children who in turn had many children, etc. If only Richard II had made a couple of kids...
Very good summary presentation for the uninitiated. Thank you.
litwriter100 Really glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting!
GBH, you're welcome. By the way ,assuming you are the narrator of the video, in one way you remind me of myself. Despite your obvious erudition, you have never been able to shake your Cockney accent. The same is true for me. I can converse intelligently on a wide range of subjects ranging from history, literature, philosophy, science, etc., yet I have never been able to shake my thick as fleas Philadelphia accent. I sound like I’m right off the streets, which is true. Thanks again.
litwriter100 I know what you mean, although I'm a Yorkshire lad! Sometimes my accent is a bit thick but at other times it's hardly noticeable. They say we speak the queens English in York, although people from other areas of Yorkshire have really strong accents! Thanks again for tuning in.
Nice video love it
Thank you!
Great overview - just about to revisit the wars with a student this evening. Roll on the bloodshed…
Thank you and good luck!
@@Xploreheritage most appreciated - will be sharing the vid with them after - for a little test next lesson ;)
Good video,What happened to the battle of losecote/hornfield in 1470? Edward had a large group of Burgundy flemish hand-gunners with him
And let's not forget one of the great legacies that this period bequeathed to posterity -- that deathless quatrain:
"Cecil B. DeMille
Much against his will
Was persuaded to leave Moses
Out of the War of the Roses"
Awesome info! Keep it up! New subscriber here! 👍
Thanks so much 🙏
Good overview of the most important conflicts of the period! Small corrections, Beaufort is pronounced "Boe-foot" or "-fort" with a very soft "r" and Valois is pronounced "Val-wah." Keep up the good work+ videos like these inspire people to investigate further into history.
Many thanks for your kind words. I do have a habit of mispronouncing things! I'm currently working on a script for Richard III and the Princes in the tower so stay tuned!
I love history!
God all they did was kill each other! I would stear away from Tyne throne
great british history, you should point out that edward the 4th was not richard of york's son. richard was away on a crusade when edward was conceived. so richard's (the 3rd) claim that edward was illegitimate was correct. richard was the rightful king.
I found it easier to watch on .75 speed, good video though.
Game Of Thrones brought me here
Some inaccuracies but the largest is in the title. The war of the roses has nothing on the death toll of The English Civil War which is the bloodiest war ever to happen in the British isles. It killed a large proportion of the English adult population with hundreds of thousand dying as a result.
The music is too loud for the narration.
Où voir le film ?
the music is too loud..it covers the voice of the narrator..
Some say this is too fast but I like the pace of it. It's always possible to pause or rewind if necessary. I hate waffle and there's no waffle in this. Katherine of Valois is pronounced Val wa by the way.
Very good summary and well thought out, but as Elfie says, too fast. The hurried delivery of so much information spoils it, which is a shame given the excellent choice of music, paintings and background illustrations. It all deserves a slower-paced delivery. Have you got the heart to re-do it? I know what this involves and thanks, despite the hopefully constructive critique.
So Richard II's rightful heir should have been the Earl of March (Lionel's grandson)? Richard II didn't have any children, so the Earl of March should have been the heir-presumptive.
Only if they counted direct descent through a female. The second son had only a girl, who then had a son, so if you discount the boy-break, the Earl of March would have been king......sadly, the boys-only-club loses interest after a female-only generation and the third son's son was directly in line. Suddenly, the female line is hunky-dory for Henry VII, as is illegitimacy...but only for him.
@@leanie9660 but it also bumped the York's since they married into it from being descended from the 4th son, the sons of Richard of Cambridge all had the BEST claim's to the throne...aside from right of conquest which beats all inheritance rights.
0:57 who's the actor or model?

Thank you for sharing, for me it is the most confusing part of English history. Like of course 😀
You're welcome 😊

so much killing..
coming here after ancestry results like O_O
What's the name of the show or movies you got,the pics from?? Is,it,the Tudors from HBO?
Hi. Most of the images used are from Shakespeare's 'The Hollow Crown' and also the TV series 'The White Queen'.
many are from "The WHite Queen" - many inaccuracies there as well, but good actors.
@@lizzymeister205 I actually liked that The White Queen simplified a lot of this big mess of history into the key players, which helped me understand it better overall, and then when I got that I was able to do proper research and not become insanely confused at everything and all the names etc. Of course the series is fictionalized, but it does help for people who want to start learning
good but too fast
"St. Crispin's Day
there common soldier are asome!
Was the final body count actually greater than the Civil Wars of the 1640s?
Paul Quinn Hi Paul. Not sure about the wars in general but the Battle of Towton was the bloodiest single day battle in terms of men lost.
Paul Quinn. No, if you look it up the death toll in the wars of the roses was not more than 50,000. The English Civil War death toll was about 500,000 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_by_death_toll
nowhere near it
I got to interview Thomas Penn about the war and his fantastic history book on this period The Brothers York. You can hear the interview here warscholar.org/?p=1836 and czcams.com/video/ELmc5zPcFgc/video.html
......I'm so confused.
Vladpryde. It was a confusing time. The crown switched back and forth between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists and the Earl of Warwick changed sides during that time. Also changing loyalties (more than once) was the Duke of Clarence (Edward IV's brother) and also Richard III (upon the death of his brother Edward IV)
Why does Henry VI look so dreamy in these pics instead of discombobulated like he actually was....
Thanks for a well-meaning video but delivered far too quickly. Sounded like the Ts & Cs on a radio ad.
Hi there, thanks for the feedback. There is obviously a lot of information to get in, but I get your point.
Was that Benedict Cumberbatch in the thumbnail?
Certainly was!
Marget ruled most of the time with her husband was in and out of bouts of insanity and also fled to france till she could get help and ended up killing her son in the process she could have just been happy but instead she lost her husband and son and died alone in france broke
They showed up the same time as Margert when she came back
GOT.
It's a good video and I commend you for the details, but you really need to work on those pronunciations. Being English yourself I must confess to being perplexed that you can't get Beaufort or Salisbury right.
😅
This guy talks way too fast!
Well keep up then
Valois is pronounced "Val-Wah" not "Val-oys". Just sayin.
This is my familys history
My grandma is from one side my grandpa is lancaster we still carry the Lancaster name
If they could have got along anf done well i would be a princess
Talks way to fast
Hey if your reading this, have a nice day
(Not really, I just want likes
sad you didnt get any
ah yes, the black washing of history continues..........
Nobody actually thinks the real Margaret Beaufort was black. Shes an actress playing a character. What's the big deal?
