    Brilliant thanks. A much overlooked resource. Blackmagic documentation is amazing. I have never known any other software developer release full documentation of new versions as quickly as Blackmagic do.

    Thanks for posting, very informative.
    Questions: does the paid version (studio) require a separate download, or after paying, do I still continue to use my davinci resolve dnld I currently have where it becomes unlocked to operate as the paid version?
    I'm curious what happens to all my old projects?
    Does the paid version look and function the same?

    The only reason why i'd upgrade is if it speeds up video editing. I only video edit games in 4k60 fps but it is slow when you do h.265 to video edit from my rtx4090 and when i use my 13th gen i9-13900k it is fast but it throttles like crazy. Does anyone know if getting studio speeds up video editing?

    It's a mystery how you have time to ferret out all this information and still keep up all your presets, updates, CZcams vids, 3rd-party commitments, and conferences. 🤔 And yet be beyond perky in front of the camera, as your sleep time must suffer. 🤣 We appreciate your productivity and how you make Resolve easier for us.

    Probably THE number 1 selling point for the Studio version is its ability to render HVEC/AVC without producing these nasty glitches/artefacts.
    I'm still on the free version - but apparently, studio's graphics card supported encoding option in conjunction with the frame look-ahead feature seems to do a great job at remedying that.
    Thus far, I'm exporting DNxHR (which produces a 256 GB file for a 20 minute 4k video) and then revert to Handbrake to convert to HVEC/AVC, pretty challenging work flow. 😅
    Funny how no one on CZcams seems to address this issue with the free version
    [EDIT]
    ...okay found out that I accidentially exported DNxHR 444 - so went a bit overboard for my specific usecase.
    But that about explains the file size 😅
    [/EDIT]

    I'd like to upgrade, but I'm very low on funds currently and my laptop is 7 years old. i7-6700HQ CPU, 16GB RAM and GeForce GTX 960M graphics, so not sure how much of a benefit I'd get from it.

    • @perlichtman1562
      @perlichtman1562 Před 9 měsíci

      I recently tried running Free and Studio on an i7-3820 vs. a 13600KF and 13900K with various video cards ranging from a 630 GT, 3060 12GB, Arc A770 16GB up to an RTX 4070, RX 7800 XT and 7900 XTX. The performance difference between Studio and Free is much bigger with more modern CPUs and GPUs and some of the GPUs play nicer on older systems than others.
      If it were me, because there’s less of a performance difference, unless Free can’t read the file formats you need or you really need some of the new features, I would stick with Free unless you upgrade your system. Upgrading to Studio won’t give you the performance boost you probably want on that system.
      As a reference point, a $500 GPU on my old i7-3820 got outperformed in DaVinci Resolve Studio by 13600KF with a $200 used GPU (RTX 3060 12GB) in my testing. The biggest problem is timeline playback - even a $999 MSRP GPU couldn’t fix that issue in my i7-3820.

    I would love a stand-alone version of Fairlight as well as the studio version. I'm doing a lot of audio only stuff and this would be great

    • @rano12321
      @rano12321 Před 11 měsíci +5

      For that I'd recommend using any other DAW. Fairlight is great and it used to cost a lot before when it was tied to a console but it was mostly geared towards film production than being a DAW for all audio related needs. If you are doing bulk of complex Audio work, I'd recommend Reaper. It's cheap (soft of free), runs on even a potato computer and easy to use. It's basically a pro tools that works.

    • @perlichtman1562
      @perlichtman1562 Před 9 měsíci

      @@rano12321I completely agree. Years ago I moved from previous experience in Logic, Cakewalk and Pro Tools to doing most of my work in Reaper and found that many of my film and game score composer friends had done the same (for example one that scored Mortal Kombat 11 did so in Reaper). It has my favorite routing system of any software I have worked with.
      But if you aren’t worried about doing more professional work, here are some of my favorite things about Reaper.
      1) No DRM/copy-protection issues: the free trial version is fully functional and if you ever lose your license file, all you have to deal with is a nag screen on start-up. It is just a basic name and serial number setup that doesn’t “phone home” so you’re still okay even if something ever happened to their servers.
      2) No bloatware - extremely small size and quick installs: unlike basically every other DAW I have worked with (and I reviewed software for two music tech magazines for years) Reaper has an extremely small file size and installs very quickly. In fact it even has a “portable install” option. When I am teaching students audio editing in person, I usually have it both downloaded and installed within minutes on both Macs and PCs (it probably supports other OSes but I haven’t used it with them).
      3) Incremental updates + 2 full version upgrades: Reaper emphasizes refining and adding features incrementally in frequent updates as opposed to infrequent massive overhauls. When you buy a license, it isn’t quite like Resolve where you get lifetime upgrades for free, but you get upgrades until two full versions for free. For example, I got a 4.x license and the first release was in 2011. 5.0 releases started in 2015 and I got all of those for free. The first update where I needed a new license was 6.0 in 2019. So 8 years for the price of $60 (for personal or small business use) or $225 for a commercial license (the features are the same but the licenses are based on an honor system).
      4) Amazing legacy and recovery support: so far, I have yet to encounter a single old Reaper project where I couldn’t open it in a newer version - which is the exact opposite of Pro Tools where I have had to spend days to be able to open sufficiently old ones, including getting an old system working
      Anyway, long story short: Fairlight works great in Resolve but I totally agree that outside that Reaper is a much better choice.

    I've used Studio for over 2 years because It says it is capable of producing Dolby Atmos Edits. OK Where can one find anything Dolby Atmos. 99.9% of DR users don't even do or know anything about 5.1 surround Sound. I'll wager the best 99% of people use a simple Sterio computer system speakers or Stereo head phones.
